What’s for Dinner Tonight?

I went to a farmers market today. I got fresh pasta and sourdough bread so I made pasta with meat sauce, salad and heated the sourdough. Fresh pasta is always a treat.

I’m trying to figure out my Christmas Day menu so I can grocery shop early tomorrow then avoid the grocery stores. We are just having my parents over and they requested appetizers and desserts.

Instead of family lunch today, we baked cookies. Next year we are doing it at my house. My mom’s house is just way too small for all of us to be in the kitchen together.
Tonight we ordered pizza and had a Greek salad.

My hubby is on is his own for dinner tonight, since we had a late lunch and then had a quick stop at the grocery. Got my cookie dough ready for baking later.

@LoveDaisy. I rolled the whipped shortbread into logs, wrapped in plastic and then put into the freezer. I have better luck handling shortbread dough by doing it that way. I'll slice and then top with my Christmas sugar & bake.

We got out of our routine this weekend. Went and looked at Christmas trains at the mall last night, so ate a pizza out. Grabbed lunch out with friends after church and split a burger and fries tonight after doing some Christmas shopping. So we have to reign it back in this week. We cooked for Thanksgiving, just the 2 of us, and it was almost $90. So not sure what we're going to do for Christmas.

Spent most of the day at the Metropolitan Museum.
Had breakfast with a friend at the Balcony Lounge before our annual viewing of the crèche display. Lovely pastries and coffee.
Then off to see an exhibit by a female artist from Finland. Followed by a visit to the museum shop for last minute gifts and a farewell early dinner at Café Sabarsky at Neue Galleries.
I had a smoked trout crepe and a cucumber and lemon drink; closed my eyes and the meal reminded me of Vienna. She had chicken schnitzel and potatoes and seemed very happy. Probably dreaming of her upcoming trip to “Mittel Europe” the idea of which makes me a tad green - there’s always next year, lol.

Back home by late afternoon which gave me time to mellow out listening to Christmas music and reading past menus. A true NYC December weekend.

Made an “executive decision” last night and as such I’m getting ready to go food shopping in Manhattan this morning. This is sure to “thrill” my home attendant but despite the cold I need to get out of the house.

Been mostly simple dinners the last few days. Younger son's shoulder surgery went well, but he'll have a long recovery period. Fortunately, he's home from college until late January, so he can at least start his PT near home, then we'll have to find him a therapist near his school.

Enchiladas on Saturday, lobster ravioli last night. Trying to stick to things that he can eat one handed. I do prime rib on Christmas Eve - my son said I better make it tender enough that he can cut it with a fork.

Do you have something you traditionally make for Christmas? If I’m making a meal I make a lasagna. It’s cost effective, you can make it advance (either the day before or weeks before and freeze it). I make a salad and serve it with bread. It cooks while you enjoy your Christmas so no one is tied up in the kitchen all day.

Made White Chicken Chili last night and will have leftovers tonight and tomorrow. I also was able to get 4 one cup servings in my Souper Cubes and frozen them. Will pop those out and bag them up some time today.

I make a salad and serve it with bread. It cooks while you enjoy your Christmas so no one is tied up in the kitchen all day.

We don't.

We've only lived away from family for 3 years now. So really new to this stuff. Last year, we made a ham, green bean casserole and corn casserole, bread and dessert on Christmas Eve then joined friends at Saltgrass on Christmas Day. We didn't have to pay anything for that as we had stacked rewards. We've done the same this year, and we have a reservation with the same friends. So we might do that since it won't cost anything.

But we're not sure about Christmas Eve. We've been invited over to another friend's house. But they want us there at 5, and we're planning on Christmas Eve service at church at 5. So we might have to forgo their house. And DW has said over and over again that she's not making a lasagna ever again. Last time she made one, it took forever and didn't turn out very good. She said never again.

We might just get another ham and stuff to cook. I just hate the idea of spending $90 like we did at Thanksgiving. The good thing is we were able to eat leftovers for a couple of days. But we're heading out of town Saturday morning, so we'll only have 1 day to eat whatever leftovers without having to throw them out. So that's why we're trying to explore some options.

tonight will clear the last of the frozen I pulled from the freezer the other day (there's some space in there now ), tomorrow will be Marie Calendar pot pies (some more space cleared out).

Nothing traditional. It changes year by year. This year, just 3 of us, so DD got to pick and she wants Chicken Fajitas.....and be sure to have cheese, sour cream and avocados


And then a cookie tray of course.
Eve is always brought in sandwiches.....this year Firehouse Subs....and chips. They spend the night
Breakfast is always cinnamon rolls (gluten free.....so hard to roll up). some kind of muffins (this year blueberry) and scrambled eggs.

We did boxed lasagna one year when we had Covid. It sucked. Not sure DW will like this idea as it's not very traditional. But I can definitely see. May just do a nugget try from Chickfila. Seems festive enough. Or might just bite the bullet and do the traditional Christmas dinner, even though it's super expensive and tedious to spend all afternoon cooking for 2 people where most will end up going in the trash when we get back into town next week.

I am off from work this week. Met my bff for lunch on the shore so she could get a GC for her aunt. Lunch was delicious. We had clam chowder, shared oysters, then I had scallops and she had short ribs. DH met her husband and they grabbed pizza locally.
