Well Pumps; Why don't they break between 9 am and 5 pm?

And when the sewer bill comes in?

Paying hundreds of dollars a year for the city water plus huge sewer taxes when they come up vs free water.. Not hard to pick which one.

I just got my sewer bill this week--its paid quartly and only is 30.00- not exactly a "hugh" bill :confused3. And I would pay hundreds to have sewers to not deal with a cesspool in my yard- that is just plain disgusting.

I deal with wells for commercial properties. Wells that serve the public must be tested quarterly for E. Coli and Fecal Coliform. They must also be disinfected continuously with either chlorine or ultraviolet light. When was the last time your home well was tested?
Do you have any treatment to kill bacteria? I'll take good old city water any day.

Do people even have "cesspools" anymore? :confused3 I haven't heard that term used since the 50's..

Back in my old neighborhood people either had well water and sewer - or well water and concrete septic systems (a far cry from the old "cesspool" days).. If a concrete septic system is maintained properly, it will last a long, long time.. When I sold my house, mine was 60 years old..

Two years before I moved out, I felt so bad for the young couple living across the street.. They were hooked into the public sewer (the house was only 10 years old), expecting their first child anytime and had just recently done over their entire basement to make it into a large family room, laundry room, and office for the husband.. The sewer backed up inside downstairs and destroyed everything.. The wife had to leave for two weeks (per her doctors orders).. It took several days for the workers to complete the clean-up (wearing those Hazmat-type suits) and most everything had to be chucked..:sad2:

I suppose you can have problems with either type of system, but if I were paying for sewer services (which were quite costly in my neighborhood), I would be fit to be tied if it backed up into my living quarters!!

So - Dawn - do you have water today? :goodvibes

Well, I learned a lot about my well today. I have a true artisian well. It is about 200 ft deep and they had to work quickly because it would have bubbled to the top, so I have lots of water. In fact they suggested that I not only water my own lawn but my neighbors' lawns as well. My water tastes wonderful. We had it tested when we bought the house and haven't felt the need to do it again.

We have water. In our area we could buy a pump every 4 years and come out ahead. We haven't bought one ever. (24 years). Our sewer bill is $245 per year.
