Welcome, Foolish Muggles! IoA/US/MK/SW *July 2013 Trip Report Link*

The next morning, I slept in. I stayed in bed until almost 6 am!

Then I went out on the balcony with my book and camera and coffee and watched the sun come up.

Looks like it is going to be a beautiful day!

We ate breakfast at Las Brisas breakfast buffet ($24 per person). Fortunately, breakfast was included in our package, so the cost was covered except for the tip.

We met up with our tour group in the front entrance way of El Con. Here are a few pictures from there. You can see the tops of the peaks in the distance today. A lot of the time, they are covered in clouds.

The ride in the van was probably 40-45 minutes. When we neared the rainforest our tour guide who told us to call him “Tour Guide” because we would never remember his name (Edwin) gave us some background facts. He had an interesting and really amusing way of presenting information. Much like Jeopardy, his phrasing was in the form of a question.

“Tour Guide, what is the most popular fruit in the world?” (I’ll reveal in the next installment, feel free to make a guess)

“Tour Guide, where does the water in the rainforest come from?”

“Tour Guide, is it going to rain in the rainforest today”

He asked this as we were approaching a meadow and a river. He said:

“Tour Guide doesn’t know if it is going to rain. But to make a guess, I watch the cows”
He pointed to the field, where there were a couple of cows.

One of the others on the bus asked “What do you predict?”

Tour Guide said “I don’t know, the sample size was too small -insufficient data”

How many cows does it take to make a prediction?

Tour Guide said “It isn’t actually about the number, but the behavior of the cows” . You need to see how many are standing up or if they are down, if they are close to the river, etc.

Our first stop was at a waterfall.

Next up: Tour Guide, Where does the Water in the Rainforest Come From?

Those are some beautiful sunrise pictures. I can see why you went outside to watch the sun up.

I think I'm going to make a guess that the most popular fruit is a banana. Oooh oooh! I think I know the answer to the cow question but I'm not sure. My uncle used to raise hows and he would predict the weather by how they were acting too.

I can already tell from just the sampling of pictures that you posted so far, that I'm going to love the rest of your rainforest tour.

Loving your pics as always Dee:)
Sunrise looks so beautiful!
Guessing the fruit is a banana and that its going to rain if the cows are sitting down in a group:rotfl2:

Your sunrise pics are beautiful---The sun looks huge coming up!

Can't wait to see the rest of your rainforest pictures!

Even though I don't like them, I'm guessing the banana too!

Gorgeous pictures!
For some reason I remember reading that Mango is the most popular fruit in the world but I'm not sure if that's correct.

Amanda

Not sure about most popular fruit- I thought banana too.
When cows are laying down it's gonna rain.
Waking up late- 6 am :rotfl:
Those pics are absolutely beautiful.

Congratulations, Amanda!

"Hey Tour Guide, What is the Most Popular Fruit in the World?

When he asked this, I confidently yelled out "Mango!" Like Amanda, I had read this somewhere. Mark looked at me like I was crazy, and was shocked a few minutes later when Tour Guide confirmed my guess.

The Most Popular Fruit in the World
Jim Scherrer - PVNN

It's probably safe to say, that when asked which fruit is the most popular fruit in the world, the majority of Americans and Canadians would respond with apples or bananas. That response would be normal, but far from accurate.

To the astonishment of most North Americans, mangoes are consumed worldwide by a factor of three to one over bananas and ten to one over apples. Although mangoes are still considered to be exotic fruits in America, ranking as number 24 of the top 25 fruits consumed in the US, they are considered to be staples in India, South Asia, China, and Latin America; often being referred to as "the king of the fruits". Evidently, those in the many far corners of the world have learned something that has yet to be discovered in North America!

OK folks, if you enjoyed that one...

What is the most common bird in the world?

.

Off to help out at the PTA Science Fair this morning, then Ben has a performance of Bye Bye Birdie tonight, so I won't have much time to check in today.

Everyone have a super day!

Thanks for the comments about the pictures. I still have a few more, but the tower was really the highlight.

BTW- those pictures are taken with the Olympus Tough!

Thanks! The few cows we saw were standing... It was a gorgeous day!

Thanks. I'm a morning person, so I am almost always up to see the sunrise. I LOVE seeing it in a place like this!

Another vote for the banana - my family certainly eats a lot of them!

Your family will have to eat a few more to catch up to the mango!

Great guess, Amanda!!!

Banana wrong. Cows right.

Yup, I am usually up and at 'em by 5 every morning, weekends, holidays, vacations, whatever.

Thanks for your kind words about the photos!

Glad my memory was correct! :lmao:
I have no idea about the bird though...

Amanda

Once again, excellent job on the answer.

My brother runs a trivia company, and he stumped me with the bird question. When I heard the answer, I thought, DUH!!!

No idea about the bird.
Good Luck to Ben tonight- how exciting!!!

Deb :)

Thanks, Deb!

The shows this weekend were awesome! Ben has been in 8 community theatre performances and this was the first time he sings in a show, he has a couple of solos during the song "Kids!". My husband got to see him in this show for the first time on Saturday- we are very proud of how well he is doing!

Last week was CRAZY!!! Rehearsals every night, 3 shows, Science Fair... This week is catch-up week. I'll try to write another installment about our trip, the second part of the rainforest tour, tomorrow.

Before I post the next update, I'll give you the answer to the most popular/common bird in the world:

The chicken!

After leaving the tower, Tour Guide started to tell us a story about the connections between the Fountain of Youth and Puerto Rico. Ponce de Leon, who is the figure most associated with tales of the legendary fountain, was the first Governor of Puerto Rico. Tour Guide explained that his exposure to the legend began in this very rainforest. He went on to tell us that Johnny Depp researched part of his latest Pirates of the Caribbean role by visiting here and that Tour Guide has seen him many times and met him once.

I didn’t know whether to believe him, you can be the judge:

Thanks to Marlton Mom for her addition to the photo, In the Depps of the Forest

He asked if we wanted to see the fountain, but cautioned that we had to be very careful on the trail. We had signed up for the light to moderate hike and if any of us were injured on this trail, Tour Guide would be in big trouble back at the hotel since we were supposed to be on the “baby tour”.

The trail was a little rocky and you had to be careful of tree roots, but it was totally worth the effort:

While we were here, Tour Guide plucked 4 rocks out of the stream and rubbed them on a rock to create paint. He then told a story about the song of the Coqui frog, one of the symbols of Puerto Rico, as he painted on his arm.

The final part of the tour was a hike past a man-made pool (Tour Guide said this was one of the very first spas) to a trail through the woods.

“Tour Guide, are there any animals in the rainforest”

Tour Guide told us that if we relaxed we would be able to see the invisible animals of the rainforest. As we walked, he found about a dozen walking-stick insects and some extremely well camouflaged green, brown and yellow snails.

That was beautiful. Sounds like it was fun. As soon as you wrote Ponce deLeon and fountain of youth- I thought PoTC!!! I knew that name sounded familiar:thumbsup2

Great pics and must have been so peaceful. Love the "animal" shots! Sounds like your tour guide really did the extra to make the tour fun.

I love all the rainforest pictures, everything looks so lush and beautiful! What a neat experience.

How did Ben's play go? Do we get to see some Bye Bye Birdie pictures?

Sorry I've been so MIA lately, the NCAA tournament has held me hostage at my office for 10, 11 hours each day. Luckily, we're down to three games and my life should return to normal.

What a great update! I would have done just as you did and climbed the rocks to get a better look. Aren't those walking sticks the coolest things ever? We have those here in Louisiana and they always make me think of A Bug's Life.

Yes, it was a wonderful, beautiful tour. I loved all of the information we were given!

We really, really liked Tour Guide. We tipped him well and we also complimented him to the person who sells the tours at the hotel. She told us he gets lots of praise.

:welcome: Missy!

The rainforest tour was fantastic and we couldn't have asked for better weather. Due to the nature of this climate, I think it is often very cloudy so we were very lucky with the conditions and the views we had that day.

Last weekend's shows were great. We have 3 more coming up- Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I'll see what I can do about getting some pictures. I need to try out my new camera- I decided to try out a Panasonic Lumix waterproof to go along with my Olympus.

Good luck with the rest of the tournament.

I love those walking sticks! They are quite the masters of disguise and I was so impressed that Tour Guide was able to find so many of them.

I didn't post the picture, but I took one of the walking stick in the leaves, but now I can't pick it out!

Cant believe I didnt get the bird question:lmao::rotfl2:
Loving all the photos (espsecially Marlton Moms wee addition:rotfl:)
Let us know your verdict on the camera (since Santa obviously dropped mine from his sack at Christmas). I am going to treat myself to an early birthday present this summer;) I've never had a waterproof camera before but love the idea:thumbsup2
