What are craft mats used for?

I had gotten a Eyelet Punch Set, and the instructions says to make sure you're using a craft mat.

Any eyelet help also welcome .

1 - it will save whatever surface you are working from becoming scarred up.
2- it will save your tool from becoming dull hitting a hard surface.
3- it helps keep the paper from "tearing out" if there is no cushion.

I have a Making Memories one. But I have heard good things about the Martha Stewart one that is at Walmart. The price is decent too there.

if all else fails - save money and use a cutting board with a mouse pad on top.
