My crew are taking a mini vacation over on the coast of Maine (left last night) and it just dawned on me a little while ago that this is the first time ever - in my entire life - that I haven't spent Memorial Day weekend with some type of family.. Feels a little "odd" - to say the least..

When I was a kid, we always had my Grandma's picnic at Thatcher Park in NY.. As an adult, Memorial Day weekend was either spent here (when I was married to my 1st husband) or in Maine with the kids and my late DH.. From 1985 until 1999, every Memorial Day weekend was spent in Maine with my DH and my youngest DD; several times with DH's oldest DD and her DH; 3 yrs. in a row with my DSIL and her DH; then DD and her DH; and the last time we went, my DGD was along too..:)

I don't have any "real" plans for the weekend, but I'm back to reading again (far too warm this week to be working on my quilts); hope to try out a few new recipes; might go over to town and check out the used book store; and of course there's always a campfire I can stroll over to if the mood strikes me..:goodvibes

I saw on the news that there's been quite a jump in people going away for the MD weekend this year - as opposed to last year - and the largest percentage are going by car.. They seem to feel that this is a good sign in terms of financial recovery, but I'm not so sure about that..

Anyhow - what all are you planning to do? Going somewhere? Having a barbecue? Attending parades?

Feel free to share if you would like to..:goodvibes

Went out with hubby tonight for our 17th wedding Anniversary. Taking the kids to the circus tomorrow and Monday I am matching in the parade with my girl scout troops. Planning on visiting my grandfathers grave also. He was a WWII vet.

Congrats on the anniversary! :thumbsup2

Sounds like you have a pretty full weekend ahead of you.. Hope the weather is nice in your area..:goodvibes

Tomorrow we're helping someone from our church move.

Sunday, DH and I are going on a Chicago dinner cruise on Lake Michigan and staying overnight at the Doubletree! We're celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary. DS16 is babysitting DD10 (for pay, because we need him to take it seriously, which he is) overnight.

We got married over Memorial Day and thought we'd always have a 3-day weekend in which to celebrate, and this is the first time we're doing something overnight!

When I was growing up, I had a parade in our hometown which seemed like miles and miles. First with the Girl Scouts, then with our Middle School and then High School marching bands. Then in the afternoon, there was a huge bike race. Afterwards, we'd have a big get-together at my aunt's house -- it was so predictable -- everyone brought the same stuff each time, and we'd play in my cousin's tree house. If it had been a warm spring, they'd have the pool open. Just a really great family time. With my kids growing up without family around, I feel so sorry that they're missing that kind of relationship with their relatives.

We leave for Las Vegas in the morning.

I am MEANT to be packing, but I just can't decide what I want to wear this weekend.

We're doing a 5k autism walk tomorrow, then Water Country USA with my folks and nieces/nephews on Sunday.

I'm volunteering with Houndhaven on Saturday. Sunday, I plan on mowing the yard, unless it rains. Monday, I'd like to work on my book.

Sat. - going to a graduation party for ds 22 friend and then picking up ds18 at the airport. He returns from a week long senior class trip to disney

Sunday - church and ?

Monday - ? I would like to have a cook out sometime. I havent really thought everything through yet.

C.Ann - I love your quote about the scars...hmm last year with my 7 operations I sure have a whole bunch of scars!!

We are in NY with DS's soccer team for a tournament. We also have a 'spare kid' for the weekend, as his parents could not make the logistics work, and my DH could not come, so we have some room. We're in the hotel as we speak, watching the Celtics, and winding down from the evening festivities.

First and foremost...remember the people that gave us the freedoms we love. Contrary to what they think none of them were handed down from on high by the glorified used car salesmen in Washington. They were earned on blood covered fields around the globe.

Other than that I have 5 mile races on Saturday and Monday mornings and the rest of the time I will be getting my yard summer-ready. I have been busy this spring and the guy who lived here before me was way too into landscaping which means I also have to be way to into landscaping.

Wedding planning and shopping. Tomorrow I have an appointment with a consultant and I cannot wait! I don't think we're going to buy just yet, but I want to narrow my choices down since I'm pretty open to most styles.
On sunday DF and I are sitting in a pre-marital class in which we'll be starting next month. (you can start whenever). Its something we have to do if we want our pastor to marry us.
Monday I have to head back, as I start summer classes. :( DF is working.

.

It's not likely that I would forget.. My late DH was a veteran of the Korean War - a proud, tough-as-nails Marine until the day he took his last breath.. It's nice to see that so many towns - even the tiny ones up here in the mountains - make sure every military grave is decorated with a flag and there are parades in honor of them..

And of course we should also be mindful of those who are still serving now - and putting their lives on the line every second of every day..

Thank you for making this statement. It needed to be said.
