What are the negatives to staying at the Poly?

Trying to decide between Poly Garden View and Wilderness Lodge Courtyard View. The price is pretty close. I have stayed at the WL before and loved it. Never stayed at the Poly. I think I know the good things. What are the bad or not so good?

HI! Well, Tikiman would be a great person to Private Message about this. He's a Poly Lover!

The only negative I can think of is how spread out the buildings are. To use your Poly mug or get to the monrail can be a hike from some buildings.

I love the way WL is all in one building designed around a courtyard.

We love the Poly and really have nothing bad to say about it..........The Tokelau bldg is centrally located and the walk is beautiful with all the tropical foliage......It is on the monelrail which is very convenient.....

I'm in the opposite boat of you sort of...never stayed at WL Courtyard, but that's where we are booked because we were able to get the best discount and also thought we would try something new. I think if the $ was about the same, I would go back to the Poly (discounts are sold out there, tho). Can't really think of any negatives at the Poly except the price! My DH and I keep thinking of sticking with the WL though...want to try something different.

The Polynesian was the first on-site resort that I stayed at so perhaps that first stay has permanently altered my judgement, but the only thing that I don't like about the Polynesian is that it costs as much as it does :-)

There are some folks that say there is a 'Poly smell', and there was one time that the first room they took us too had a smell that annoyed my wife, but the bellman called back to the front desk and we were taken to a different room/floor without any delay.

If you were in one of the longhouses near the Luau site you might not like the noise from the Luaus - but who knows maybe you would like the music/etc... :-)

As someone has mentioned the Poly is spread out compared to the WL so you need to be 'careful' about your selection of longhouse. I personally like the Tokelau Building because of it's location, but we've stayed in Tahiti and Rarotonga and they were fine really. I didn't like the parking lot view we had from the Rapa Nui building :-P - but I have to admit it was handy to be able to drive the car to the door when we were packing up (folks we were traveling 'with' arrived a few hours before we did and didn't know any better when they were assigned the room).

The WL was perfect at Christmas, I thought the AKL was like an exotic safari, and I would really like to try the Beach Club so that I could just walk into EPCOT (also Storm-a-Along Bay :-), but the Polynesian is always the first place that comes to mind when planning the 'next' trip!

The biggest negative to me was lack of a hot tub. Also the main pool was very cold. The WL has 2 hot tubs right by the lake, and we used them every night.

--- deluxe resort property --- huge rooms---- monorail acess---magic kingdom location---- beauitful gardens, beaches--- great pools--- nice friendly people--- ok still looking for bad parts I know if its raining you need an umbrella cause the buildings are spread out----- theme, I like it but some people don't--- no hot tub--- tiki music non-stop--- gas light torches--- lots of resturants---tonga toast--- marina--- great shops for shopping--- quick service food at captins cook--- self parking near by--- larger bathrooms--- great laundry room if needed--- boat to magic kingdom/gf--- swings & hamcocks on beach--- bar/food located at main pool---

The Poly is one of the oldest resorts in WDW. This is a positive, IMHO, b/c the standard rooms are larger than those in the newer resorts. This is a negative, IMHO, b/c the rooms and buildings are, shall we say.... a bit dated and worn.

A major positive to the Poly is the monorail and transportation options. Unlike WL, you're a quick hop from MK and TTC. Like WL, you can relax and take the boat if you wish.

Another positive: self parking at the Poly is in the same location as the valet parking, so you don't have to hoof it 2 miles to get to your car if you self park.

But you asked about negatives.... IMHO, I think the food at WL overall probably is better than that at the Poly (although Poly has full room service and WL has limited room service-- if that's important to you). I think O'hana is a bit tired lately, but Artist's Point always gives you a good meal. Captain Cook's is kind of crappy....

All prices being the same, I'd probably go to the Poly for the convenience of the transportation options. Time is money at WDW.

Best wishes!

I have some mold allergies and at times, not all times, I was bothered by it at the Polynesian.

The rooms are much bigger at the Polynesian though.

I haven't stayed at the Poly yet, but I think the biggest negative would be the fact that since I love the Polynesian Luau so much, I'd want to attend it every single night. What's wrong with that? My husband would divorce me because he knows how much I enjoy the show, especially the male dancers. *Sigh* (Hee hee!);)

It smells so much that we asked to be moved to a different resort. They didn't do anything about it for 3 days after we complained and we had to complain again. And I got a rash on my feet from walking in the lake water which coincidently there was a news report on too much blue green algae in the water giving people harmless rashes. It was icky. And there were tons of birds which I adore but it made walking to the beach and on the beach quite icky! Wilderness Lodge looked like a great place to stay!

We LOVE the Polynesian!

On our trip in October we were assigned to the FIJI longhouse. At first I was worried that, because it is an older longhouse, the room would be small and musty.

It wasn't - it was wonderful! The room was a tad smaller than the rooms we've stayed in in TAHITI (maybe it was my imagination) but it was nice. The view was wonderful! From our balcony we could see a small beach with palm trees, the Wedding Pavilion, Luau Cove*, and the Monorail.

Also, FIJI is a hop-skip-and-a-jump to the GCH and the new volcano pool. One thing I loved about it - when I walked from FIJI to the GCH I'd pass right by the marina, look at Cinderella's Castle and in the distance I could hear the howling from Haunted Mansion!

* The noise from Luau Cove never bothered us - I never even heard it. Plus, the Luau isn't held every night.

Have fun where ever you choose to stay!

Debbie

We stayed at the Poly once and didn't care for it, but many people love it. I didn't like having the sink(s) in the same room as the shower/tub and toilet. To my knowledge the other deluxes have the sinks separate from the toilet and shower/tub.(haven't stayed at Cont.)

My only complaint about the Poly is that I wish they had screens on the sliders so that you could keep the door open and get fresh air without worrying about bugs, lizards, birds, etc...

In the grand scheme of things that is very minor, and I cant think of any other drawbacks for myself.
