I am reading Prayers For Sale by Sandra Dallas. It is about two women in a western mining town during 1930's. One woman is old and she is telling the younger woman her own life experiences and others' stories who have come in and out of her life.

I read Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah last night. Ugh. I've decided the only book of hers I will like is Winter Garden. I've been battling breast cancer for 5 years and I really hate getting halfthway through a book to discover another female lead is going to die of the disease.

I have no idea what to read next.
Just remember, the female characters of often stereotyped in books. Firefly Lane was filled with a bunch of female stereotypes. You are the real deal... the survivor who can mock the characters in these books. Mock them by beating this disease once and for all. My prayers are with you.
For my next "adult book", haha, I think I want to start Ape House by Sara Gruen. Hopefully its as good as Water for Elephants but I have a feeling I might be disappointed

Ditto to what Clutter said. It is worth reading and I never realized how much bonobo apes are talked about in everyday life until I read Ape House. Anderson Cooper even mentioned them last week on some show he was on, but I can't remember which one.

I am reading The Irresistible Henry House and very much enjoying it! PP mentioned skype chatting with an author and it reminded me of a book our book club read over the summer. Alice I Have Been by Melanie Benjamin. She is a local author and was very willing to discuss her book with our club. It is a wonderful story of the young girl who was Lewis Carroll's inspiration for Alice in Wonderland.

I have had this book on my to-read list forever, I'm really looking forward to it! I've heard mixed reviews but mostly good ones :goodvibes I love when local authors really put themselves out there, Ridley Pearson lives about 10 minutes from me (he wrote the Kingdom Keepers books about WDW and writes crime novels) and he's super nice!

How cool! My DD who is 15 has read all of the Kingdom Keepers books and just loved them!

I think you will really enjoy Alice - I was actually sad when I finished it because I did not want it to end. She has a new book coming out this summer that is about Mrs. Tom Thumb. Sounds like a good summer read.

Oh good! I think that will be the next book I pick up then, you have me excited to read it! Mrs Tom Thumb sounds good too :) I felt that way about Water for Elephants when I read it last fall :goodvibes

I finished this last week. Through the beginning and middle parts I was quite intrigued. The last third was quite disappointing for me. I'm interested in knowing how you feel.

I've decided I need to make some kind of list to keep track of the books that other posters have suggested and sound good to me. Right now I have 6 library books on my Nook. Now to find time to read them before I have to send them back.

Right now I'm reading Private Life by Jane Smiley. Not as good as I hoped it would be.

Hi guys! I just found your thread tonight. I always read non fiction. Honestly, I haven't read a novel in about 10 years....but, I am tired of reality, lol. I deal with too much sad reality right now, so I really am looking for a good girly escape - but nothing that would shock the kids. :faint:

Can someone suggest an entertaining, light book?

Thanks!

Right now Dresden Files audiobooks (I confess, its mostly due to the reader being James Marsters aka Spike and John Hart).

Go to www.goodreads.com and setup a free account. There are three categories you can place books into... To read, Currently reading and Read. That's how I keep track of what I want to read. That way, I don't put too many into my library queue and get them all at the same time with no possible way of reading them all.

Now that's a very good idea! I've always got way more library books floating around than I can possibly read before they are due back. Some of them I can renew, but if there is a request for the title, I can't. Of course when that happens, I can't remember the name of the book to request it again. :headache:

Thanks so much for the info. Off to do it right away!

Hi, Jan. My suggestion (daunting as it sounds), is to go through this thread. I've gone through and written down every title that sounds good to me, or intriguing to me. Then, I look them up on Amazon and read the synopsis and reviews. That has helped me a lot.

Finished The Passage for the second time and now I'm reading The Truth About Cruise Ships - A Cruise Ship Officer Survives the Work, Adventure, Alcohol, and Sex of Ship Life.

I really enjoyed this book. It was recommended on this thread by someone (or the last book thread). It really grabbed me.

Another great book which is done in diary form is: These is my Words: The Diary of Sarah Agnes Prine, 1881-1901 . It's written by Nancy E. Turner.

It is a fiction book. I was a huge fan of Little House on the Prairie and both of these books just remind me of that time in history.

I completely agree. I stayed up last night to finish it and was disappointed with how it ended. I get so frustrated when an author starts out strong and then I think they get bored/lazy and finish their work in an unrealistic/not believable way. I did enjoy all the Disney and Beatles references though. I think I am going to start Let the Great World Spin tonight. I have read great reviews of it.

Oh god I love Goodreads! I'm on there constantly! Its by far the best way to organize your books.

I am currently reading the 3rd book in the Private series. Will probably start Alice I Have Been tonight :)

Working on Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. It's been on my "list" for quite a while, and I finally borrowed it from the elibrary and am reading it on my new (Christmas gift from dh) Kobo...

I'm loving the fact that in paper, it's a MASSIVE book, but on my Kobo, it's just Kobo-sized, lol....

My Kobo also came with 100 classics pre-loaded, so I will be working my way through them when I don't have anything else on the go....

Under The Dome by Stephen King

and

Deadly Sanctuary by Sylvia Nobel...it was a free Friday download on my Nook from Barnes and Noble. It's decent so far. It;s just a fluff mystery novel.
