Has anyone done the Western with an infant? Just curious of any excursions either Disney or on our own where we might be comfortable taking a 6 mos old. We also have 2 dds who are 6 and 7 so I wan them to enjoy themselves. On previous cruises we have snorkled but that is impossible to do with the baby.
Any suggestions???

Sorry that I can't really help you but saw that you are almost in the same situation that we are. We cruised in 2001 on the Eastern with our son. We are going again March 29,2003 and we will be taking our 6 yr old son and our 11.5 month old son. We are trying to think of what adjustments we need to make for travelling with such a small little one. We will probably just get off at each port, take some pictures and do some shopping. From everything that I have seen unless you have some family or can leave them in Flounders while you get off the boat most of the excursions do not allow children as young as our little ones to go along. Actually I was writing to see when you are going. I would love to hear what your experience was and what you thought was easier and harder than you thought and what items you brought along for your little one that you really needed besides diapers, food, tippy cups, stroller etc.
Good luck on your trip and we can't wait until it is our turn to go Western next March:)

I hope someone can answer this. We are planning on cruising with our son, who will be 13 months old at the time of the cruise. I also have a DD that is 11. I want to do some of the excursions, but it appears that almost ALL of them have age restrictions. I'm wondering if that means that you cannot take a toddler/infant along. Anyone know?

Count me in the "confused as to what to do with a little one" camp. My hubby and I will be on our fourth Disney criuse next year, but this is the first time with a baby!

indymom1, We are going to be on the March 29, 2003 Western Cruise too. Katie will turn 10 months on the trip. We will also be traveling with another couple and their daughter that will be 15 months.

Guess we'll all be duking it out for Flounders Reef slots! :)

Hi all I guess misery loves company I just got off the phone with DCL excursion desk.In Key west the baby can do the trolley tour, the western union sail and the glass bottom boat but there is a charge for the baby.
In Grand Cayman the baby can do the beach break,Land and sea Island tour, and the Run Point Beach adventure.
In Cozumel the baby can only do th Beach break.
She said all the other excursions have either snorkeling ortoo much walking and they don't recomend bringing a stroller.

I am still hoping to hear from someone who has done anything on these Islands already.

Our family is going in 2 wks on the Eastern. My 2 girls are 4 & 2 and we plan not on leaving them on the ship while we are on the islands. There were many age limitations to the excursions so what we decided to do was to rent a car and beach/shop/eat at our own leisure. First, taxis get expensive after a while. Secondly, we can come and go as we please and not worry about getting a taxi. Thirdly, we can see more of the island.

For example, we have rented a car for St Maarten for $31 including tax for the day for our trip on 9/7/02. I think that even if the kids were old enough to take the excursions, we probably would do everything on our own to save some money. Grand Cayman looked easy to drive around when we went on a RCL cruise. Cozumel might be a different story though.

Thanks for that info. I really don't want to leave him on the ship in Flounders while we are ashore. How would they handle contacting you if something happens and you are ashore?
Kinda limits you if you have a child under 3 doesn't it?

ACK! I found out tonight that they don't have Cherrios on the ship! *laugh* How terrible is that? :) The staple of the American infant!

Okay, so someone said they did have something LIKE Cherrios! Hehehehe. :)

Man, this "cruising with a baby" thing is a whole new ballgame!

I am packing juice boxes for the 4 yr old and cheerios and goldfish (the big box) for the 2 yr old. You should see the food luggage I have packed already. My 4 yr old keeps on wanting to add more and I have to explain that Mickey will feed her on the ship.

The only thing I have to worry about is the car seat issue with the rentals but I am sure Avis rents them also. I don't feel comfortable leaving the kids on the ship without us. What if something happened to us on the island and we couldn't get back to the ship in time? You don't like to think of that but in Bermuda my father crashed head first into a brick wall on one of those motorbikes. He was okay but he did have to go to the hospital.

shellgoodman,

I'm guessing that I'm gonna be packing half a suitcase full of food as wel. Not sure what yet as my daughter will be 10 months, and since she is the first, I have no idea what they eat at that age. I was all excited that we got two extra suitcases with Katie (I'm an unashamed over packer), but I'm starting to think she'll NEED the room!

The car seat thing is a great big pain. We'll have hers for the airplane, so that will solve the car rental problem, but I am not looking forward to having to lug it around on and off the ship. I wish Airlines rented car seats! I would happily rent one (within a reasonable price, of course) then it wouldn't matter because I know the car rental places do!

We are traveling with my best friend, her husband, and their little girl who will be 15 months then. We don't plan to leave the girls on the ship when we get off either. We will probably just do something like let the guys go off to do a shore excursion at one port while we do stuff with the kidlets, then switch at another port.

Woo Hoo! Can't wait!

We are going on the 9/28 western with ds7, dd4, dd2, and dd18 months. We too were at first a little nervous about how to handle doing any excursions, but we think we have a lot of things figured out after a fair amount of internet investigation--- and lots of help from these boards.

1. In Key West, we do not plan to book anything. We've learned that you can easily board the Conch Train Tour for less money near the port. We expect that our umbrella strollers will be easier to use there because it is a US city, so sidewalks etc. may be more accessible than in other areas. We did the 4 day cruise with a stop in Nassau when our oldest daughter was 10 months old. The stroller didn't work ANYWHERE!!! We wished we'd had a backpack!!

2. In Grand Cayman, we found a place (we think, still checking) that they do horseback riding on the beach. The best we can tell, we would be away from the ship for only 2 hours, top. We are considering doing this with DH desperately hoping I can get over the idea of leaving the kids on the ship. I'm really not sure I can do it. Anyway, whether or not we do that we don't plan to book any Disney excursions. For a family of our size, the prices really add up!!!

We did find out you can do the glassbottom boats, nautilus undersea explorer, etc. on your own close to the port. I also learned you can rent a car quite cheaply there--- ah! A use for the car seats (though tendering with car seats and four kids? Oh my goodness!). If we do this, we can tailor our plans to the kids mood that day--- turtle farm? Seven mile beach? etc.

I also contacted Captain Marvin's. They welcome infants and toddlers on their stingray city excursions. We were going to do this, but dd4 looked at pictures and thought it looked to scary for her. She does get easily overwhelmed, so we tend to believe her when she says that!!

3. In Cozumel--- the day we are most excited about-- we are planning to go to Chakanaab. Myself, dd4 and ds7 will do the Disney excursion for the Dolphin Encounter, using Disney transportation. DH, and DD2 and DD 1 will take a cab to the park and we will meet there. Chakannab is supposed to be a very nice park. It has protected beaches, a jungle to walk through, AND an infant/toddler swimming pool area. There is also a sea lion show and wild bird show. I think entrance to the park is $10 for those 7 and older, free for those who are younger. Also, even though you must be 4yo to do the dolphin encounter, those not participating can stand on the platforms and watch.

I laughed reading the posts about packing food. When we went with DD4 several years ago, we had a HUGE duffle bag that was terribly heavily, jam packed with food!!! Also, she was on formula at that time and could ONLY tolerate Alumentum, which at that time came only in the premixed tall cans. HEAVY!!! It was nice to have the empty back at the end of our vacation to ship all our new finds home in.

The crew made a tremendous fuss over dd, and were so helfpul in the dining rooms. One of the "classic" Disney moments was when the main course came while DH was holding a very animated DD. (We requested late seating, put ds then 3 in the clubs, and then or dd was usually sleeping (we took the stroller with us) before the end of the appetizer). The server offered to cut his meat for him!!! LOL.

I think travelling with an infant on the cruise can be a bit intimidating but it is a blast. This is why we are doing a second cruise. It was fun for the kids, and we got to be pampered and relaxed as well. They didn't have flounders then, and really no babysitting either. But we still had a fantastic time!!!

Hi Jellymoon Your post is very encouraging. Please let me know how it goes on the cruise.
We have been onthe Eastern twice with DDs 6 and 7 and had a great time. However our little delayed souvenir from last Aug will be 6 months on this trip so I am not sure it will be as great.
Have a GREAT Cruise and please let us know how everything worked out.

We are going on the 3 day on Oct. 10 with dd4 and our 8 month old. We were not planning on any shore excursions since both kids are so little.

Does anyone have any input about Castaway Cay regarding infants? I am sure that we can all enjoy it, but since we have never had a small baby at the beach I am sure to forget something essential.

Also, we are totally fine with leaving the 4 year old in the children's activity area, but can anyone comment on experiences with Flounder's Nursery?

We haven't used Flounders because they did not have it before.

Our dd, then 10 months, LOVED our beach day. We played in the shallow water, played in the sand, and had fun swinging in the hammocks.

This time around, as a special "date" with our two toddlers, we are planning to leave the older kids at the Club and take the "little girls" on a bike ride. They rent bikes with the infant seats on the back. We're also planning to take some of our own "toddler friendly" floats to play with in the pool.

Other than that, I recommend a good hat, lots of sunscreen, a water bottle, and a good nap!!! I also noticed, at least on the Western, that Flounders is open for the second half of the day. You might take advantage of that as Castaway Cay is a "closed" environment, and enjoy either some fun time with your older dd (there is a really fun jungle gym in the water at CC), or some quiet time over at Serenity Bay. You could also do some snorkeling or one of the other water type activities. It is easy to get on and off the ship, so probably this will be the easiest place to do it.

They have Fruit Loops. I know this for a fact. My kids ordered this for breakfast (room service) almost every morning.

We just got back from the 3 day cruise. We used flounders nursery for all 3 dinners. We signed up on the first day for all the dinners and got all three. We had late seating for dinner & it was amazing to see how many babies and toddlers were in the dining room climbing all over their parents, etc... The table next two us had 6 kids sitting at their own table. And, about 4 adults at the next table with an infant. The 15 month old was everywhere while ours was in flounder's nursery. We liked it. Also, the nursery gave her a chance to play with other kids and toys without us telling her not to touch something if you know what I mean. The staff was great. We only left our dd in the nursery 2 hours a day. I have no complaints!

As for Castaway Cays, we just hung out on the beach all day. They had tons of umbrellas to hang out under. My dd just played in the sand (we also have a 4 year old dd). As castaway cays you could rent things to do and take turns doing the activity. The beach was very nice. Our 15 month old even took a nap on the beach under the umbrella.

You have tons of fun! Let me know if you have any more questions.

Thanks for the information. We are so excited about the trip.
It is our first time on a cruise, so naturally I am nervous about packing with the baby.

I have heard that the spots in the nursery fill up quickly. Sounds like you had pretty good luck. Hope ours is that good. We are planning to reserve one night at Flounder's so that we can eat at Palo.

Did your 4 yr old like the children's activities? Ours is pretty outgoing so I don't think she will have any issues participating.
