weight restrictions on segway tour

Hello! Question to those who have done the Around the World Segway Tour. I just booked it for an upcoming trip and didn't know there was a minimum weight restriction until the CM told me. I knew about the max. weight of 250 pounds, but had no idea that there was a min. weight of 100 pounds.

So this is tricky....though an adult, my sister has always been short and on the smaller side (...glad she's not reading this or she'll be slapping me right now.... :rotfl2: ) but she's about 98 pounds. so she's on the borderline. I asked the CM if 98 pounds is good and the CM said that it's strictly 100 pounds min. weight. And of course, they have final say on the day of your tour and there's no refund and yada yada yada.....

So I'm torn now. I was thinking of just canceling rather than risk it that morning and then losing out on the money and experience for both of us. She's at the borderline weight and there's no way I'm going to tell her to get fat just for segway tour. :furious:

Anyone know how strict this min. weight restriction is enforced on the segway tour? Do they weigh you before you start or something?

unless they weigh you when you get their, which i feel might be a big pc issue for disney i dont' think you will have a problem.

The problem is if she doesn't weigh enough she may not be able to use / manouver on the Segway.

It's not them being mean or picky, it's a matter of use and safety.

True. And I totally understand disney's position. Guess that's why I'm not sure if I should just cancel the tour. I wouldn't want to pay for the activity if it's going to be a disappointment. But at the same time, it'll be neat if we can do it. Never used a segway before so I don't know how sensitive it is to a few pounds less. She's a little over 5 feet tall.

I seriously doubt that they will be weighing her. They may ask her how much she weighs. Just have her say 102. What's a couple of pounds between friends. We took the segway tour and they are not difficult to maneuver. You spend the first part of the tour in a building in EPCOT going around cones. It's a great tour and a lot of fun. Plus you get a cool pin after the tour. DW loved that since she is a pin collector. :cool1:

I understand Epcot's concern with Safety; however, having been around Segways a lot thanks to FIRST robotics (the founder of that invented the Segway) and I dated a guy that owned one (nothing's better than seeing a drunk person fall down the stairs on a segway). I have seen people from about 75 pounds up to 320 pounds use a segway, even with the special high speed keys. Granted it moved a lot faster with the 75 pound person than it did with the 320 pound person, but it worked.

ABSOLUTELY!! Heaven knows I've rounded down a few pounds on more than one occassion (maybe because I don't want to admit to myself how much I really weigh :rotfl2: ). Without a scale, who is to know.

If she weighed 80 pounds and Disney's restrictions were 100, I would say not to do it. But for a 5 pound or less difference - I'd just say "102" like NJDad18 suggested.

Yep say 102 and put a roll of quarters or two in her pockets just in case ;)

Get the dining plan and book the segway for the end of the week. (Desert is included in the DP :)

When I did the Segway tour last month, they were not weighing anyone, big or small, and there were all sizes in our group of 10. I will say that the one lady who was the smallest had the most trouble riding her Segway. It seemed that she just didn't weigh enough to make her Segway go without alot of effort on her part.

:rotfl2: Thats real funny your asking a lady to lie UP her weight :lmao:

What do you want her to give the correct age as well :rotfl:

Anyhow a few pounds could also be a fannyyback with some items in it .I'm NOT saying feed her lead or fill her shoes but 2 pounds in a fanny pac would give her some more center of balance.

Exactly the problem!!
I'd say have your friend take the tour. The first hour is just practice and she can drop out after that if she doesn't feel comfortable or is unable to get her Segway to move properly.

We've seen people fall off their Segways and I've also seen some people riding them who seemed very uncomfortable and nervous. They didn't seem like they enjoyed their experience very much and I wish the guide had encouraged them to drop out mid-way through the class.

Segways aren't for everyone especially if you can't get past the nervousness. I'd say give it a try though if it's just a slight matter of a few pounds!

i must've missed something on this one. i will be doing the disney dining plan, but there's a relationship between the dining plan and the segway tour? i thought the segway tour comes with no food?!?!? :confused3

It was a joke I think, fatten up the sister before the ride, the dining plan might help with that. Then again, walking around the parks often helps burn the excess calories eaten with the dining plan so it could be a wash. Stick with the quarters ;)

When I was looking at the tours on Disney website, it only said under 250 pounds, nothing about over 100, just curious as to where you heard that. But it does sound like fun.

when i called to make the reservation, the castmember read me the standard information that goes along with the tour. it was then she mentioned the minimum and maximum weight limits for the segway device. i too knew of the 250 pound max. limit, but never heard about the 100 pound min. limit. so that's when i inquired about it. the castmember said that the weight limits are strictly enforced for the guests' safety.
