What American foods should I try?

I don't know if this is uniquely American or popular elsewhere, but the Prime Time Cafe in MGM has a S'mores dessert that is just wonderful! They also serve a Po'Boy sandwich made with fried clams and a Cajun sauce. Yum!

Do they do fried cheese sticks or onion rings in Australia? I think REAL fried chicken is uniquely from the American South. At least it doesn't really taste the same anywhere else. Chocolate chip cookies? Quesadillas? And definitely New York cheesecake.

Corn on the cob? (Hey, the guys from Philly say steak sandwich, folks from Nebraska have to recommend corn, right?)

Also, I don't know where you'd find it but cucumber, tomato, and red onion salad is a great summer staple here. Do you have the dots ice cream?

I learned so much about American food by watching the Food Network (Canada). Even in Canada, we don't have a lot of those foods (but you don't have poutine, do you?!)

Now I love travelling and actually seeing all those places I heard about on Food Network!!!

How about baked beans? cole slaw?. reuben sandwiches? ambrosia salad? fried chicken? (I must be thinking picnic) peanut butter and banana sandwiches, potato chips optional? lobster rolls? buffalo wings?

I haven't read all the threads(most,though) and i can't remember anyone recommending collard greens. It is very much a southern U.S. dish. If you have the chance to visit a Cracker Barrel restaurant you could get a taste for southern food done right--pinto beans, country ham, chicken & dumplins, greens, fried apples. Plus you can listen to all the dulcimer music you can stand.Very southern.And they have great gift shops, so you can take home souveniers!

And don't forget Hot Browns.

Haven't noted any posts from Minnesota so here goes..
Typical festival/fair foods:
Deep Fried Cheese Curds (batter dipped cheese curds then deep fried)

"X" -on -a -stick ( If you go to MN state Fair there is a grand tradition of fair foods that are put on a stick, batter dipped and fried: deep fried candy bar, corn dogs, walleye, scottish eggs... even crocodile )

Typical potluck /shared meals:
Wild Rice Hot Dish (casserole dish of hamburger, cream of mushroom soup, and wild rice.. maybe some vegies. Wild Rice is grown in water , it is actually a grass not a grain)
Potato salad
Relish tray (pickles, black olives, green oilives stuffed with pimento)


Not for everyone:
Lutefisk (white fish that has been cured in lye then boiled until jelly like-- smells AWFUL)
Pickled Herring (small pieces of herring and onions pickled in wine vinegar.. served cold on crackers)

Something else specific to my area is Old Dutch brand Dill Pickle Potato Chips- yum! If you eat too many they kinda burn your lips

Is MILO in a yellowish can and sold near the powdered o r asceptic milk boxes? I think that's what it's called - I'll check again next time I go.

Milo is actually in a green can and sold near the Quik, Ovaltine etc. I haven't found it in any store around me but I buy it from the Australian catalog Co.
It's yummy!

P.s. Just had a promite sandwich on fresh bread for lunch. Now that's good tucker!!

Thanks everyone for your great replys!!! I can't wait to try the different foods!!! We don't have buffalo wings here and things like crab cakes/ lobster rolls etc are not that common in that form (we do have lots of seafood here though). I have heard of cheese steak sandwiches? they sound nice, and what does the pulled refer to in pulled pork etc? I don't think we have the same ice cream brands here either, and you seem to have different flavored coke drinks (we only have vanilla and lime). I am going to MNSSHP on 31st Oct and it will be interesting to try the chocolates (we don't call them candy here, we call them lollies). Thanks again everyone for your replys!!

The "pulled" in pulled pork is just the way it is prepared after cooking. Some people slice the barbequed meat,some chop it and others PULL the pork off in sections. It is l where the meat can be pulled like strings. Kind of a "with the grain or against the grain" type thing.

I definetly agree with whoever said pumpkin pie. I personally looking forward to trying beaver tails (is that what they're called) in Canada in epcot. I was born in Canada, lived here for 22 years, and still don't know what they are. For a real Canadaian treat, (I know you wanted US food,sorry) definetly go for the poutine. Now that's a taste of Canada, Eh?

When we lived in Australia we had Thanksgiving dinner for our Australian friends.... and they could hardly stomach the pumpkin pie! They eat a lot of pumpkin in Australia (at least in Broken Hill they did), but they were surprised when the pumpkin was sweetened and spiced..... I guess you could say that our pumpkin pie is like their vegimite to us!

So if you get the chance, do some Pennsylvania Dutch, like Pickled eggs. We pickle everything. Apple fritters are the best although we fritter everything , corn fritters, pinapple fritters ( its just sweetened, mushed and fried). Dunkin Donuts is way better than Krispy Kreme. Try sausage and peppers Philly style. YUM! Try a Twix candybar. Popcorn and Milk Duds eaten together.
I have to second the corn bread, fried chicken, grits and hashbrowns with chipped beef gravy! They ruined the corn bread muffins at Cracker Barrel, they are tasteless now. Don't forget to try a southern biscuit with honey. Anything Bar BQ is worth tasting and an open face Texas Chili burger. As you can see I have lived everywhere except the Mid West. Have Fun!

I will recommend hot sauce. Add a of drop to any meat before you take a bit and then be ready with some water just in case.
