Weird situation at a gas station last night

My DH filled up our gas tank last night, about 8 gallons. DH went in to pay - it was around $20.

We were in the same "row" as someone filling up a Lincoln Navigator.

The Navigator people went in before us ( as they had finished filling up before DH.) The Navigator people "paid" for our gas, but didn't pay for their own gas.

So - the clerks at the gas station just thought the easiest thing for dH to do was to pay the $45 charge that the Navigator people didn't pay.

UMM - NO...Don't think so! DH was in the store for 15 minutes or so until the situation was handled.

How in heck does that happen? Clerks fault for bringing up the wrong pump and navigater people trying to get away with paying 20$ instead of their $45 fillup. What nerve of the clerk to expect your dh to pay for twice the amount of gas you didn't get! The clerk should have paid the difference.

I had a similar situation happen to me. The guy on the other side of the pump went in to pre-pay for his fuel, but told the clerk the wrong pump number (mine). I put in my credit card at the pump without really paying attention to the screen. I looked up and it said "begin fueling" so I did. After I pumped $13 worth, it shut off. I was confused because my tank was nearly empty. While I was pumping, the guy came back out and was telling his wife he put the money on the wrong pump. He had no clue how to straighten it out. I had to go in and explain it to the clerk, who was equally clueless.

the navigator's owners might get a visit from local law enforcement.

years ago a friend went to a gas station and the pump was messed up-it filled a couple of gallons into his motorcycle but while the pump kept registering more gas/more money the gas did'nt come out. friend walked inside told the clerk and only paid the clerk for what he knew he had gotten.

the next day friend has police show up at his door-gas station owner filed a theft report. friend explains situation to the police-and then asks (mostly out of curiosity since clerk never came out) how they knew it was him. police explain that security cameras record the license plates. police were going to have to pursue the matter BUT luckily friend had'nt cleaned out his jacket pockets yet and he still had the accumulated junk in them from the night before. he asks the police how much gas and at what time he supposedly stole it-police tell him, and he pulls out of his jacket pocket the receipt from the second gas station he went to 5 minutes later where had he stolen the amount the other station had claimed, he could'nt have put the amount he subsequently purchased into his motorcycle's tank

police dismissed the charges and thanked him for clearing up the matter-also told him that he'd be surprised at how many of these types of reports they routinely had to deal with and it was great to have one that was dealt with so easily.

15 gallons-$9.00 later pump clicked off and I went to collect. The guy tells me he told me $5.00 and he was not going to pay the extra $4.00. I told the station owner, he came out and spoke to the guy who continued to refuse to pay so up on the lift the car went and $4.00 worth of gas was syphoned out of his tank. He paid the $5.00 bucks and squealed the tires as he drove off.

We had a really good laugh.

DH wanted me to get one of the clerks to come outside and take a look at the pump, something wasn't right, he hadn't even started pumping gas yet. The clerk refused to look at the pump, so I asked her to please reset it to $0. She refused, saying "there's $.10 worth of gas laying in the hose." Whatever!!!!! DH comes in, angry now, saying that he is going to report them and asked for his money back. Mind you, we never did pump any gas. DH walks out of the station, I stay to collect the $20. The clerk pulls out of the cash register a 10, 5, and as she started to pull out 4 one dollar bills I realize she is going to charge us for the $.10 of gas that we never pumped!!! I said, "oh no, you had better give us our $20 back." After all, that's what we handed them, a $20 bill. She huffed and handed us our $20 back.

Long story short, I called the MD Dept of Weights and Measures, they came out to inspect the pumps, and not only did that pump have "pump jump"(illegal!!!), but the majority of the pumps, approx 16 of them, were off, shorting the customer!!! So most of this stations pumps were shut down for probably close to 2 weeks until they could get everyone of them working correctly. The whole time the Dept of Weights and Measures kept in touch with me letting me know how things were progressing.

I don't think I would have thought anything about a dime. I guess it was good your stood your ground.

OP, sorry that happened. I can't believe the Lincoln Navigator didn't notice...did he just think he was getting lucky and not stealing gas???

Wow. Good for you guys. It's the principle. If I hadn't even pumped the gas at all, I wouldn't pay for anything either! That's nuts!! Zero bought, zero paid. And for her to insist you pay it, that would've made me madder about it.

So did they have to pay a fine for the "pump jump"? I hope so.

besides all the money you prevented the place from ripping off from other customers you may have saved individual customers hundreds and hundreds of dollars in unnecssary diagnotic tests on their cars-if a person used the place on a regular basis and was presuming when they filled up they were actualy filling up, they could have thought their car had engine problems due to it not getting the appropriate mileage for a 'full' tank.

i'de hate to think of the number of people that could have relied on their trip meter vs. their gas guage for fill ups, and may have ended up running out of gas and stranded based on being shorted fuel

I had to deal with a gas station error myself once. I was traveling through Texas and stopped at a tiny little gas station in some small town. Their automated payment system was down and they used the old paper slider thingie. (I haven't seen one of those in ages!) My charge was about $25 but when I received my bill it showed $250! I wrote the gas company and said that my car couldn't hold $250 if I filled the inside and trunk. I couldn't find the stupid receipt.

A shout out to Shell for changing it quickly and quietly.

I had that happen to me too. The pump registered 25 cents before pumping. I put the nozzle back and tell the attendant what happened and will not pay the quarter and left. I left and a block down I see the blue lights coming after me. I did a u-turn asked the cop if he was after me. Yes. Went back to the station and while discussing it the officer partner comes in after checking pumps. They figured out what was going on and told me to leave. As I was leaving they were all over the attendant.

What they didn't know was I worked in the corporate office of the competitor. When I got to work the next day a few phone calls were made to their corporate office. THEY canceled the lease and pressed charges against the leasee. Like us, the other oil company wasn't about to get into legal trouble.

We've been lucky and not had anything like this happen but did have one odd situation. We were on our way home after a baseball tournament and stopped to get gas. When we pulled in, hubby found the nozzle on the ground. He picked it up and put in the holder/slot. He had to go inside and talk with the clerks about what had happened. It seems who ever was there before us got their gas and left that on the ground. Something tells me it alerts them when the nozzle is back in the holder on the pump.
