Wet Suits for Pools

Hi All,

We'll be visiting in January and the kids love the pool. However, some days the pool can be a bit chilly during that time of year, even if it's heated. Does anyone have any suggestions of wet suits or something like them that will give a little warmth but not be incredibly expensive?

If it helps, the kids are in the age range of 3 to 8.

Thanks for any ideas!

What do you consider "expensive"? You can get a child's shorty 3mm wetsuit for around $50.00. Call scuba shops and ask what they have available.

For us, the pools are lovely and warm when it's below 80 outside. It's just the getting OUT of the pool part that's hard!

We've been in January and the temperatures were in the 80's.

We've been in Jan when it was so cold you needed caps and mittens to stay warm. It can be warm, but it can also be quite chilly.

How about a long sleeve rash guard shirt? I've even seen Capri bottoms at lands end. Possibly cheaper than a wet suit.

Rash guards are to protect you from the sun. OP is looking for something to keep them insulated from the potential cool temps. Check your local scuba stores. I'd be hesitant to drop that kind of money on something that may or may not even be of any use.

We were there at the end of January this year and my kids went swimming while my MIL and I huddled under blankets with hot coffee.

Someone at the edge of the pool with big towels when the kids get out.

I would just have big towels waiting for them as they get out of the pools.

I would probably by a hooded long sleeve robe instead of a wetsuit. My kids seem oblivious to water temperature, but the air temp getting out can make them shiver.

I agree with Ladyfish77 about calling around to scuba shops, but it might be a bit pricey.

You might also consider checking consignments shops or CraigsList now for some wetsuits. Since they are in season now, you might have better luck finding them rather than waiting until the winter when people have them packed away.

Ps. Swimming in January? Too cold! lol (says the heat-loving Floridian)

Also OP you say your kids love the pool. Well they may not like the pool in January. :thumbsup2

But I'm with others thinking wet suits are a bit over board since the next time you may need them your kids will have most likely grown out of them.

I think this is a great idea! That, and book a room as close to the pool as you can to limit the cold walk back to your room.

I'd go with the lots of towels idea. We swim in January, on the warm days. We go mid day when it's warmest.

We go in February and my boys love to swim. The pool is warm, but the air can be cold when you get out. The kids don't usually mind.

Chilly can be your most uttered word in January down there. If you love the pools and watermarks as we do consider September next time. Hot as hades and awesome for pool time.

Thanks, all! We've been in January before and it is just so hit or miss. Sometimes its not too bad, but other times they are freezing. The main challenge we run into are the water slides since they have to keep getting out of the water to go down them.

Do the rash guards help.at all with the wind when getting in and out or is there really no difference? I also agree that $50 a pop for a wet suit is a bit much for one vacation.

A rash guard is just a shirt with UV protection. They come in long sleeve, short sleeve and different thicknesses, but when you get out of the pool it's just a wet shirt and won't provide any more warmth than a bathing suit.

I think the only plus for a rash guard is that pretty sure they are not cotton so they wouldn't stay as wet but I don't see any plus keeping them warmer.
