What age did your teen start wearing make up?

What age did your teen start wearing make up? And what brand did she wear? My 8th grader wants to start wearing make up. She will be 14 in January. Though I wont allow her to wear it until she is atleast 14 I am wondering what brand to get, I may get her some for Christmas.

In middle school is the age I let my daughters where makeup. I made a big deal of it and took them to Macys Clinquine (sp) and had their make up done for free. Of course we purchased items to get them started. Fun mother and daughter day.

I just took my tweenie to the mall last week for makeup. She kept getting into my makeup (does mascara better than me!!!) so I talked with DH and we decided eyeshadow and lipgloss are acceptable now. She just started middle school and was super excited. We went to MAC and Benefit and she liked Benefit better. Told them we wanted eyeshadow and gloss and we wanted her to look her age (11 in 2 weeks). She got a cream eyeshadow in Getting Figgy and a lipgloss in Foxy Lady. You look at them in their tub and tube and they look CRAZY dark but wow, they are really pretty and subtle on. In fact, I'm probably going to go back and get some back for ME!!! I liked how they told her how to use it and what colors were good for her, because before she was smearing bright purple eyeshadow all the way up to her eyebrows. This eyeshadow, the more you rub it the more subtle it is. MAC, which I normally love, their colors right now are CRAZY bright so I'm glad she liked Benefit more. She deemed MAC lipgloss too heavy and sticky, hahaha!!! I spent $40 on the 2 items, sigh.

My DD isn't really into things like that so I waited until she asked. That was at the end of 8th grade, we ended up getting her some to wear to graduation, she was just turning 14 then. She hasn't worn it all summer, but may when school starts back up.

I didn't spend alot, again, I figured she wouldn't wear it much, I just bought Cover Girl and Almay. If she wears it more I will be more willing to put more money into it.

Most girls start in 6th grade here. Dd14 started very light, but now wears eyeliner, mascara, and sometimes lip gloss.

DD13 started wearing a little bit late last school year for special occasions. We have given her the go ahead for this year. She has neutral eye shadows and lip gloss. Her eyelashes are so dark and long she doesn't need mascara (can you say "JEALOUS"?) and doesn't like messing with it or eyeliner. DD11 is going into 6th grade (middle school here) and begging to wear some makeup already. I would like to think that we will make her hold out until late 7th grade like her sister, but she will sneak to get around our decisions. So, we will probably allow a little light shadow and lip gloss this year. Better to control it than have her sneak it and go way over board.

Brands...They both like my Bare Minerals, and they don't react to it.

The same is true for our area. The girls start to wear make-up when they enter 7th grade (middle school). A few of my girls (I am a 6th grade teacher) experimented a little toward the end of the school year.

I have never understood the point of clear mascara. What is the point of wearing mascara if you can't see it? I am not crazy about wearing mascara but I wear it. If on the rare occasion, I don't, someone always asks me if I am okay. (I suppose I look sick or sad or something.)

Maybe it is because as a redhead, you can't see my eyelashes unless I wear mascara!

The point of wearing mascara is to be able to see the eyelashes. For people who have great natural lashes, and who don't need to "paint" them, clear mascara helps to "set and hold" the lashes throughout the day. I for one prefer it to painting my lashes - I just need a little help for them to stand out, but don't like the idea of painting them a different color.

Okay, I'll be the odd one out.
I've let my daughter wear makeup as she pleases for years. I wanted to get past the neon green eyeshadow when she was still young enough that her foolhardy makeup decisions wouldn't scar her reputation for life!!! I like that it's not a big deal to her now. She goes all out for special occasions(Christmas and a wedding are the last two times I can think of); but she figured out pretty quickly that it's not that fun to use every day, so most of the time it's just tinted lipgloss and a little eyeliner.
Mom's beware though, the first time she came down with all her makeup on for Christmas, she had aged about three years. Dad almost came out of his chair!
We don't spend the "big bucks" on her makeup yet, just your run of the mill brands like Maybeline, but if we run into complexion problems I would absolutely spend more for a better quality product.

Definitely before 14. I think I was about 12 when I started doing just gloss and a little mascara. I started foundation, ect in high school. School rules at DD's private school say 6th grade, so not to school before then.

i started wearing full makeup (foundation, mascara, the whole she-bang) at age 14, in 8th grade. DD12 is in 7th grade, and still doesn't wear it. she hasn't asked. the only time she wears it is for her dance recital, and for the recital pictures. there are many girls in her class who have been wearing full makeup since 6th grade started last year, and seriously, they look like clowns with heavy, black raccoon eyes. you'd think their moms would say something.

We're going to start letting DD wear some makeup this year.

She is 11 and going into 7th grade. In our district K-6 is at the elementary school and 7-12 is at the high school. One or two of her friends have been wearing makeup for well over a year. I know she would like to wear some, but she hasn't been really asking or feeling left out.

We have been doing her eyebrows for quite some time and that actually makes quite a difference in her appearance. I was just tweezing them for her, but we went a few months ago to get hers threaded. The child was absolutely thrilled and kept saying that it looked like she was wearing makeup because it really changed the look of her whole face.


My parents let me wear makeup in middle school and I would do it every day-- foundation, liner, shadow, lipstick, etc. However, since 9th or 10th grade I rarely wear any makeup. Maybe if DH and I go out on a "date" and even then I just do my eyes and wear lipgloss. I'm starting a job in a few weeks, so maybe I'll have some mother-DD bonding time and buy some makeup.

I was allowed to start wearing pale/clear lip gloss, foundation, and mascara in 7th grade, no eye liner, lipstick, or eyeshadow until high school, although to be perfectly honest, I started sneaking make-up to school with me in 5th grade and just put it on there. By the time I was actually in high school and allowed to wear whatever make-up I wanted, I was a lot less interested in it and only wore mascara on a regular basis.

I would take her somewhere and have her make-up done. Maybe go to a counter at MAcy's, for example, ahead of time and ask what they would do for a teen, so you know ahead of time. I wish my mom would've done that for me and also taught me about plucking my eyebrows! College is way to late to learn that on my own!

For my 13th Birthday my mom took me to the mall and we went to the Clinique counter. They taught me how to care for my skin and how to apply makeup properly. My mom didn't want me walking around looking like a clown (like some of the girls at school did). So we saw the proper colors to use and she bought 1 or 2 items. Then we went to lunch and went to Target to get me anything else I needed since we now knew what colors to get! It was a very memorable trip and made me feel so grow up. I always looked nice and not over done.
