For those that have read "The Help" is it sad?

Seems to get good reviews but I normally don't read sad books - mystery yes but sad - read for entertainment not to be depressed.

Thanks!

There are parts that make you think and make you sad for how it was but for the most part I found it to be uplifting. It is sort of a comeuppance story for a very deserving of it antagonist! I was so happy these women found their voice and the lead character learned how to follow her dream.

Oh and I just read a piece of fluff called A Taste of Magic. It was perfect for a rainy New Years day! Also it was free on Kindle. I also downloaded for free: Sweetie by Kathryn Magendie, The Year She Fell by Alicia Rasley and The People of the Mist by Henry Haggard. Any reviews on these? I am currently reading Cleopatra: A Life by Stacy Schiff.

I am reading Soul Identity. It was a free Nook book. It's different. I also read Syndrome (weird but ok book) and Code Blue-gets a little preachy but again, an ok book. They were free Nook/Kindle books.

I didn't find it sad. Eye opening, yes. I enjoyed it, but some have felt it didn't live up the hype.

What Glynis said. I read it before I knew there was any hype and absolutely loved it. I've recommended it to everyone I know.

Agreed. I also read it before the hype and loved it. Since the hype, I listened to it on CD and loved it even more. The readers were amazing. It was my first book on CD, and I haven't been able to like any other since it was so good.

I finished "Juliet" by Anne Fortier. Interesting and a good read. Then I read Michael Connelley's latest. Good as always. Now I'm reading the Dream Factory and enjoying it. Its fun.

I agree with Glynis & cheshireqt......I enjoyed the book & didn't find it sad. It made you think and also make you hope that acceptance of everyone has really changed for the better.

I just finished I Feel Bad About My Neck by Nora Ephron. I love her, she is so witty.

I am now reading Treasure Island. I can't believe I have never read it before. I should be finished with it today and I don't know what to pick next

I read Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah last night. Ugh. I've decided the only book of hers I will like is Winter Garden. I've been battling breast cancer for 5 years and I really hate getting halfthway through a book to discover another female lead is going to die of the disease.

I have no idea what to read next.

I very much liked Firefly Lane, but I can certainly understand how it would affect you much differently.

Strenth to you as you battle this disease. :)

Has anyone read How to Be An American Housewife by Margaret Dilloway? I finished it in two nights. It was a really great book. What is even cooler is that the author is going to Skype-chat with my book club later this month.:cool1: If you have read it, any ideas for questions?
The Help- Overall, it is not sad. The ending is bittersweet, but I hate sad books/movies (I always say real life is sad enough) and would not say it was a sad book.

I can't believe I am admitting this but I am currently reading America by Heart by Sarah Palin. I saw it at the library and was intrigued as I have been watching her TLC show each week.

I like the Kate Shugak series by Dana Stabenow. The newest one is called A Night Too Dark. Kate is an Aleut private investigator who lives & works in Niniltna and The Park area up in the Quilak Mountains in Alaska. She's self sufficient, feisty & very good with a gun. Great cast of characters, including a wolf hybrid named Mutt and a State Trooper boyfriend.

I am reading a YA series called Private by Kate Brian, I'm reading the second one, Invitation Only, right now. I also read the second Diary of a Wimpy Kid (so funny), and a YA book called Its Raining Cupcakes yesterday.

For my next "adult book", haha, I think I want to start Ape House by Sara Gruen. Hopefully its as good as Water for Elephants but I have a feeling I might be disappointed

I loved it too. If you can, get the audiobook, it's awesome. I got it from the library and the reading and the voices just made it so much better. It wasn't sad, a few parts here and there made me sad for one of the characters but no crying or anything (and I cry at just about everything!)

It was god. Not as good as Water for Elephants, but better than her other books, and a good read.

I just finished Angel Falls by Kristen Hannah. I started Magician's Assistant, which someone recommended on this thread. It's the first book I'm reading on my Nook Color! :cool1:

I am reading The Star Machine by Jeanine Basinger. Ever since I watched the series Moguls and Movie Stars on TCM, I am very curious to get a behind the scenes look at the early not-so-glamorous Hollywood.
