Weightloss without exercise?

For the people having a problem with the vitamins, try taking them right before you go to bed. I had the same problem with prenatal vitamins and that's what the doctor recommended I do.

Good luck to all of you in your weight loss quests. I'm on one too. :thumbsup2

A healthy lifestyle is 80% diet IMHO. Eating right is the best start. If possible you want to burn at least an extra 300 calories per day (It'll help boost your metabolism too). Doesn't have to be 'exercise'. Do more yard/house work. Take the pets for a stroll. Get freaky with the spouse more :teeth:.

Just remember to stick to the diet. After a while it'll become 2nd nature. It's getting through that initial stage that makes even me go PMS.

How do you know when you´ve burnt 300 calories?

If you're only concerned with weighing less, then you can achieve that with just diet. But changing your body composition and becoming fit and healthy requires regular exercise. There is no way around it.

I totally agree. Also - it is difficult to MAINTAIN the weight you have lost without exercising, especially as you get older.

Maybe you can find some type of exercise that you really like to do? Something fun - so it isn't so much "work." Good luck.

I so agree with this. I donot understand the point of losing weight and not caring about being healthy. So you just want to look good? :confused3 Seriously, this is where body image issues come from. The focus should be on becoming healthier, not just skinnier. :)

I lost over 50 pounds and have maintened by weight for 10 years through diet and exercise (cardio and strength training). It all needs to work together.

I have a good friend who lost 80 pounds on Weight Watchers without doing any exercise. She has a bad back and really can't do anything. BTW - She is 60 years old.

She never went to one meeting or on-line. She got the info from her sister and followed the program about five days out of seven. She lost 80 pounds and her husband lost 50. She's kept it off for two years now.

I on the other hand, followed WW to the letter and gained 3.5 pounds the first week:rotfl:

I do care about being healthy. I can´t see how I should have given the impression that I don´t.

I am pretty healthy. Don´t have any health problems I can think of to be honest. I walk the dog every other day, take the stairs if I´m only going up 1 or 2 floors etc. I just meant that I didn´t want to go to the gym.

But since you asked, I do want to look good ;)

I used to belong to a gym, but quit a couple of months ago. We bought a bowflex, which I LOVE. Strength training was a always a chore for me, I didn't like it but knew I had to do it. Now I look forward to it.

For cardio, I walk, sometimes throw in some jogging, brak out a DVD now and then, and I still seem to be doing okay. All it really takes is 30 minutes a day, not much really!!! Sometimes I do more more just because I am enjoying myself. :thumbsup2

Just some general remarks:

- When you take vitamins before going to sleep, it can cause bad night rest and nightmares. It's better to take them in the morning.
- When you drink a lot of water, you'll eat less because your stomach is full, and loose more weight. However, if you drink too much water, you're flushing all the essential vitamins and minerals out of your body.

I never take the elevator at work. I park my car at -2, and work on the 3rd floor. I am always loaded with purse, bag with food + bottled water, laptop-bag and all kinds of files. Yes, I always look like a mule  It's a good and cheap exercise!
I also park my car far away from the stairs in the parking. First of all, it's easier to park (everyone else is cramming in front of the door) and it's more exercise!

I lost 57lbs 5 years ago on Weight Watchers without a lick of exercise. The problem is...I have gained it all back and more. Now I am back on WW and exercising a bit more than none! I hate exercising, I don't know why, but I do. I know it is good for me, but I just can't get motivated.
So...Yes it can be done, but your chances of gaining it back are really high.
Good luck to us all who are struggling with the life-long ordeal!!!

There could be a few people coming from different weights when it comes to exercise. Remember, most machines you buys for exercise (treadmill, elliptical, etc) have a weight limit for people who weigh under 250 pounds. So what about the people who weigh OVER 250 pounds and want to lose weight?

I suspect part of the secret is to lose the weight until you get to 250 pounds, then add those machines in. Speaking from experience, when you start to lose weight you almost crave moving your body more. It seems to be a natural thing. You feel lighter and get antsy - so you walk. Around the neighborhood, around the store, around the mall, etc. Ask anyone who puts down a 30 pound bag of kitty litter how they feel and they'll probably tell you it feels good to not be carrying around that 30 pound bag.

So imagine how good it'll feel to put down those two 40 pound bags of salt you've been carrying around all these years? :goodvibes You'll WANT to exercise just for the uniqueness of moving around without the weight.

Getting back to the OP, weight loss w/o exercise: I'm currently trying increasing my intake of vitamin B complex vitamins (and more water). So far I've lost five pounds, which could be water weight. We'll see how it works out as the weeks go on. I've only been doing this since Saturday and it's now Wednesday.

Five pounds in five days? I'll take it. :thumbsup2

I can understanding hating cardio because it can get plain old boring. I do it because it works. I love the way I feel AFTER. I also love to eat donuts!

But I would throw in some crunches and freeweights just to keep yourself toned. Grab a pair of 8lb dumbbells at Walmart or something. You need to do very little of this to keep your arms and back toned. I did too much for a while and got man-muscels and gained lbs! oops.

Oh and if you like walking and if you can manage it...try to walk first thing in the morning. It's hard, I know it's cold outside (that burns even more calories), but something about walking before you do or eat anything is like the magic spell for weight loss. When my schedule allowed it, I would do an early, quick walk - like 15 min - and pounds fell off. I don't understand it.

Good luck.

That's definitely water weight, since 5 lbs = 17,500 calories, way more than a typical person would eat or not eat in 5 days. Don't be alarmed or disappointed if some or all of it comes back.

I lost 30 pounds while on Weight Watchers, my only exercise was walking the dog for about 30 minutes a day (15 in the morning and 15 at night). But I had no choice, I lived in a condo so the dog HAD to be walked, so I didn't really consider it excersise, although it was. I think Weight Watchers was the main reason I lost weight, the walking just helped it along a bit. If you want more info on Weight Watchers, feel free to PM me.

Freyja,

I once had a fitness coach explain weight loss this way: any drastic changes you make to lose weight will only be temporary. If you intend to lose weight and keep it off, you must make small, incremental lifestyle changes. Otherwise, your body will fight back and you will resort to your old ways of living.

Also, our desire to lose large amounts of weight quickly virtually guarantees failure. If instead of wanting to lose a pound a day we would accept losing maybe 2 pounds a month, our chances of success would be much greater. At that rate, the changes that you choose to make would be much less drastic and therefore much more acceptable and sustainable. For example, my 2 pounds per month example would mean burning or avoiding an extra 233 calories per day, everyday. That's less than 2 soft drinks. That's how many calories are in a Guinness beer. Or that's a rather modest increase in physical activity.

In any case, at the end of 1 year, you'd be 24 pounds lighter, 48 after 2. Probably about the same rate you gained the weight.

Freyja,

I'm sorry to post again, but I want to add a couple of points about physical activity. May I suggest that you do some research on the subject? There's a ton of information on the benefits of physical activity vs. the risks of inactivity. The importance of cardio-vascular fitness is obvious. Other less obvious benefits would include controlling/preventing diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, heart disease, etc., etc., etc.

I used to hate to exercise. That is because exercise today has become a mundane, painful and too-often indoor activity. Every year I would resolve to run/jog. I would be forced to abandon my plan after a few weeks of joint and foot pain. This went on for years. Then I bought a bike. It's like it's not exercise. It's fun, outside, and mentally stimulating. It's about as far from running on a tread mill as I can imagine. I've been riding consistently for the last 14 months, which doesn't sound like much, but it's about 28 times longer than I've ever stuck with an activity. It's something I look forward to. I want to leave work to ride. And I've lost 20 pounds that I've not regained at all, and 4 inches.

Good luck to you. I hope you can find an activity you can enjoy.

After DS I needed to lose the baby weight. I changed my diet and started doing Walk Away the Pounds 3x/week at my house. I bought he video that has 3 workouts on it (1,2, and 3 mile). I am now 5lbs. lighter than I was when I got PG, but still could lose another 5, but not seating it.

WATP is simple, simple movements and the 1 mile is only 20 minutes long. They also use some 2lb. weights and my arms got some nice muscle tone just from using those.

Yes, I think that you can lose the weight without exercising. If you cut your caloric intake, you will lose weight. Exercise will just make it happen faster.

I absolutely hate exercising. Hate it! I haven't found one thing that I like to do. I don't like being outside at all and I don't like going to the gym. So, I try to do workout tapes at home a couple of times a week. I never find that exercising makes me feel better or gives me more energy though. :confused3 It is just pure drudgery. :sad2:
