So DH had to renew his license last week and it was a real eye opener I tell you! Did you know that to renew your license in Florida you now have to bring your old license, two pieces of mail that show your current address AND your birth certificate?! None of this info was on the paper they sent to remind us to renew it mind you!! So, we went to renew his license ON his birthday and of course brought just the paper they sent that we needed to renew and his old license since that is how it has worked in the past.

This is when we learned the new "rules". Since we didn't have his birth certificate (we DID have the two pieces of mail in the car since we'd just checked it on the way to town lol) we couldn't renew it that day so we were charged a $15 late fee for having to come back the next day with his birth certificate which we had to go purchase at the health dept for $17 since we couldn't find the copy at home! So not only did the renewal cost $48 (the fee went up from last yrs $25 on 1/1/10 which is insane) we paid $15 late fee and the $17 birth certificate fee for a total of $80 freaking dollars for a stupid license renewal..and we get to pay again this summer if we move to Orlando for the change of address...which costs the same as a renewal lol..

change of address in our state, you just get a sticker for the back of your license for change of address.

Yeah, it was in the new back in Dec about the changes. Really really stupid.

Now if your wallet is stolen, and there's a police report, they waive the fee. I think I had to pay like 5$ for it to be printed out again. Much better than paying 25$. I just went in, no proof of ID at all, and was out in like 5mins. Of course this was last year... I hate the thought of having to change my address once again in a couple months.

Sorry to hear this.. in my state you have to have 6 points of ID. Be glad you don't have to do it that way.

If you are a woman who has gotten married, you have to have old license, certified birth certificate, certified marriage cert, bank statement, settlement papers (or rental cert) , passport, school schedule (if you are student), school ID and worK ID

For this prviledge, we pay about $70 for a 3 year cert.

My sister in law and brother in law moved to CA-- their DMV bill with license fees, registartion and late fee.. was over $800.

Yeah, it's probably the RealID that some states like Florida have now, they have an RFID chip in them, most states have decided not to use RealID for the cost and the privacy concerns, but not Florida

In my state we had to bring our birth certificate it was a one time thing. It's was PIA

Nj also has the 6 points (I think it's still 6- and one has to be a birth certificate and if you are a woman with a different last name you also have to bring your marriage license with a seal!)

Now if I was an illegal alien the state of nj wanted to be able to just hand me a license. Or they at least were talking about doing this until people got up in arms about it.

Yeah, with NY's enhanced drivers license it's a royal pain to get a renewal. I had to bring mail, birth certificate, old license, etc. What are you gonna do, though!?! :confused3

If you are just changing an address in FL the cost is $25 for the license and it can be done online.

Oh I forgot the best part lol..we DIDN'T EVEN GET THE LICENSE! Instead we got a 30 day waiver (piece of printed paper lol) to keep with the old license while they MAIL us the new one lol..no updated pic or anything either for the new license.

I also found out that the yearly registration went up from $35 to almost $70 for the tags..which thankfully aren't due until my birthday in May lol..talk about a markup!!

They didn't update the picture? thats crazy!

Yeah, both tags were updated for 2yrs prior to the rate hike. One was done in march long before I knew about the increase, and I'm glad I choose the two years. The second tag was renewed a week or so before the increase took place.

those fees are for a car, not a drivers license. And the late fee is a large amount of what you must have been told.

CA license renewal are $25 by mail for 3 years this can be done many times before you are required to go in and get a new photo for your id.

They did the license and registration togheter. The cars (not even SUV's) had late fees, licensing fees for not being bought in CA and other stuff.

They were shocked that the total were over $800

Seems like they should put what they need on the renewal form. But no, that way people who go to renew on the day of their birthday, like you did, aren't able to so they can charge all the extra fees and make more money off you. :(

Here in Michigan we pay about $100 per renewal (we paid $300 in September and have a blazer and two trucks), but don't need a birth certificate to do it. In fact, we almost always just renew by mail.

Looks like we have to have SSN (which they will allow you to give verbally, which seems odd), proof of address, and one of the following: passport, birth certificate, cert. of citizenship or naturalization or birth abroad. I guess they don't accept the newly-expiring DL anymore. Guess I'll be sending off to Santa Clara County, CA, for another copy of the birth certificate. :sad2:

The nice thing I just noticed is that if you have a 15-year history of driving in MO, they'll give you what's basically a provisional license (can't be commercial) that's good for a year to allow you to get your documents together. That's cool of them.

Ugh.. I had no idea the rules had changed. It was so easy to renew online before, can't believe we can't do that anymore!

Are you in NJ? It's such a PITA to get it renewed here, almost as bad as kindergarten registration! ;)
