Well, that kid didn't do anything an he IS DEAD!!!

The onlookers outnumbered those fighters like 10:1, they didn't have to fight, they could have stopped the fight without fighting.

But, as long as they have been warned: "if you do something, you may die"...

First and foremost, those kids gathered around to watch the reality show. Bet you they didn't realize the magnitude of what's happening until after the fact. Or were they afraid because they may die, I don't know.

But, IMO those kids doing nothing are guilty of doing nothing, and I think that every night when they lay in bad they wonder, if there was something they could have done to save an innocent life.

I completely agree with you, and don't place any blame whatsoever on the bystanders. By helping they would have a target placed on their heads. It is sad but true, there is no way they could help without surrendering their own life as well, whether it be that day or two weeks from then. I think it was very brave of the person videotaping to stand there and get it all on tape and then hand it over to the police. There wasn't much else they could do. I'm just glad they have that tape in order to help convict the murderers.

Eight Florida teenagers are in custody for beating up a defenseless girl. Not news, no, but the reason behind it is: The kids who did the deed planned to put the video on YouTube in the hopes of becoming Internet celebrities once the video was widely seen online.

Six girls did the beating (which ended with a concussion) while two boys stood lookout. In a statement after the eight were all rounded up and arrested, one of the girls' mothers said that the victim of the attacks had "provoked" it by "threatening and insulting the girls on their MySpace pages."

The video did indeed make it to YouTube but it's since been removed. You can see snippets of it here or find it by searching YouTube, but it's largely what you're expecting.

Reaction has been pretty swift, with many naturally turning their ire not just on the teens but also on YouTube and MySpace for not policing content better. Does censorship work? Is it even possible for YouTube to vet every video that's uploaded to its site? YouTube serves some 100 million videos every day. What kind of manpower would it take to monitor all of it? And how would one distinguish between a real fight and a staged melee that's part of a (fictional) short film. (Heck, even Lonelygirl15, the YouTube darling, died in her eponymous show's last episode.) Censoring one type of content (which YouTube actually does plenty of, actually) is a slippery slope.

And really, what would be the point? If not YouTube, would the teens have posted pictures or video clips on their blogs? Or simply used another hosting service? Kids have been beating each other up for centuries, since well before YouTube came along, and they'll be doing it after it's gone, too

Invoking WWII? Really? Since you are going there, you might recall we pretty much sat on the sidelines until we were directly attacked by Japan so lets not pretend that America was the first dog into the fight.

No I don't think they were taping for the police. That wasn't their initial intention but in the end they did the right thing. When the attackers moved on they went to help the kid.

Where in Chicago are you? You ever been to Pullman? I grew up not terribly far from there. A little east and then a little west. A few years back an older neighbor of ours, he lived 3 doors down, went out to investigate and help when he heard shots in the neighborhood. Caught a bullet to the head. No one came to help him when he died.

It is so easy to judge the bystanders actions from our cushy little middle class homes. Do you worry about drive by shootings? Gang crossfire?

Is there a law against things like that, watching a crime and not doing something like calling the police, etc.? If so I hope they do something with that person also, you don't just stand by and watch things like that, its inhuman. You don't have to intervene if u feel ur life is in jeopardy but you do have to go try to get help.

I actually thought that too.

If everyone continues to be afraid of these animals, they will continue to win. By invoking fear to the point of watching them beat an innocent boy to death, they continue to have power.

Had I been there, I would probably be dead, too. Why? Because I would have tried to stop them, and the rest of the sheep would have just watched as two people were killed in front of their eyes...

Sheeple, willing to sacrifice anything and anyone for personal safety. How anyone could witness that, do nothing, and sleep at night is beyond me. What if that child were yours? How would you feel watching a tape of these sheeple standing by and watching your child murdered?

The sheeple disgust me more than the murderers. They are probably sitting around right now talking about this as if they were victims, too...

I don't understand the reference to "middle class." What has being middle class have to do with this? Are you giving these animals an excuse for their actions because they are poor?

So because you are "poor" it gives you a pass to do what these animals have done? Because you are "poor" it gives you an excuse to join or form a gang and prey on others and commit crimes? Give me a break. Poverty has nothing to do with it. These animals choose the lifestyle because it's easier than working hard to get out and make something of yourself.

I'm middle class and I worry every freaking day that I have to drive through an inner city to get to where I work. I worry that some scumbag will try to rob me while I'm stopped at a traffic light or some gang member might decide that they don't like me driving through their hood.

So some middle class folks seem to have the same problems as the inner city folks do.

I'm not giving them a pass at all. I don't know where you stretched that from. I think what these murderers did is beyond disgusting. But I'm not going to condemn bystanders in a car video taping by a 3 minute video. You can't tell from the tape if they called the cops or not. They did go over to help once the mob dissipated.

I said it is easy to judge when you aren't mired in that lifestyle. It is easy to say what you would have done when you've never had to make that choice.

So driving to work, though the inner city. Would you stop? Get out and help?

This is what's wrong with this generation. Either the parents don't give a crap what their kids are out there doing, because they're too wrapped up in themselves and their own problems, or they're busy making bullcrap excuses for their snowflakes. You justify your kid gang beating somebody by saying the victim deserved it? I hope she accepts the same excuse when her useless piece of garbage child is beat up in jail. My mother taught me something when I was younger -- there's always someone bigger, tougher and crazier than you. Now when they go to jail, they'll be playing with the big kids.

Fear has nothing to do with the person filming not stopping it. Fear had nothing to do with anyone not doing something. They were intentionally filming a fight, they knew what was going to happen.

At the end there are females who are begging that the killers get off him but not one "man" saying a word. Not one person yelling for help, not one yelling for someone to call the cops. And look at the nice vehicles--you can't tell me there weren't a number of cell phones in that crowd.

Fear has nothing to do with it. Gang mentality plain and simple.

I grew up in a neighborhood very much like this one. You learn at an early age to keep your mouth shut and your eyes closed. Police at my high school were a daily sight.

You have to remember if you do something and get yourself in the middle of these situations the next day you have to walk by their house, you have to go to school with them, or their friends/family...you may have to ride the bus with them and pray they dont get off at the same stop as you.

Driving through the inner city is nothing. Try living it. We moved when I was 19 and never looked back.

Dont judge the people that witnessed this and did nothing, their mothers are glad they didn't because they are home safe.

Now that the criminals know someone turned in that tape you can bet their friends are taking down names now.

You are seriously comparing living in the "hood" to driving through it everyday??

I totally disagree middle class do NOT have the same problems inner city folks do. I live in the suburbs now, I grew up in what you would consider a "hood" the problems aren't even close.

Joining a gang alot of times is for safety - not necessarily money.

The ones that had the camera knew the others. They were saying stuff about the fighting going on. They were not sitting there in fear!

If I heard things on the video that said "oh my god!" "what are they doing?" or ANYTHING that sounded like shock or fear it would be different. That is not what was there. And it wasn't like the camera was there by accident.

The ones filming and the ones laughing and making comments are just as guilty.

If they are so afraid, why turn the tape in? I mean the killers are taking down names anyway, why not call the cops??

There are many people that live in fear because of the neighborhood they live in. I am positive there are people in that very neighborhood living that way, but its not the ones in that video or making that video.

Very few are born EVIL, most are are brought up to be that way...what kind of parents are raising children that do these things? And what kind of parents are raising children that can watch a friend be murdered and not do everything they possibly can to stop it? Yes, it was suicidal for that man to walk out alone, but why was he alone? Because he was the only one who cared. We live in “it’s not my fault or responsibility” century. However, if the whole block stepped outside, would you say that he’d still be alive?

I must say that the justice system gives more rights to the criminals then to the victims. Something needs to change there…
