Weight loss surgery - does anyone REALLY need it?

I agree, if all else fails and the person's health is at serious risk, maybe it's time for medical intervention but people do need to know it's not a be all and end all. People do need to learn how to eat healthy. There is a psychological aspect of why they got that way in the beginning.

I've actually been shocked to read deluxe dining reports on the DiS by people who have had the surgery. I've also seen first hand how the surgery can help and how in one case the surgery did nothing to stop the food addiction.

Absolutely. The Lapband seems different because a person MUST make good choices.

I can't imagine the deluxe dining plan and eating big rich meals everyday for the life of me. Frankly id be sick.

If you want to stage a food addiction intervention, go for it. From what I can see, there are plenty of resources on the Internet.

I'm not sure why you'd bring it up on a thread where people are discussing the pros and cons of bariatric surgery. I think the more knowledgeable contributors in this thread (i.e., the ones who have had surgery) have already ascertained that their weight is negatively effecting their health.

I am commenting on specific threads. What is your point?

No not true on good choices that is more with GBP. Lapband requires you to fill a resevoir to keep the stomach small. If you simply stop doing that it will return to normal. Also with LB you can eat any foods there is no body rejection like with GBP.

You could have a milkshake or BK or Ben & Jerrys with LB with GBP I would be, lets say indisposed for quite some time. After which I would feel like a had gone 10 rounds with Tyson, it exhaust you.

When we did WDW about 3 months post GBP I was allowed to order from kids menu or 1/2 portions. I actually had a chef come out to chat with me, his wife was thinking of doing it.

Both are choices and what works for one may not work for another. I do know LB people who have ended up going back for GBP because they need that jolt.

Can someone please explain why when it comes to food addictions everyone is supposed to tread delicately and politically correctly and beat around the bush BUT if you are addicted to alcohol, drugs, bulimia, gambling, sex, tobacco, video games, etc. it's time for a serious intervention?

Why is food addiction treated differently when it is just as disabling?

You can't figure that out? You think it's polite and PC to insult people? I don't have one but I'm sure those with the addiction don't need to be told that they have one because they already know.

Tread delicately vs being outright rude? There has to be a middle spot in there somewhere. :goodvibes

I've never understood this argument. An alcoholic doesn't need alcohol. Period. Everyone needs food, but nobody needs garbage foods. Eat whole foods and nothing more. You will be healthy, thin and live longer.

How about sex addiction? Tiger Woods? boo hoo.

More excuses.

I know families who have only eaten whole foods who are morbidly obese. As I'm always saying to the teens I work with, very little of life is black and white. With my thyroid issues my maintenance daily caloric allowance is 1050. That is the number many dieters strive for and lose wonderfully with. I gotta say, it truly sucks some days. I totally get why people can't or won't do it long term. And that is without the other food issues that make it difficult.

Addictions stink regardless. Tigers sex addiction ruined his life. I'm terribly grateful that I don't have that issue, because at a certain point even the fun stuff isn't fun when it is more about hiding and lying.

Exactly the point, you can't understand and I am thinking you don't want to. As I say on political boards - If nothing I say will change your mind then we keep speaking to me.

I am sure you have noticed eating whole & healthy is expensive that is why those on assistance tend to be heavy. They eat more processed cheap foods. 10 boxes of Mac & cheese for $10 feeds more than fresh veg, meat tc so some don't have that luxury.

:rotfl2: WAY easier said than done.

BTW, I agree about Tiger, that's not an addiction, it's lack of gonad control and a highly superior ego.

As I said my friend had to learn to make good choices with the Lapband to get the loss she wanted. She couldn't count on her body to rid itself of her bad choices. We had another friend who had gbp who passed. Lapband or nothing were he choices she was willing to make.

Addiction is addiction which is lack of control and all addictions need to be addressed. Directly and with respect.

I know many who had LB and were very successful. I wish anyone all the success in the world. I guess that was my point each has to make the right choice.

I had a very good friend, former DISer who passed after GBP. Unfortunately I learned alot more after her death than she told here. Multiple health troubles she omitted to come clean on. You have to have honesty & an very ethical program, GBP is very hard on the body.

Well, I have no thyroid whatsoever so I do understand and if you ever want to know how I changed my diet for the better, pm me.

I'm good. We live by an 80/20 plan. :) primarily whole food, semi vegetarian. But without rigidity (at least for them!). I would love sometimes to throw caution to the wind and drink a milkshakes sometimes though! Thank you though!

No where did I say it's ok to insult someone or be rude.

You asked about treading lightly about certain subjects. To NOT tread lightly suggests you think it's okay to speak about it no matter who hears it.

Listen, I can be as rude and nasty as the next person, it's the Bklyn in me, but there is something I've learned in my old age and it's called tact. This subject matter includes people who have been thru struggles. You want to not tread lightly, go right ahead. No rules broken. You asked why it's okay to tiptoe about this subject and I answered it.

I still don't understand how obesity is the one and only subject on the DIS that people should tread lightly on. Can you only give advice to a drug addict if you've been one yourself? Alcohol? Food?

I certainly wasn't rude on this thread nor did I see any other rudeness.

What does coming from Brooklyn have to do with being rude or nasty? There are rude, nasty people on every corner of the globe.

I grew up in Brooklyn, it's known for being edgy. I moved to the South and found out it is NOT the way to be. Southerners are very genteel, I've had to learn how to be that way.

If you lived in the US you wouldn't ask me that question. :rotfl2:

BTW, obesity is the one and only physical state that people don't mind picking on people about. NJ Governor Christie gets picked on ridiculously about his weight, if he had any other malady it would be different.

I don't live in the US but I've been to most of the country many times over. In fact, New Yorkers treat us wonderfully, everywhere we go. Love NYC.

I don't think anyone should be picked on regarding their weight. Ever. I just think people should be able to receive advice from "outsiders" without being offended.

Really? If he were a smoker? Sex addict or addicted to prescription drugs? I'm not thinking so!
