Well, I did it again, but 'the DIS made me do it', honest

Well, again, I am taking all your great DIS advice to heart here and have ordered an upgrade on our DirecTv service, adding TiVo, next week. Replacing the receiver in the family room with a TiVo unit and taking that older one and putting into Vince's room so he'll have satellite there. You guys that have it speak SO highly of it I thought I would give it a try. I don't think I have ever yet been sorry for good advice here on the DIS. Now however, the advice for me to 'go jump in the lake' or 'take a hike' or a 'long walk on a short pier' or 'go play on the expressway', those I have not taken the advice, LOL. :teeth:

Tell me we will like TiVo. Or better, tell Marie she will like it.

PS: And no 'reality' show jokes. :p

Gotta Tivo all the reality shows?

:p
I want Tivo

Just think... you'll NEVER have to miss another reality TV show again. ;)

Honestly, we don't have it yet - but are not big TV watchers either - so couldn't say. Sounds fun though.

Dan, you will love it. Imagine watching the Cubs. Bako hits a homerun. You think "Wow, that doesn't happen much. I'd like to see that again". Press a button and instant replay.

Tell Marie if she is watching her favorite show and she gets a phone call all she has to do is pause, take the call, and then the show picks up right where she left it.

Modern technology is great

You will love Tivo if you watch TV or if you like to watch hard to catch movies

The beauty of Tivo for my mother (who hardly ever watches TV) is that she can record movies that are really really old and never play in regular hours.

Also, you will learn to take your time making popcorn or whatever b/c you can pause ANYTHING anytime!

You can give your favorite shows thumbs up and those you hate thumbs down (reality tv shows :p) and Tivo remember what you like to watch and suggest things you may not have caught on the tv guide.

Tivo is really just one of those convenience gadgets that you swear you don't need, but when you get it you wonder how you ever lived without it! Don't worry Dan, you'll be buying Tivo's for every room in your house soon!

:D

Ack...you beat me to it!!

I'm working on Dave to get TIVO. I'm finally getting the new countertops (TODAY!) that I've wanted FOREVER, but only because he set the old ones on fire (accidentally). Wonder what I can do to get him to give in to the TIVO. Hhhmmm

Tivo is great! It is one of those things that you think you will never need until you get it then you find you could never live without it. Well, maybe you could live but it wouldn't be nearly as good. ;)

Tell Marie she can only take a 1/2 hour call though. It only pauses for 30 minutes and then kicks back in.

You can also schedule it to record things it thinks you may like based on what you watch. It always tapes things for us that we never would have thought to watch but really end up enjoying.

You will love it Dan! We watch so many interesting shows that we never had a chance to see before. DD loves wild animal shows and we can Tivo them for her and go fast thru any, ahem, dinner scenes. :teeth: Good shows like CSI are even better when you can zip thru 5 mins of ads in about 20 secs and it is especially good for old movies. I Tivoed "Cheaper by the Dozen" - orignal version - yesterday for example and can watch it at my leisure (leisire, what's leisure? )

See, you should always listen to the DIS! ;)

Dan, so glad you took the plunge!:teeth: Trust me, you and Marie will both love it.

Honestly, it is one of the best inventions ever!! I don't know what we ever did without it. I watch lots of TV and never miss anything with the Tivo. I chose not to get the integrated DirecTv with Tivo for 2 reasons.

1) We have an HDTV DirecTv receiver and they don't make the integrated Tivo-HDTV receiver YET and when they do I hear it will be like $700.

2) If we ever decide that we don't like DirecTV (which I doubt) then you have to buy another Tivo device.

Enjoy it. It will change the way you watch TV. I almost never eatch anything but sports in real time anymore. Just Tivo and forward through the commercials.

Tivo is the greatest thing ever. I never really watched a lot of tv, but one thing I really like is history channel / discovery channel type specials. Well it's hard to know what they will be showing and when. With Tivo I can search for keywords Egypt or Rome and it will pull up a lot of programs about those civilizations I otherwise might not have found.

It will record them and even if it's only on at 1 am when I'm asleep I can watch it the next day.

Then I don't have to keep it if I don't want to, where with a VCR tape, you have this big tape and the more you rerecord over things on VCR tapes, the worse the quality gets.

I think you will really like Tivo.

TIVO RULES! Being able to record with ease, without tapes, is such a convenience. It's like Christmas every day I come home from work. "What did the TIVO record for me???" :)

Hrrmmm....

SSB was thinking of going to the system that TimeWarner/Brighthouse has, with the built in digital recorder... had not looked at Tivo.

You will have to let us know, Mr. Dan!

We have a Tivo.

Second greatest thing in the ever (next to WDW.)

Tivo will change your TV viewing habits as soon as you get it. You will find that you watch much more TV but in a shorter amount of time. Most 1 hour long shows will now only take you 40 minutes to watch (I assume you will want to fast forward through most commercials). Here is a great tip for you folks with Tivo. I got this from information from www.tivocommunity.com.

You can turn the "Skip To End" button on your remote control into a 30-second skip feature. This will let you skip through a commercial in 30-second intervals each time you press the button. So, for most commercial breaks, just hit the button 4 times (2 minutes) and you are back to watching the show! No more fast forwarding.

To activate this built-in but undocumented feature, do this:

While playing back a recorded program, hit the following buttons on the control.
<SELECT><PLAY><SELECT><3><0><SELECT>

You will hear the TV make a little chiming sound and now you can skip ahead 30 seconds, instantly, anytime you want to.

Oops. Looks like that last post did not like me putting brackets around words. The button sequence to push is:

SELECT PLAY SELECT 3 0 SELECT

After presssing that sequence of buttons the TV will make a little chiming sound and then the 30-second skip feature will be activated.

I love my Tivo! Just last night while I was watching the finale of Enterprise, the phone rang three times! No problem. Just hit "pause", answer the phone, then back to the show.

One warning though. Pay attention the the exclamation points that show up in the "Now Playing" section next to the names of shows you have recorded. They mean that the show will soon be deleted to make more room on the hard drive. I learned the hard way when the Tivo deleted a show that I hadn't had a chance to watch yet.:(

I'm sure you'll like Tivo! Now you'll have plenty of extra time to walk around that beautiful lake of yours!

We don't have Tivo, but we have the PVR receiver with Dish Network and I love it. Being able to pause the TV is great! And being able to rewind and see what you missed or want to replay is great. Although I find myself wanting to do that in the car with the radio.
