What activity do you do when you're upset?

I love this. I'm always saying "I need to look at water." Creeks, rivers, waterfalls, oceans, lakes, etc. I have several favorite places close by I go to. If I can't go to one I'll even settle for you tube videos.
Even the sound of running or rushing water. Puts me to sleep

I have gone through several phases. Walking fast outside sometimes. Drinking sometimes. Eating sometimes. My most recent trick is a game on my phone, it is a bit repetitive but if I can concentrate on it then I calm down.

I hate cleaning so that would not be my go-to!

Yea, cleaning does not help me feel better either, lol. I DO feel better when DH cleans for some unknown reason.

I've been told women tend to clean when they're upset. I suppose that's true for me sometimes. Mostly though I prefer to crank up the music loud and hit the elliptical or go for a walk. What do you tend to do when you're feeling upset?
I have a friend who responds that way. She says that when she feels things are falling apart, she finds solace in bringing order to what she can control.
I never get that upset. I only have 1st world problems.
Yep, that's pretty much me. I'm very, very good at letting things go.

Mostly I talk things out. By talking about what's going on, I process /analyze it, and by the time I'm done I've usually figured out a solution (or accepted what has to happen), and usually it isn't as bad as I feared it would be. But I often can't KNOW THAT until I've talked about it.

:thumbsup2Yes, this too, but that's for stressed-out upset. Funny thing; it's almost a Pavlovian response. The more intense things get, the sleepier I am. I'm definitely not one of those people who lays awake stewing over things. When I'm just at the end of my rope and feel like I can't take it for one more minute, I escape into sleep. It's one of the very few times in life I ever feel like I'm actually alone and as an introvert, it's a much-needed recharge.

I wish I could do that and envy those that can. If I'm stressed out I can't sleep. If I'm upset I normally can't sleep. My mind won't shut off. But I can fall asleep if say I've gone into adrenaline overdrive where I've gotten too much of it and my body gives out; I basically crash.

:confused3Ah well, everything has it's pros and cons. I'm an 8 hour drive away from my hometown and over the years there have been several occasions when family crises have necessitated emergency road trips. I've had it where I've needed to pull over once or even twice to nap for 1/2 hour just to manage the anxiety. I've also been known to pack it in early from work on exceptionally trying days and head straight home to bed for the night. And I did not win Mother of the Year for falling asleep in the waiting room while my 8 y.o. son was in emergency surgery for a broken wrist. (I may have even drooled. :o ) Like I said in my other post - it's an almost irresistible urge and not always super-convenient.

I forgot to add:
Magnesium. In the form of Calm gummies. Reduces anxiety and takes the edge off of things that make me edgy… I get them at my grocery store. I wouldn’t believe they work if I hadn’t tried them… Frankly, it’s less exhausting than punching a bag.

right. It’s definitely an urge to shut down and feel like you need to rest in order to clear your mind and “reset”.

I’m not a cleaner. I’ll only do that if clutter is the source of stress in the first place. Otherwise it’s maintain as normal.

But yeah. Looking in from the other side, wish I could turn sadness into productivity; instead of what seems like “wasting time”. I tend to replay things in my mind, too. So if I can’t sleep, I’ll watch a movie for distraction.

Most often I find myself eating my feelings. After I've filled up on comfort food, if I am stressed I will do some stupid, fussy busywork like mend socks using the tiniest stitches I can manage, or scrub the baseboards with a toothbrush, then once I'm tired I will sit and bingewatch one of my favorite shows, possibly while bingeing on comfort food again.

I play solitaire, which these days is insanely easy to do. It takes just enough concentration to distract me, but each hand only takes me about 3 minutes. Of course, sometimes I have to play 20 hands to get the full effect, LOL.

This:
I organize closets and shelves; gives me a feeling I have control

It's not cleaning, but organizing for me as well. DH knows, if everything is all of sudden super organized, I'm dealing with something.

Watch old shows that bring me joy.

I’m the opposite of many folks; when my anxiety gets bad I have a hard time eating much, other than something plain. Last year was so hard that over the winter I lost 20 pounds (then got on meds so I of course gained it all back; wish wine had zero calories!).

You're not alone. I lose my appetite when I'm upset too.
