What are ZEBRA DOMES? Please describe them to me!

They are a mousse type of dessert with chocolate stripes on them (making them look kinda of like a zebra) About an 1 1/2-2" round and about 1" high shaped like a dome.

They are absolutly great (everyone in our family loves them except DD (16) but that just leaves more for us)

Yup, zebra domes are on the buffet at Boma, but also can be found in Mara at AKL. If you want to see what they look like, check out www.allearsnet.com and click on the "dining" link. There is a photo there for you to get an idea. I have eaten these at Boma, and really, really love Boma, but think those little domes are a little over-hyped here on the DIS. I am fully aware I am in the minority on this issue! BTW, on the same page, on allears, where the zebra domes are pictured, if you follow the page all the way down and look on the far left there is a link to WDW recipes. The recipe for zebra domes can be found here, so you can see the ingredients, and even try to make them at home!

As described they are small and dome-shaped with chocolate stripes. The base is a small piece of chocolate "cake" and inside there is a chocolate/coffee mousse. It is all topped with a chocolate "frosting layer" (I don't recall it but there is an actual culinary term for the topping...but it tastes like frosting).
There are pretty awesome.

ganache - chocolate and cream.

Sponge cake disc on the bottom (I don't remember it being chocolate. Hard ganache (more chocolate than cream) dome. Filled with chocolate kahlua mousse.

I was disappointed as well. They sound really good, but the night I was there they were not "well executed." They seemed a little stale, the spongecake was too dry, the mousse too geletin-y - you know how mousse gets after a few hours?

crisi, you are correct...my memory has been jogged...it is not chocolate cake, but sponge cake....
Ganache...thats the word...I'm such a guy.

I think I am one of the few who do not like Zebra Domes and I love chocolate and coffee. Oh well, that leaves more for all of your Zebra Domes lovers when we are at AKL in Jan. :cool1:

They were good - but I'd have to agree with the "overhyped" description. I wouldn't make a trip to Boma just for them. But we did find them at Mara (not every time though - so they don't ALWAYS have them) It was under $4 for 3 Zebra Domes and 2 chocolate mousse things.

Words can not do justice to the delectible taste of zebra domes! :wizard:

Thanks for all the responses! And thanks to the allears link, blanq . . .the pictures of them look great!

Are there any other notable desserts at AKL?

Yeah, it's so late. . .HOLIDAY BAKING!! Gotta get some sleep now!

:wave2:

I love Boma, but can't stand Zebra Domes. I really dislike coffee, and the Zebra Domes have a very strong coffee flavor. Until I came across this thread, I thought I was the only person who doesn't like them. Up until now, I've only heard people raving about them. All the other desserts I had at Boma were great - cheesecakes, pastries, chocolate mousse...

Yum! I don't like coffee at all, but I love the zebra domes. We ate them at Boma.

We really didn't like Boma. I am an adventurous eater so I was surprized. It was not that the food was bad. I just did not care for the spices or the smell of the spices. The desserts on the other hand were fabulous. Zebra domes were excellent. Many peopke love boma so give it a try.

I agree, I greatly dislike the taste of coffee and had I realized that coffee was apart of the dessert I would have never tried it. However, when I did we loved them! We purchased them at Mara's.

Great to see you again, Loretta!! I will give a trip report, along with balcony pics, room pics, room survey (for Majestic/Fred's project), etc! We really are very excited :jumping1:  ! It's been a dream of mine to stay there since the first time I visited WL--January 1998. If it's okay, I may PM you about your WL room ;)!

Thanks for the well-wishes!
