I gave up on The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo. I found that the author wrote like Anne Rice (very wordy) and I just wasn't getting into the storyline because of his wordiness. If someone wants to PM me the ending, please do. The story was interesting, and I have my guesses about the ending, I just wasn't going back to pick up the book the way that I normally do.

I started The Help last night. This book is definitely holding my interest! We decided after reading Mudbound for December's book club meeting that we'd read The Help for January. Two wonderfully written books on just horrible and shocking, to this reader, circumstances created by bigotry.

Glad I did not get The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo then. I read one of Anne Rice's books a few years ago & didn't enjoy it at all. :guilty:

Loved Mudbound & asked for The Help for Christmas. Hope it's under the tree!!!

Just finished Between Sisters by Kristen Hannah. Good fluff book....enjoyable to read. Now on to Conviction by Richard North Patterson.

Would you recommend Between Sisters for our book club in February? One of the members wants a fluff book that has nothing sad in it. We've read some really thought-provoking things over the past 6 months, including holocaust subject matter and she isn't into that stuff. She asked for something fluffy or funny for February.

Right now I'm on the "The Journey From Platform Nine and Three-Quarters" chapter of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone".

I know...why haven't I read the whole series yet? Well it was my brothers thing and he doesn't read much ..so I thought I should wait awhile.;)

It's definitely fluff. There is some sad stuff in it, but all in all it's not a sad book once you've finished. It does have a Reader's Club Guide at the end of the book with questions. I enjoyed Firefly Lane much more by her, but cried my eyes out!

I just finished "The Crimson Petal and the White." I really wanted to enjoy this book, but I really didn't. It was just "meh" for me.

I need to read "Into Thin Air" by Jon Krakauer for January's book club, but I need something really light after the last one, so I picked up "Too Many Crooks Spoil the Broth." So far, I'm really enjoying it! I love mysteries, and mysteries with recipes are even better!

Enjoy your holidays, everyone! I'm hoping for some books under the tree!!!

The Red Tent by Anita Diamant

A friend gave me this book because she loved it. I was skeptical because I rarely read fiction but she insisted I at least try it. I'm so glad she did; this book is captivating. In fact I'm going to bed early right now so I can read some more!

I am reading The Black Death, 1346-1353: A Complete History by Ole Benedictow.

As a Ph.D. student I get no break from the serious stuff :( lol

I had some issues with this book also, but I did stick with it. It didn't really remind me of Anne Rice; however, the book was translated from Swedish into English and I think it wasn't the best translation job. I had some problems with that. Also, the setting of the book was very "foreign" to me and I just couldn't envision it no matter how much the author tried. That's due to my own ignorance about that area of the world. So the whole time I was reading it I felt like the prose was a little "bumpy" due to translation and that I just couldn't get myself into the atmosphere of the book. I did get past it and ended up really enjoying the book.

FWIW, the translation on the second book "The Girl Who Played With Fire" is MUCH better.

That explains a lot. Maybe that's from where I got my Anne Rice analogy. I thought it was very wordy, but perhaps it was just the unsmooth translation.

Oh no! Don't tell me that. I just ordered book 2 from paperbackswap.com. I am liking this series better than Twilight. Much more mature...if you get my drift!.

Don't worry, I am still going to persevere, and I really liked books 1-4, but I just read books 5 and 6 in quick succession and maybe that was too much all at once.

My problem with Definitely Dead (book 6) had more to do with the unpolishedness of it than the demons appearing. There were tons of grammatical errors, and she used the phrase "definitely dead" about a million times.

I read a review where someone was complaining that she is introducing too many new characters and leaving out the old favorites. I agree fully with that, I mean, Bill hardly makes an entrance in book 6 and the new love interest, Quinn, is really flat as a character.

Anyway, that's just MHO. I tend to get tired of a particular style (in this case romantic fluff) after a few books and need a change. In a couple of weeks I'll read book 7 and hopefully her editor will have done a better job.

So I've had NEW MOON for nearly 3 weeks and I just can't finish it. :guilty::sad2: I'm going to move on to ECLIPSE and hope for better. I LOVED the movie, but the book....UGH!

I AM enjoying Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series though! :thumbsup2 I'm currently reading the third one and I have four waiting.

I am reading "The Complete Sherlock Holmes Volume 1" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I have been wanting to read these for awhile and with the movie coming out I figured I might as well.

I just finished the entire Troubleshooter series by Suzanne Brockmann:goodvibes:goodvibes What GREAT easy reading!!! Didn't realize what a wonderful author she is:yay::yay: Lots of twists and turns in her book.

Highly recommend!!

Have a Magical Disney Day!!

Just finished Under the Dome by Stephen King. It was a heavy book and dh kept laughing at me when I would try to get comfortable while reading it.

Hoping to pick up Sue Grafton's latest after Christmas. And I have the latest David Baldacci and the Michael Crichton in the circle of people with whom I switch off books.

Sooo... how was it? I'm about halfway through and I have to admit that I'm having a hard time sticking with it.

I read Under the Dome for a school paper and I loved it!! There were definitely some slow points and the ending horrified me but it was my first experience with Stephen King and I enjoyed it.

Just finished the second Nina Ware/Eddie Chase book by Andy McDermott. Unfortunately the series was released in England first, so the books from #3 on are hard to come by, I finally found a copy of #3 on Amazon, due to arrive tomorrow, but it cost me almost $12 for the paperback . It beats waiting till March for the US release though. Right now I'm on "the Angel" by Carla Neggers, still trying to decide if I like it or not. Just realized I have something like 25 books waiting for me on my Kindle, plus I'm planning to read the whole Irene Adler/Sherlock Holmes/Jack the Ripper series by Carol Nelson Douglas, non of which are available on Kindle as some are apparantly out of print.

Right now, I'm reading Mortal Error, a new theory (well, new to me) on the Kennedy assassination. Nothing like a little light holiday reading, eh?
