What are ActiveX controls and are they bad?

I am in the process of uploading a ton of pictures to be developed and it is taking forever. I am using Sonys Imagestation, and they offer a download that is supposed to make it so much easier, but the download says something about activex controls. I thought I had always heard that this was a bad thing, but I would think Sony is a reputable site that wouldn't download something harmful to my computer.

Has anyone else downloaded any of these programs on the various picture developing sites? Had any problems using them?

Fine to proceed if you know the site you are on to be a good site, like Sony.

Thanks Dan. I figured if it was from someone reputable it would probably be okay. I'm going to download it tonight and hopefully can get some of these pictures uploaded faster.
