I, too, am a dog lover. I am, however, dogless at this time. Still trying to recover from the loss of my beloved Bubba dog. Now, then, I do understand wanting to have your "child' close at hand, but I also understand the need of not being kept awake by barking dogs, keeping the rooms as hypo-allergenic as possible, and no 'presents' left at anyone's door.
I wouldn't bring my dog with me. While I think he may have been well behaved, I know that others wouldn't think so. In addition, the dog (or cat) is in a strange, unfamiliar location, being left there, all alone (regardless of the length of time), a formerly well behaved animal, can and probably will do something unexpected, especially if some needs to enter the unit without you there (read emergency).
I always felt bad leaving our dog at home while we vacationed. We were lucky though, our son would stay at our home to care for the dog. If he wasn't available, he had a friend, that our dog knew, who would stay. It was a comfort knowing that he was in his familiar environment, being taken care of by someone who cared about him, instead of being left in some strange hotel-room like place, with us gone all day.
Building a pet-friendly resort would be a better option. That way if you were there you would expect barking, running, 'presents,' etc. And also expect the additional maintenance fees associated with running a resort that is pet-friendly.
