I just read about someone being upgraded. I've been on 6 cruises (none of them DCL) and never heard of it happening to anyone. What is the reasoning behind an upgrade? I mean how do they figure out who they are going to upgrade and why? I'm sailing out on the Wonder in May and am just curious about it all. Thanks!

That's a good question...I would love to know the same...Especially about how the pick who they upgrade!

ok, here's the best case scenario that we've come up with...Disney doesn't tell you that they give upgrades, but you are most likely to get an upgrade when you have a lower category room. Here is what we figure...A lot of people can't afford the higher category rooms, so they book lower category rooms. When other people call, and want to book a cruise, all the lower category rooms are taken. They may not be able to afford a higher cat. room. Disney is going to lose a lot more money NOT booking that person, than upgrading the first person for free. Sooo, if somebody calls and wants to book a cat 11 room, but all cat 11's are full, somebody in a cat 11 may get upgraded so that Disney can sell another room. Did that make sense?

that's how it was explained to me..also that means more people onboard buying stuff and drinking.

it begs the question: who amongst the folks in categories 11, 10, 9 etc does Disney choose to upgrade....frequent cruisers?First timers?...I dont think there is speculation as to why Disney upgrades...it is how they choose who gets the upgrades!!!!

This fits into the category of questions that you need to ask "The Shadow".

Why?

Cause only The Shadow knows.....

The scenario mentioned before is the most likely and probably most common cause for updgrades, every case has its circumstances I'm sure. Here's our scenario of how we happened to give some lucky couple the opportunity to be upgraded. We booked a Nav Verandah room for 3 of us. The week before our cruise we had another person unexpectedly joining us for our vacation to Florida. Our cruise portion of our trip was booked solid. We couldn't add the extra person to our current room, it only slept 4. There was not another room available on the ship that slept 4 to move us to. On the day before sailing, DCL moved the 4 of us down to a category 11 room that was booked by a party of 2, gave the party of 2 our Nav Verandah room, (I'll bet they were dancing when they got to port and found out) and then our party of 4 were able to all cruise together and with a minimal additional charge for the 4th person, since we had downgraded our category.

There is some speculation that gty (guarentee) rooms get upgraded more often -- if you picked a specific room, there might be a reason you want to be there and the upgrade may be less welcome. And, since gty rooms are booked later than other rooms, this would mean early bookers would have less of a chance. Of course late bookers would have less of a chance as well, because there would be less opportunity to resell that room before sailing.

But early bookers, late bookers, and people with assigned rooms get occational upgrades, so this isn't the only variable.

We've done several cruises on the major lines and 2 on DCL. DCL was the first and only upgrade we've ever gotten. We booked almost 11 months out and booked 2 connecting cat 8's. About 2 weeks before we were supposed to sail I got an email from Dreams informing me that we had been upgraded from 2 connecting 8's to 2 connecting 4's. It was a shock and totally unexpected. No one could tell me why but we enjoyed the upgrade anyway.

  ok I understand only the shadow knows the reasoning behind an upgrade. I guess I was wondering if CAT 10 are popular and I happen to have a SPH room in Cat what are the odds. :badpc:

I was going to call a friend in :moped: las vegas and get it posted on the boards there to see what kind of of Action I draw lol.
