WHAT A DIFFERENCE 6 MOS. MAKES (or how I learned to love MK) COMPLETE-WRAP-UP 12/29

Once we were back from Rafiki’s Planet Watch, I decided we should head to another continent and see if Max did, in fact, meet the height requirement for Kali River Rapids. Max and I regularly watched the brief snippets of park footage on the Disney website and every time we watched the clip for the Animal Kingdom, he seemed excited to try KRR. And I was psyched because of all the big kids rides at Disney, Kali is the only one with a height requirement of just 38” Yes, my boy is rather on the short side.

Mark and I were both into it and we strode up to the CM who was checking height at the entrance to the ride. The plan was to pick up FPs if Max was indeed tall enough and then go off to something else in the meantime. Max had a hard time following her directions to stand up straight and tall, but he eventually did, and she deemed him worthy of a wrist bracelet. We could ride!

We grabbed FPs and turned the stroller around…

Only to have Max go into mega-meltdown mode. One of the main things Max remembers from our February trip is the Boneyard, or as he refers to it, “the playground with the ropes.” Not the safari…not Its Tough to be a Bug…not even FOLK, but the playground. ARGH! Granted, I will give him that the Boneyard is a fantastically themed playground, but its still JUST a playground. I mean come on, kid, we’ve got slides aplenty back home. FOLK, not so much.

Deciding not to argue, Mark and I both took a deep breath and headed for Dinoland USA. We walked by EE and I considered it, but the single rider line was closed, the stand-by line was jammed packed with Brazilian tour groups and assorted other folks, and fast passes were out, as we already had them for KRR.

It was around this point when I had a stunning realization. My stomach did not feel right. It did not feel right to the point where I wondered whether or not a run-in with the Yeti would be a good idea. Hmm…what was that about? More water, perhaps?

We pushed onward to Dinoland, USA and the Boneyard. Max did, in fact, have a wonderful time and decided that getting drenched in the fountains would be an excellent idea.

We were finally able to pull him out with the promise of some ice cream. I kind of wanted a jalapeno cream-cheese stuffed pretzel, as the one I had back in February was easily one of the best snacks ever, but I was beginning to question the wisdom of that.

We left the Boneyard and got Max some ice cream and we sat on a bench and watched the world go by for a few minutes. Thus far, it had not been a particularly successful day. Once Max had finished his ice cream and it was time to move again, Max had another meltdown. This time there would be giving in, no placating him. We just needed to suck it up, do the right thing as his parental units, and put an end to suffering of those around us. So we headed back to the resort.

Would a restorative nap in a cool, dark place help us enough? Or would our disaster of a day become even more disastrous?

Once we were back, I realized that my stomach really hurt. I mean, seriously. I had stabbing pains and knew that, well, throwing up was probably in my future. YUCK.

OH....and did I mention that this was the night we had tickets to the Wishes! dessert party? No? Well yes, yes it was.

The three of us rested for awhile and I did, in fact, need to use the bathroom a few times. I thought perhaps if I got whatever was in there out, I would feel better. No such luck.

At four, when Mark and Max were ready to hit MK again, I decided to try and rally and go with them. I made it onto the bus and all the way to the MK, where I decided, barely off the bus, that what I needed was to go back to the resort. It was early enough that Mark and I agreed that if I felt better, I would join them. Gotta love Disney transportation in cases such as this!

I rode back on a nearly empty bus, feeling queasy the whole way. A perfectly adorable mom and daughter asked me some questions about Cape May, to which I responded in a manner that was brusque, I’m sure. My apologies, truly. Anyway, I decided to jump off at the Yacht Club as the Coke Zero I had not so wisely chosen to drink, was about to not-so magically reappear.

I raced into the YC lobby, expecting a bathroom to immediately present itself. When one did not, I raced for the rear door and just barely avoided throwing up in what is arguably one of the classier, adult hotels on property….and threw up my Coke Zero in a bush right outside the back door.

Luckily, I’m fairly certain no one noticed and all it was the soda. I realized then that I should have gotten real Coke, if anything, and that Coke Zero probably lacked whatever it was that made Coke syrup good for an upset stomach.

I started my walk of shame back to the BC and went into the Marketplace, thinking that some trashy magazines and perhaps some real Coke were in order, particularly if I was going to be spending what was supposed to be such a magical evening in our room, in bed, alone. I also decided that maybe some crackers or something might help and then decided on a package of chocolate covered pretzels, Lord knows why.

Thus fortified I returned to the arctic chill of our room and got into my marshmallow of a bed and…called my own mommy. Yeah, so I was feeling sorry for myself. Really sorry for myself.

That’s the thing about doing all this planning for these vacations…the buildup is often so intense that when the pay off doesn’t equal your expectations, its devastating. At least for me, it is. Then again, I’m one of those people who truly believes that if you plan it correctly, if you’re thoughtful enough, it will be perfect. Or pretty close. But vacations, clearly, are unpredictable things. One cannot predict the weather, or someone’s mood, or if you get bad news days before you leave (see our anniversary trip and/or February 2011 PTR for an explanation on that one, which honestly, you probably don’t need), or, in this case, if you get some sort of stomach ailment.

Almost as a challenge to my stomach, I munched a few pretzels, drank some Coke and when I kept it down for over an hour, decided I would put away the latest gossip and go out into the evening. But...would all of my wishes come true?

I really hope it got better, Tina!

Nothing worse than being on vacation ...... and especially if you are on vacation at the happiest place on earth! :goodvibes

Can't wait to read about the rest of the evening! popcorn::

You poor thing! :sad2: Throwing up is one of the absolute worst things. But, to throw up at Disney is just beyond awful! I sure hope your tummy was feeling well enough for you to stay at MK that night, even if you couldn't enjoy the desserts at the Wishes party. I hope you got to go to it so you can tell us if you think it's worth it. I've considered doing it but hear so many mixed reviews.

Tina, sorry you were sick. I can't imagine being sick at Disney. :sad2:

I hope you were feeling much better and that good things happened for Wishes.

Oh my...your day did a bit worse......

sorry about that....I know too well the planning vs. what really goes down syndrome that hits even the best WDW vacation planner. Hope your night got better at least.

Oh No Oh No Oh No! I can't believe you got sick. You poor thing. Please tell me you were just dehydrated and finally started to feel better. So cute that you called your own mom. I would do the sam thing. :goodvibes

I'll stop back to look at your pictures and see cutey pie Max - pre meltdown!;)

Hate it when a bad day goes even more downhill!!! The only good thing about being that sick is that you feel amazing when it is finally over. Hope that happens very quickly for you.

During our 2008 trip (Hurricane Faye and the Great Deluxe Dining Debacle) my oldest son was having stomach issues and I spent a day in our room reading Harry Potter to him- while my other son was picked for the Jedi Academy and I missed it! We had the Deluxe Dining Plan and Nate did not want to be anywhere near food. Bye Bye Cape May. Bye Bye Fantasmic Dinner. He and Mark also missed breakfast at Boma and at Kona (but Ben and I made it to those meals).

Can't wait to hear if you were able to rally that night!

Oh no! I can't believe you got sick. That is horrible. One of my down right worst fears is throwing up. (I think it almost boarders on a phobia for me)

I hope you felt better soon...and did get to go out and enjoy some MK!

Well...it could have been worse! :lmao:

I'm pretty sure it was something I had at Tusker House, because neither Mark or Max had any trouble.

And I have a few thoughts about the dessert party...:rolleyes1

I hope you were feeling better soon! How frustrating to be sick at Disney!

It could have been worse...it was definitely food poisoning of some pretty mild variety. Thank god!

Tina, sorry you were sick. I can't imagine being sick at Disney. :sad2:

It really could have been so much worse...Max could have gotten sick...or Mark...he's the worst when he's sick! :lmao:

Yes, yes it did and as for anything getting better...well...we'll see....

I was just so sad, Mary Ellen, I didn't know what else to do. Thankfully, I was the only one who got sick, so it must have been food related, I'm guessing.

So sorry you missed all of that! And getting sick in the middle of a hurricane while on the deluxe plan...can it get much worse at Disney?

Throwing up sick is the worst kind of sick there is, in my opinion. At least in the short term sense, anyway. Luckily, it went away pretty quickly.

Let's see...at last count I have considered no less than three different resorts for our February trip with numerous dates, room views, etc. When the AP rate came out, I jumped on the chance to save 40% during President's Week (and get an AP for myself...I'm going in October 2012 and nothing is stopping me...don't care if I fly solo, but I think my mom might be coming with me).

Only problem was that it meant I was downgrading to a king, standard-view room at the Contemporary. Not quite the location I'd been hoping for. I had always said that the garden wing wouldn't bother me....except that it did. It literally kept gnawing away at me and I knew that once we arrived, it would bother me still. Especially because CR's grounds just aren't all that spectacular, particularly after staying at Coronado (gorgeous!) and the Beach Club (SAB and the views of the Boardwalk...stunning!).

So I kept calling and calling to check availability in the tower...no luck.

Then I had another thought... What about the Poly?

Yes, what about the Poly? Well...I just called and got us a GV room there for the same price as the Contemporary. Feeling MUCH better about that. Even though our trip will be short, we're already eating there twice (possibly three times now). And even though I know we're going to be at MK A LOT this trip, we'll still be heading back to the resort in the afternoons and honestly, I just thought the CR might be a little boring. The pool is sorta blah, not many places to walk, etc and in the middle of a horrendous NE winter, I want to be outside. I want to be whisked away to the tropics! :rotfl: Or at least pretend I am! :goodvibes

I think this one will stick! :lmao:

So, despite the lack of fluffly white bed linens...I c

Tina, congratulations! As you know, the Poly was our absolute favorite deluxe (well, at least until this last trip), and we love everything about it and to us it is just a more appealing resort.

Yeah, Nicki was pretty persuasive, too! :rotfl: OK...not persuasive as much as demanding. :lmao: There's just not much at the Contemporary outside of that main building, as much as I love that main building. And the Poly just looks so beautiful! And they may just have the best dining options on property and MK is still just a quick monorail (or boat) ride away! :goodvibes

Congrats on the move to Poly! I think that's a good choice if y'all will be eating multiple meals there & it's not too far from MK.

Oh no! Being sick at Disney is one of the worst things I can imagine! And now I'll never be able to look at the Yak Club lobby the same again. ;)

I hope you got better quickly.

TINA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How could you??????????????? :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

So, you do NOT want to stay near us? Hm, I need to think about that! ;)

When you said you were going to book Garden Wing all Tom and I said, was NO WAY!!!!!!! :rotfl2:
I was still hoping you would get into the tower, oh well, the Poly will be it. Are you sure you wanna stay there? :rotfl2:

Well, you still have about 4 months to change your mind, we'll see! :thumbsup2

I have to say that when I stayed at BLT last year I thought the garden view rooms at the Contemporary looked kind-of cool. They ones facing the lake looked so private! But, I can definitely see the allure of the Poly and since I will probably never stay there (being DVC and all), I think its an excellent choice. So congrats!!!!! :cool1: The pool and the beach are majorly awesome!!!!! Very excited for you!

I know someone who knows you're gonna LOVE the Poly.... :rolleyes1
