Two tips that I have found work for me:
1) If I'm at the dinner table and find I've finished my main part of my meal and have fries left over (or even half of my burger or entree), I always pick at them and end up finishing them while having dinner conversation. If it's in front of me, I'll eat it. So when I reach my "I really shouldn't eat any more or I'm going to regret it" alert in my head, I pour some of my water glass onto my plate, completely ruining the fries, or what ever's left. My friend saw me do this and thought I was NUTS!!! But it worked. I didn't touch the soggy fries, and the waitress still took another 20 minutes before she came to our table to remove our plates. Had I not done that, I would have finished them. You don't have to pour water in your plate if you don't want to, but how about covering your plate with a used napkin? Out of sight, out of mind.
Another tip:
2) Whatever is on your plate, whether from a reastaurant or what I put on my plate at a buffet, immediately cut it all in half and ask for a box, or cover it up. I am notorious for grabbing (and eating!) oversized portions. With this tip, I am already reducing my calorie intake by half.
Also, as another person already mentioned, tiny plates equal tiny meals. Try to use small plates. The same size of food on a bigger plate will make you want to add more and fill the plate. Small plates force you to take less.
Good luck! I lost 16 pounds with Weight Watchers a few years ago. Try to eat an equal amount of fresh veggies or fruits as you eat meals/entrees. You'll fill up QUICKLY!
