We've become *that* family

We have become "that family" as well. I went four times as a kid with my family, and then my DH and I took our three sons in 2010. We loved it so much we went back in 2011. DH said, "OK, we're not going to Disney World every year." My mom wanted to celebrate her retirement at WDW in 2012, so we couldn't say no to that. Fast-forward, and DH is totally onboard. We live in the Midwest, but are AP holders. We did adults-only trips in 2013 (WDW), 2014 (DCL), twice in 2015 (WDW in January to escape the cold and again in December to say good-bye to the Osbourne Lights and enjoy all the other Christmas fun) and 2016 (WDW). We also did a family cruise in 2013, WDW and Universal in 2015, and spent spring break as an extended family in 2016. So, I've gone to WDW every six weeks since October. Usually now if someone asks where I'm going I'll say Florida. If they press, I'll say Disney World. Many don't understand. I'm ok with that. But it's always fun to find those who do get it. I'm thankful to have a few of those in my day-to-day life.

I could handle a day or two at the beach, tops. I love it, but I couldnt do it day after day.
Beach vacation doesn't appeal to me either. As a child we vacationed with relatives in Florida every year and visited the beach regularly. Over many years though I developed a phobia of the ocean...probably too much Discovery channel. I still love everything about it, other than being in it :scared:

I like to watch the beach from the balcony of our family condo lol

We became that family several years ago. We would go two or three times a year. The funny thing is that some of the people that make fun of you are the people that go to the beach every year. We did the beach thing for a while and it got boring real quick. I just wish we lived a few hours closer...
Agree about the beach vacation. We had a timeshare with steps onto the beach and I'd walk on the sand for 5 minutes. Then I'd end up planning trips to St augustine, universal, ikea lol.

I don't really get envious when people say they're going to their typical, annual summer beach house.

Hang in there, they'll stop saying anything after you become a "several times a year" family. No one says a word to me now.

Yeah, this is pretty accurate. Went twice last year. Going again in September, whoever thinks we're weird will get over it. :flower3:

We are going on a little quick beach trip too, nothing big. Funny about the poster above, because some of the people who ask us if we ever get tired of going to Disney are the same people who go to the beach or some island or something every single year. Don't get why they don't see the hypocrisy in that. Go figure.

I am in that club as well. I just don't talk about it with other people unless I know they will be supportive of me spending my vacation money the way I want. :)

Well, we've taken it a step further as we are that family... without kids (yet). If you think people look at you funny when you say you're going to Disney AGAIN, just imagine people's perplexed faces when you say it as a late-20s childless couple. :rotfl:

Just imagine the looks you get when you are retired 60 somethings!!!! And, yes, we do go alone. Sometimes the kids/grandkids coordinate some days with us, but we gotta say we LOVE our alone trips. We go at our own pace,do what we want to and when we want to. It's all good:)

We love being with the family at WDW, but have found it to be our special place too.

So, we get a lot of, "what, you're going to WDW again? didn't you go last year? what do you do at an amusement park all that time?" Obviously, they don't get it. My very favorite comment is, "Isn't Disney just for kids, with kiddie rides and characters?" Yep, that one gets me!

I usually don't mention where we are going, though all the family knows:) Sometimes I explain to others, sometimes I just get tired of all the explaining over a vacation that we love and enjoy. Sometimes, I ask them, "don't you go to ____ lake, resort, beach every year?, same thing!" Still, they don't get it because it's Disney!

We went on our once in a lifetime trip in 2005' when our son was 5. In August we are going on our 13th trip and our son will be celebrating his 16th birthday there. Forgot how many times he has been there on his Birthday now. We are very lucky that most our trips have been for three weeks. We always manage a beach holiday in Majorca and a city break of some time so not exclusively Disney. I am always amazed how snooty some people get about our holidays. They look at you as if to say but surely you'd rather be trekking around India!!
Anyway we have had so many fantastic holidays I wouldn't swap the memories for anything

This x 1000 !!! We do the exact same --- there are those TRUE friends that are excited for us, because we love it --- and those that sort of mock us --- we just don't tell those people anymore

At least you can use the kids as a partial excuse. We don't have kids and we're both in our early 30's now. I deal mostly with people who like to spend their vacation time lifelessly laying in the sand or going on a cruise. It's funny how a cruise is something that is acceptable for adults to do but Disney World isn't, when Disney World offers anything a cruise offers plus much more.

We went on our "once-in-a-lifetime" trip to WDW in September of 2013. We're now going on our 5th trip this September :).

We have done a lot of International and National travel and no matter where we go we end up wishing were in Orlando. To me, the lazy river at Typhoon Lagoon is just as great as a beach in Hawaii. Maybe when the kids have moved out I will want to expand my horizons again but we took them to Europe last year and they thought it was stressful. My daughter actually asked us not to "Do That Again" until after she moves out.

Just take a Disney cruise through Europe or adventures by Disney ;)

We don't typically like beach vacations, but we are spending the long weekend coming up at a beach resort and I am so excited for it. We will only be there for 3 whole days though and 2 half days. I can't imagine much more than that however and if we spend that time at Disney, it would feel way too short.

Oh and the beach is costing us as much as Disney!! Insane...

I love spending a couple nights at St Pete or Siesta Key after a Disney trip, but the lodging is always twice as much per night, if not more for a 3 bedroom :crazy2:

So, for a funny :) We took the kids to see Jungle Book today (really enjoyed it), and my five year old, out of the blue leans over to her father and says, "Daddy, when we go back to Florida, would you rather do Lego Land or more Disney? Because I want to do more Disney."

I am in that family too :) Welcome.

And now, after four years so is DH (before he went just cause I said so - now he is the one planning)

Gwaaaa....we get it, too. We went on our "once in a lifetime" trip in 2005, we saved and saved for it. Kids turned 13 and 8 on the trip. Then I got a bonus at work and we went in 2006 for husban's birthday. Then we drove in 2009 so our family would have a road trip. Then we went to LA in 2011, so we went to DL. (Oh went to DL in 1995 for a wedding when dd was 2 1/2). Then we had such a good time in DL, we went to WDW for son's 15th birthday in 2012....by this time, my father was losing it! Why so many trips to Disney? This coming from the son of the man who took me on my first trip in 1976, my grandfather, who went crazy in love for Magic Kingdom!!! He was 67 at the time and I was 7, but we acted like kids. I "see" my grandpa every time I walk down Main Street! So we attempted to keep our 2012 trip a secret...we told family we were going to Wisconsin Dells! First off, one of my ex-employees(we are friends on Facebook) was on our flight! Then, we ran into my sister's neighbor at HS! Then, we were picked on son's birthday to be Grand Marshals of the 3pm parade! Where they announced our name and hometown! As we drove through MK on the car, people from surrounding towns yelled and waved at us...lol! So much for a secret. We went again in 2014 for MY birthday...I used to work in retail, so I could never go during holiday time/my birthday, but I changed careers in 2013, so we had our holiday trip at last!! Now, k7ds are grown and husband and I are about to celebrate 25 years married. Guess where??? Family thinks St. Pete Beach, but I'm surprising husband with 3 days there and 6 at our favorite place. I do have friends who are Disney freaks, and my aunt and cousin, too...but my dad (mom is departed) and my siblings do not get it. We do go to other places and stay in a cottage in Michigan every summer, plus we live in the Chicago area. We also go to LA all the time for our son, who is an actor. But WDW is my happy place! My husband knows we are going on a trip, but he thinks its to New Orleans....he keeps dropping hints that he wants to go to WDW, but I say not until Star Wars Land opens. I cant wait to spring it on him in St. Pete!!! It is our first trip solo, ever...except for overnight trips. No trips when we dated, we didnt have a honeymoon, and our daughter was born a week after our 1 year anniversary! My husband loves WDW as much as me. Cannot wait!!!!

YOU will have a whole new level of fun. It's so wonderful when you and your husband get to be the kids on the trip and just do whatever you want!

I have trained my co-workers well, instead of asking "where are you going on vacation" they now ask "when is your next Disney trip".

The ones that get looked at funny because we're planning on going back to Disney only two years after our last trip.

Yeah, those comments...coming from people who go to the river or beach every stinkin' year...but heaven forbid you go to Disney every year....geez.
