I was a major geek all through school, from kindergarten on up! No pocket protector or anything like that - just really shy, not stylish, not very attractive, way, way down on the school food chain.

My life improved dramatically in college, where a lot of the stereotypes didn't seem to matter as much. I loved the blurring of social lines there - found myself becoming friends with all sorts of people, even jocks and cheerleaders!

Growing up for me meant not caring so much about those kinds of distinctions anymore. I guess maybe you're only a geek if you believe you are.

it seems like in highschool eveyone thinks they have to be a certin way and then when you graduate no one really cares in the real world!

I think 99% of HS kids are geeks and don't realize it. I mean, the girls in the cliques that think they are so cool -- geeks!

Looking back, it's easy to see. The only people who weren't geeks were the people that were true individuals and didn't care what anyone thought of them , and those people were rare. If you were a follower, you were a geek.

I was a follower -- I was a geek.

I prefer to be called a nerd I took all honors classes in school and I was a band geek. Double duty- ouch!

I was a closet geek... I was one of the smartest kids in school but also the leader of the biggest gang in school ... talk about a dichotomy!

My dh was probably the geekiest guy in his class. Yes he had the out of style glasses, pocket protector, polyester pants instead of jeans, carried a briefcase etc. etc. But guess what, now he is probably the most richest and famous geek of his class. He has gone to his class reunions and told me people are amazed at what he does etc. etc. He has a big google list and a great job that lets us go to disney when we want to. I am blessed to be married to a great geek!!

That was me too. I don't think I ever outgrew it either - I'm still pretty much a geek, the only difference is I really don't care anymore!

Let's see:

I wore glasses, was 20 lbs overweight, and had braces. I had no idea what was going on in popular music. I was on the the Literary Magazine committee, in the Drama Club, Math Club, and Honor Society.

I was a pretty big geek. But I got more "cool" as high school went on -- lost some of the weight, got rid of the braces, and got more confident in my own abilities and interests.

I think it helped that I'd always been nice to other kids in different cliques. I got a lot of exposure to people with different interests and outlooks and learned that there wasn't any one way to be "cool".

I'm still a geek. But it doesn't bother me.

For those that were geeks - did it bother you? It did me - I felt like I was a bubbly, popular cheerleader trapped in this unattractive, gawky, shy person's body! Seriously, I hated highschool and now realize that I was very depressed. Like many geeks, though, I've come into my own and am ecstatically happy with my life now, but a part of me mourns what I missed in high school.

I was more on the "conservative" side....but had friends on both sides of the "spectrum". Infact, DH was considered a "burn-out" in highschool (long hair, black leather--that we still have!!! etc)....and we dated since 11th grade.

I was friends with "total geeks" to "total burn-outs".....and to this day, I get along with just about everyone.

No, I wasn't. I was the "new kid" in 4th and 5th grades so I was sort of left out then. But in middle and high school I ran around with the "popular" (I hate that word) kids. I always tried to be nice to everyone, though - I remembered all too well how it felt to be left out and ignored.

Most of my "popular" friends are/were really good people. I am still great friends with the same group of girls today.

I think we are all secret dorks though - we are all hanging out together today (having a girls' weekend) and spent most of the day watching Paula Deen on the Food Network.

My DH was a big geek in HS. He jokes that I wouldn't have given him the time of day back then. I'm sure am glad that your status in HS doesn't really mean anything, because he makes me happier than anything in the world!
