What are your Photography Plans for 2010??? (Update Us, Please!!!)

Some of my goals for 2010 include not being lazy and plan to fix problems in post processing. I take a lot of school team portraits and I find myself falling back on the traditional poses whereas when I started, I was creative and tried new things and got good feedback from the parents. It's time to find that excitement again.

I would also like to use lighting more confidently. I use my flash a lot and usually have good results, but I'm not always sure why it happened. LOL

For studio work, I plan to repeat my now regular routine of having a spring shoot, a Halloween shoot, and a late fall shoot. I'm going to learn how to use my CyberCommander to control my lights this time. I'm also going to do more with props.

In addition to my regular spring studio shoot, I'm going to try to organize a Friday outing to an arboretum with a bunch of pre-schoolers to practice my non-studio portrait shoots. I'm going to get a speedlight softbox (probably an Ezybox) to give me a little lighting control.

I'd also like to take a lighting class this year. My ability to learn on my own and from reading isn't progressing as well as I'd like. I think taking a class will help.

On the subject of classes, I'm finally going to get around to teaching a few neighborhood photography classes. I've been asked by several people but never have gotten around to it.

I plan to buy a new printer this year and start working on my printing. Actually, I have a friend that just bought a new printer. I might play with his a bit first to see whether I think I'll really use it. As far as I can tell, you have to either commit to printing a fair amount or not print at all as bad things happen to idle printers. I think printing is an interesting part of the art of photography, but thus far, I haven't done too much of it.

I'd say that I'm going to revamp my Smugmug site, but I always say that and rarely do.

I plan on buying some interesting lenses this year that should provide a good opportunity to learn. The most exciting is a Tilt/Shift lens. I'm also thinking about getting a fisheye.

I'd also like to concentrate on improving my video work. I'm going to try to integrate at least some video and audio into all of my slideshows from now on. I also plan on going to a three camera setup for our next school play video. This time, I'm going to concentrate more on focus accuracy and do more closeups.

I'm also going to do a weekend of video interviews with kids. I haven't decided the particulars (use a set or go on location, all video on the kid or split between kid and interviewer, etc), but I know I want to do it. I think that having a nice interview with my kids talking about their hopes and dreams, the fears, their friends, and whatever else is important to them will be extremely valuable to me some day. Once I ramp up the production with my own kids, I'll run a bunch of the neighbor kids through the mill.

I have a few other projects I want to undertake this year:

1) A home/life tour. I want to produce a mini-documentary on our current lives, with a lot of video and pictures of our house, the school, my office, the neighborhood and neighbors, etc. I want something that my kids and their kids can look at many years from now to see what our lives were like back in 2010. It would also be fun to send to relatives that never visit (which seems odd because Houston is such a big vacation destination).

2) Pacific Coast picture. We'll be in Pacific Grove again for spring break. I love shooting their. The challenge is doing something different from my usual shots. I think that the T/S will help. I also plan to do more shots with off-shoe flash using gels and/or softbox. In the past, I've tended to do landscape shots and people shots. This time, I want to do more people on location shots.

3) Canoe trip. I want to take a multi-night family canoe trip at the start of this summer. I'd like get creative in telling the story of that trip with still shots, video snippets, and audio.

I've got other plans, but that's more than enough to write about now. As always, reality will fall short of my plans, but it's fun trying to do as much as possible.

I definitely don't want to get into a 365 or 52 program. My shooting tends to be spotty. I'll take thousands of shots in a couple of weeks and then not touch my camera for several weeks. I'm happy with that. I don't want photography to become a chore.

I am thinking starting/ participating in a 26 Things challenge.. How it works:

A list of 26 words is posted for a two month period. You then take photos of how you interpret the words/phrases. There is no right or wrong way; this is a way to help you think outside the box and stretch your vision.

Once you've taken the shot, post it the thread with the title of what you interpreting.

Anyone else interested? If you are I could post the list I have been given for January and February.

My plan is that by this time next year when the "Post Your Best of 2010" thread pops up, I'll actually have 12 pictures to post.

One thing that should help with that is learning to find the interesting things that are close by me to photograph. I seem to keep thinking that I need to get away on a photography excursion to find anything good to shoot.

^^Same here. One project I've wanted to do for a while now is a photowalk in the downtown area of my hometown with just my 24-70 one day and possibly my 70-200 during another day (hopefully during two completely different seasons).

Another really big area I need lots and lots of practice with is lighting techniques. I'm getting a continuous output fluorescent light kit for my b-day in a couple of weeks. I plan to practice my portrait and product photography with it. I also plan to learn how to use my speedlight flash properly.

Other than the lighting kit, I don't have any definite gear purchases lined up. 2009 was a pretty big spend year for gear so I'm going to let the engines cool for as long as my CAS holds out :scared:.

Other than that, just shoot as much as I can and continue down the learning path!

My photography plans for 2010 include lots of practice. I want to take more photo excursions close to home .. Harrisburg, York, Lancaster Amish country and Gettysburg .... all these places for me can be done on a whim on a Saturday or Sunday. On a little longer scale I'd like to throw in overnight trips to Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Washington DC.

I also purchased a book/dvd combo from Amazon titled Adobe Lightroom Classroom in a Book. Its a book with tutorials on dvd to follow the lessons in the book. What I have done with it so far has been helpful so I am looking forward to getting more in depth with it and learning the nuts and bolts of the program rather than just doing it hit or miss.

I have no plans to visit Disney this year but that could change at any given time. I have two time share weeks to use and if someone said .... lets go ......I'd be up for it.

Let's go!! :thumbsup2

My plans...

-Hopefully, be in school for photography, living in Boston, having the time of my life.
With that plan comes with the obvious of my skillz improving since I'll be taking classes only in photography and not whatever else I'm supposedly learning in high school.
-Maybe, I'll have the 50D or even the 7D if I can swing it.
-I'll have either a fisheye or a wide angle (most likely the wide angle) and the Nifty Fifty (actually that could happen in like a week with my Christmas money).
-Actually finish a 365. I got like 50 days into this year then...:confused3 Maybe a 52 week would be better...? Or anything thing like 30 Secrets in 30 Days, that was fun to do, and not as hard as 365.
-Find an internship in Boston like the amazing one I have now, maybe one that allows me to shoot concerts and bands.

I knew you wouldnt miss that one Ann ... come up with a week that works and I can check availability ;)

Don't tempt me, Karyl. After our trip this year got cut short and I know that DH has no plans to go back for probably another 5 years---you might sign on to find a list of suggested dates in your Inbox. :lmao:

<----- checks inbox daily :rotfl2:

Seriously though ... another trip to World will only be feasible for me if business picks up after the first of the year.:wizard: But its not impossible. And to keep this on topic ......Wouldn't that be an awesome opportunity to learn ... bouncing photo ideas around with another photo/Disney enthusiast in the most photographed place on earth? A most excellent Photo Plan for 2010 if you ask me.

I'm planning on learning a lot more about my new T1i and continuing to improve my photography.

My grandpa gave me an old camera (an argoflex from the early 1940's) which is currently decorating the bookshelf in my study. I think it would work after some cleaning - I'd like to see about getting that in good working order.

As for photo trips I have a couple of trips scheduled to Gettysburg where I'll be concentrating on battlefield landscape photography - in the past I've always focused (pun intended) on the monuments so landscape is a stretch for me. The Gettysburg foundation is offering a sunset photo safari in July and a sunrise photo safari sometime after that as group outings with a professional photographer. If I pick up a few tips I'll be happy. It's Gettysburg - as a civil war nut and sometimes living historian/reenactor, I love Gettysburg (maybe even more than Disney)!

2. Thanks to Jeff (Groucho), I'm also currently on a 12-step program for vignetteaholics.
:lmao: Don't stop on my account! If you like 'em, use 'em. It's a free country. I'm not a big vignetting fan but I'm just one lousy opinionated guy. :teeth:

Re: the 365/52 projects... my wife decided to try to post a photo of the kid(s) every day on her blog, starting the middle of this year... she even was going to mainly use her K100D rather than her Fuji PnS. I knew she was in trouble when she started posting 3-5 photos every day! It took no time at all before she was missing days, then weeks... now it's been around 4 months with no updates at all! It's very easy to burn yourself out on that kind of thing if you're not really determined to stick with it.

My photo plans for 2010... I kind of feel like I have to get my mojo back! I've got the best equipment I've ever had but I don't feel like I've had the right feelings of creativity. I'm not sure what it is... I think it's probably just the general business of two kids in the house. Every weeknight and every weekend feels like it's nonstop work keeping the kids happy and the 7-month-old out of trouble. The few times that I'm not taking care of them, I'm usually too exhausted to go out and take photos! It doesn't help that it's cold so we rarely venture outside - I get pretty bored taking photos in our living room over and over.

I am more interested in getting some good shots this upcoming trip than I was last trip, so hopefully I'll get back into the groove then. I do plan on doing a "crash course" of re-reading The Photographer's Eye and some other photo books just before leaving, too, and probably looking over some other people's Disney photos for inspiration/challenge.

After that, I would like to get a chance to get some more interesting photos around town... I've got the OK from my wife to go out some times to do this, but then I feel guilty leaving her alone with the kids (even though I am in that position a lot)!

Gettysburg is an awesome place to shoot ... battlefield landscapes are a challenge for sure but there is no shortage of subjects there. I live less than 30 miles from the battlefield so its an easy drive for me. One of my goals is to make it there more often to take pictures in the upcoming year. Here is one of the landscapes I took there this past February

Great idea for a thread!

As with all years, this one will be busy.

Skills
  • I need to get a better handle on low (or lower) light photography. I'm just plain no good at it.
  • I would enjoy taking a Portrait and/or PP class at NESOP

Geer
  • I'd like a full frame camera--but then I'd like to buy into DVC. One of these will win out in 2010 and it's too soon to tell which

Subjects
  • 15 days in Italy this June -- I'm "focused" on planning for that

I wish I had the chance to focus on a planning for a trip like that. Have fun doing that!!!

Oh, I just thought of something else that I would like to work on in 2010 - my timing. I seem to have the worst luck when it comes to timing shots.
For instance, tonight I was in my office, when I hear the sound of fireworks outside. I look out my back window, and sure enough there are some really nice fireworks going off close enough to get some good pictures. So I set up my camera on the tripod, adjust all the settings and get ready to take my first picture - just as last of the fireworks goes off.
I can't count how many times in the past few months that I have just missed getting a good shot of something.
So, I don't really know how yet, but somehow I plan on improving my timing this year.

Happy New Year EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!

I hope you all stick to your plans.... even if just a little.

I'm gonna bookmark this thread; and try to remember to BUMP it later in the year, to see how everyone made out. :thumbsup2

I have lots to work on, but I think I'll start with burn and dodge when I get back home from Christmas vacation.

I plan on taking a class so I can learn to use PS elements. I bought it about a year ago but have not taken the time to learn it on my own. I think the class starts in February.

I also need to take more local photography trips. We have a revolutionary war site in our county, but I have yet to go to any of the events they have there.

I just need to practice more.
