Just came across this sale after a flight alert popped up (i usually cancel those after i book to avoid tears ) I priced out our trip and it comes in at about the same ... point of reference 2 RT from Pearson just a tad under $680 for the end of January. here's the details

Thanks for posting this. After reading your post, I checked out Edmonton to LAX flights for next July. I was able to book on July 4 for $100 plus tax and fees. "Tax and fees" turned out to be $94.47, so the total cost was $194.47 each. This is the first time in recent years that WestJet has offered cheaper flights than Air Canada. The last time I was able to book a flight this cheap was July 2011.

No good deals on LAX to Edmonton, so I'll wait to book the return portion of the flight.
