Western State Connecticut University?

Hi, my DD just told me that she wants to apply here.

Is this area a generally safe area? Is there much to do around there?

Any experience here? any advice welcome, thank you

My DNeice just graduated there last year, she loved it. I think the area is generally safe, but I think that may be true of all campus'. I went to CCSU and we all knew what areas of town wern't the safest for us to be in.

My DS is a junior this year and we are hoping to do some campus visits over april vacation. I don't know how far Danbury is from you, maybe you can take a weekend trip to see the area for yourself.

Thank you for your reply. She has applied to CCSU actually and excited about this one. She really wants to go to UCONN, but her GC told her that was her "reach" school. Since we're approaching deadlines, I think we'll have to apply and see if she gets in and then visit. She's devoured the website already.

I graduated from WCSU in 1994 and we lived in Danbury until 2002. I loved the school and the teachers. I was a commuter-student, so don't know anything about campus-life in that regard, but the area is definitely safe. My girls went to the elementary school that shares the WCSU main campus.

What field of study is she looking in to? I majored in Communications.

Hi, that is good to know. She wants to major in Pyschology. I wish she'd want to stay in state here in NH, but she loves CT. My DS is So.Windsor and my DSIL is in Colchester, so at least I know family will be close if she should need someone right away.

Good to have family nearby. Give the campus a visit. I liked it.

The area has a lot to offer, in addition to being just 15 min from the Brewster Metro North station that has trains in to NYC.

Good luck with the decision-making process. I'm still 2 years away from going through it with DD15.

WCSU has a good nursing program. They are practically right across the street from Danbury Hospital. They were originally a teacher's college. The campus is divided. One part in downtown Danbury and the other in western Danbury.
My DS is a junior and while he would really like UCONN, I wish he would go to Western. It is closer to home.

I graduated from Western in 1992. I liked it. It wanted a state school that was inexpensive. I visited Southern and Central, but liked Western the best. I stayed in the dorms all 4 years; they were basic but doable. The split campus was kind of inconvenient but mostly business courses were at the second campus so I only had a handful of classes there (I was an English major). The area around the campus was completely safe. There are lots of retail areas nearby and lots of kids worked at the Danbury Fair Mall; I certainly frequented it a lot! I occasionally get alumni news from them and it looks like they have made some nice changes to the campus, like a parking garage and new student center. Good luck!

thanks every one. The split campus is a bummer. We are visiting the campus tomorrow morning. I'm having DD read these posts. She'll be able to see for herself and we'll ask questions too.

I graduated in 1991 from WCSU. I loved the campus. Nice and small. I lived on campus at Fairfield Hall (all girls dorm) for 2 yrs. Then I moved off campus when I got a full time job as a police dispatcher. I worked FT and went to school fulltime. I majored in Justice and Law Administration so most of my classes were on the West Side campus. They do have a bus that runs all the time between campuses. I really didn't mind the commute the first 2 years before I got a car. I also worked on campus as a police dispatcher too. It was a relatively safe campus. It has its own campus police officers, they are not security- they are actual police officers. I loved being close to downtown - I use to walk there on the weekends. I met DH there. He was a police officer bf he transfered to UCONN. He was also a student there in the 70s too.

They have done alot of updates/construction to the campuses in the last 20 yrs. It looks really nice. I especially loved the classes/professors. The class sizes are smaller than at UCONN. The professors know who u are. I had several teachers that greatly impacted my life. My JLA professors were actually in the field- had 1st hand knowledge of what they were teaching. I was able to track the success of one professor that stated out as a SGT in the State police and eventually worked his way up to head of the state police. Professors that went the extra mile to help u in class. I was doing miserably my freshman yr in math, Professor called me in and offered to work 1 on 1 with me. I passed the class w/ an A! I would never have been able to w/o the extra help. When I was hired as a FT dispatcher for a local PD the end of my sophmore yr-- training was during the wk of finals. All of my teachers were willing to move/reschedule the finals for me. One even let me bring it home and fax it back to him! Granted it has been several (well more than several years) since I have attended it gives you a general idea how the professors were. Hopefully not much has changed.

WCSU was NOT my 1st choice. I wanted to go to school down south. But my dad was diagnosised w/ termal cancer my senior yr of HS. My mom and oldest sis did the guilt trip into applying to WCSU and eventually guilted into attending to be close to home. I wasn't happy to be there but eventually fell in love w/ the school, staff, students and DH! BTW my dad lived for 1 1/2 yrs beyond the diagnosis. The staff was awesome when he passed. I truely don't think I would have gotten all the attention/assistance if I had gone to a larger school as planned.

The cost of the school was also very reasonable then too. Not sure how it compares to now a days. Mostly it is a commuter college. I would not hesitate to let one of my DC attend if they wanted to.
