It really varies here.Question: Do you get a long-weekend out of this somehow or just Thursday off? Canada Day is tomorrow and it's great when it works out like that (a Monday or a Friday). If not we just have a random, mid-week civic holiday.
When I worked at the call center for the insurance company we only got 4th of July off and if it fell on a weekend no extra days (like if it fell on a Saturday you wouldn't get Friday off)--only Christmas Eve/Christmas changed that schedule.
My husband's company on the other hand they get 4th of July off and oftentimes the next day depending on when it falls.
When I worked retail the places I worked for never closed for 4th of July but most of the retail I worked for would pay holiday pay (normally time and a half) so it was something if I had to work (and most times I did). When I worked for my alma mater I did not get time and a half/holiday pay unfortunately though I still worked part of 4th of July-that location was open 8am-8pm 365 days of the year.
