Weight loss for Wishers and becoming Leaner Meaners!

Hey Cindy! Forgot to wish you good luck on your 10K this weekend! :)

Cindy: Great news about having a couple of days of good eating. That's how a pattern is established, right, a couple of good days in a row. I find April to be a hard month for me as well. My birthday is also in April, as is DOOD's. And then there's (often) Easter. Sorry your birthday dinner ended up making you feel gross, but hope that it tasted good and that it helps you recommit. And I hope you had a happy birthday! :flower3:

And good luck on your race this weekend. You've got a strong, strong base so I'm sure you'll do well, even though it's been a hectic couple of weeks for you. But that 80 degree weather. :scared1: What a big jump! Do take it easy, just because of the heat.

And you, competitive? :rolleyes1 Nawwww..... :lmao: Just go out there and rock that race! :woohoo:

Beth: Isn't it amazing the messages we receive about nutrition through the media, etc. Very seldom is the message about balance. Starve or stuff yourself, right? So of course it makes sense to the BL contestants, worried about weight loss, to try and cut down on portion sizes and to take it to extremes. There's just so much cultural programming out there to see things as a diet, a quick fix, instead of a lifestyle change. And with the BL, on tv and in a highly artificial environment..... I'm glad there was an educational moment in there for the audience, even if it was primarily a commercial, but I do wish there were more discussions of losing weight as a healthier lifestyle on the show and in general in these types of reality tv shows. Not to mention magazines, books, etc. I hate to say it, but it influences my outlook, too. (Heck, what have I been talking about with my Sunday eating? It's exactly what I have a tendency to do.)

I think your WO plans, adjusting them to keep Pump class and add speedwork are very reasonable. Something has to give a little in order to challenge yourself, and it might be some of those miles. Especially since you're not supposed to ramp up both the intensity and duration if you want to avoid injury.

Great news on the trip to Atlantic City with DH to coincide with the wedding. A little couples time is a good thing. I assume you're off doing that now, but I hope you have a great weekend! With some lovely stories to share when you return!

Vicky: Yes, do remind me this Sunday not to be an idiot. You can, and should, use those very words. :sad2: Post LR? If I'm away from home (race) or in a time crunch, I'll do a power bar of some kind: Think or Clif are my preferred brands. DOOD likes Mocha Frappacinos and chocolate shakes. If I eat at home, it's yogurt with fruit and granola, maybe some flaxseed. I really should grab some whey protein, too. Good idea. I just love my yogurt and could eat it 3x day. Sometimes I'll get a craving for chocolate milk, too. Or I'll repeat breakfast: PB with bagel/banana. Yeah, basically breafkfast foods all day long, if I can get away with it.

Jeff: I hope your cold is better!

Jeanne: Good luck with CMM and a pain-free race.

Maria: Book recommendations pending!

Amy: Pictures of your medal? And don't you have an upcoming race?

All other lean meaners... Thinking of you!

As for me: And like what Beth and Cindy have said about their own eating, I have a tendency to be really, really good or to overindulge. Had my own moment last night during my snack. Started in with a skinny cow truffle bar (FYI, it's slightly richer than a fudgesicle and not what I was expecting). That didn't satisfy my craving--not hunger, craving for junk food. So I went on to eat pretzels. And then went to bed on an uncomfortably full stomach. Hopefully, lesson learned. Until the next time. :rotfl2:

On the upside, DOOD's birthday was uneventful, the best thing to hope for until next week ends. He went to bed early, after enjoying a dinner that included key lime pie. (I don't like key-lime pie, hence the incident with the Skinny Cow.) Still hard to know if he liked his presents. I got him a Running Banana shirt that had this quote from the tv show The Wire printed on the back (customized):

The game's
out there.
And it's play
or be played.

Hi friends......sorry I've been MIA.....there's been alot going on. My sweet neighbor came over to get me on April 8....her DH wasn't breathing. I ran over and did CPR on him until the ambulance got there. I think I knew that I was too late, but I tried anyway and he didn't make it. I spent the next few days dealing with (I can't even describe the emotion) and helping the family (2 of their kids live in our neighborhood too). He was the nicest man (only 65, still young) and he is missed. Then, it was Easter--big holiday for our family and at our house. Then, I've followed in everyone's footsteps and had my own set of Dr's appointments. My cholesterol is good, Deb, so I'm out of suggestions (especially considering how many eggs and cupcakes w/cream cheese icing that I ate). But, and there's always a but, my Dr. heard a heart murmur that I've never had before. This led to an echocardiogram. I'm waiting on results...I'll let you know.
I am soooooooo ready for summer and to be done with my kiddos crazy schedules. I watched the Boston Marathon on Monday. My DS loves Ryan Hall. Were any of our Bostonians on the sidelines watching? I keep trying to Google search and figure out how to get an autographed pic of Ryan Hall, but I'm not finding anything helpful. My DS is following him on Twitter....I don't even know what that means:confused3.
My little guy's hopping out of the tub.....gotta go....promise to be back soon.:)

Hey Lean Meaners! Coming to you from the road! We are somewhere in NJ, on the way to the family wedding.

We had a GREAT time in AC! We won $500.00 at the craps table, and with the most excellent free hotel suite, it was the best! The room was at least 1200 square feet, with a big multiple head shower, jacuzzi tub, a tv in the bathroom, a living room with a huge TV and an extra powder room! I am only sad that it was only one night. My dh used reward points for the room, so we didn't have to pay for it. By the looks of the web site, the room is probably $1,000 a night! :scared1: We spent a few hours at the Tropacana casino, and luckily happened upon a 'hot' craps table! We cleared $500! Good night all 'round!:cool1:

I did get up early yesterday to run, and did my standard 3 miles. I got up today too and got 7 miles in on the hotel elliptcal. I am glad I got it done before the wedding, so I don't have to worry about it!

Debra: I hear ya on the nutritional information. It's hard to know what to listen to sometimes. I did just read that eggs are good for you and act like ACE inhibitors for blood pressure! I didn't know that. Also higher circulating Vit C in the blood lowers blood pressure too! (New Shape magazine). I don't know...... I think your Sunday treat day sounds ok......if we never eat those things we like, it can bite you in the end. I don't want to feel deprived, and if I have to carry a few extra pounds to be able to eat those things I like so be it. Nothing can be substituted for a good cookie!

I couldn't get on the live results for the CMM either. My friend Heidi is running her first marathon. She currently has 3 miles to go. My thoughts are with her.....it is the hardest part!

The weather is beautiful, and I am looking forward to running outside tomorrow!

Beth

**edited to add**** Tracey: I am so sorry to hear about the neighbor who passed. What a terrible thing. I am glad though that you tried to help....some people wouldn't have. He was way too young to die, and has me thinking that I will continue to live a healthy lifestyle. I would hate to be the one that someone is trying to save. So, Lean Meaners, we will continue trying to live the healthy way! My prayers to the family and to you too Tracey. A very trying time for everyone.

Hey Lean Meaners! Hooray for the weekend!

Beth - Congrats on the win!! And it's cool that you got an upgrade! I've never stayed in such a huge hotel suite before - you and DH must have felt like celebrities! How did your friend Heidi do on her marathon?

Tracey - What a crazy month! Sorry to hear about your neighbour  Your story reminds me that CPR training was on my 'to-do' list a little while ago. As for the autograph, maybe your DS could send a letter to Ryan Hall or his coach and you could get something that way?

Debra - I'm a big fan of breakfast foods but usually just the sweet stuff  What does flaxseed taste like? I like the Clif bars too but haven't eaten them lately since peanut butter was my favourite flavour.

Cindy - Good luck tomorrow! :cheer2:

AFM - I took today off since my 10K is tomorrow. I went to get my hair cut and I feel like I lost 10 pounds :goodvibes I also stopped by Whole Foods for a few treats. DF joke is that I'm the only person who goes into an organic food store and comes out with junk. Well, it's only semi-junk - I picked up a few cheeses and an olive baguette! I also love their peanut butter chocolate chip cookies so I grabbed a few of those too!

Anyway, I'm hoping the weather clears up by the morning. Otherwise it will be my first race in the rain.

Have a great weekend everyone! :wave2:

I'll catch up with you all tomorrow.
Beth, I'm glad you had a good time in AC.
Tracey, I'm relieved to see you back here, but am saddened for the reason you've been away.
Vicky, I've got responses for you in all areas. ;)
Jeff, your DDs are more coordinated than I can ever hope to be.

:stitch: 'Ohana Monday Mixer :stitch:

I've been thinking about how to create a hot topic for this week's mixer question. Turns out, the weather cooperated with me. :lmao:

Many areas of the country experienced above average temperatures this weekend, which made many of our weekend distances uncomfortable. (I was thinking especially of how the weather affected the racers at CMM, particularly our very special WISHers). So this week's mixer topic, which starts here on the 'Ohana thread:

What are your training/racing/recovery tips and strategies for hot-weather conditions?

Feel free to tell us how you alter your routines: when you go out, what gear you use or what you wear, how you hydrate and fuel differently, how to recognize danger signs, how you keep cool and/or recover from overheating, and when you decide to shorten/quit/take it inside.

As we all know, going out in the heat can be dangerous, so please help all of us by sharing your knowledge. :thumbsup2

Tracey,

Sorry to hear of the loss of your neighbor. I'm sure you did your best trying to save his life. :grouphug:

Hey Lean Meaners! Anyone around????? :confused3

I had such a good weekend! I am sorry it is over!:guilty:

Nancy is back to work, and I am so happy!!!!:cool1::thumbsup2

Beth

Hi all!
Beth....$500 :cool1: and a beautiful hotel room, too! Perfect:goodvibes
Vicky...hope your 10k went well. I'm trying to find an address for Ryan Hall and I can't seem to find anything:confused3.
Jeff...your girls look like they're having fun.
Debra....hope all is well.

If I haven't already said it a million times....I'm ready for Summer Vacation! The kids have so much going on, I swear everything gets packed into the last month of school. Take care all.

Good Morning Lean Meaners,

Tracey: Hope you make it thru the last month of school. Only 1 of mine is in school so far, and I know what you mean about cramming so many things in that last month. My DS doesn't get out until June 24th, so we still have a ways to go. I'm sorry to hear about your neighbor. What a wonderful thing you did in trying to revive him. Hugs to you. I'm sure it was hard.

Beth: I'm glad you had a great weekend. Even better that Nancy is back to work. Have you gone back to part time now? I'm sure you'll really appreciate the extra time.

Jeff: Thanks for the info about Baskin Robbins, not sure you ought to be posting it on the Lean Mean thread though.

Vicky: Hope your race went well. How'd the new sleek hairdo work out for you? Did it make you super speedy? Did you end up running in the rain. Thanks for the well wishes for my race.

Debra: Hope the eating is going well. Are you continuing with the Self challenge? Hope all is well.

My race this weekend proved to be very hot. Around 85-90 at 1 PM when the 10K started. My 4 yr old daughters ran the Tot Trot and had a great time. They were so proud of their ribbons.
Apr2809066.jpg

Before the race I told them that it was OK if they didn't win because I was worried that they might get upset if they didn't. I also told Erin that it was OK if Amy finished ahead of her and not to worry if she couldn't see her. Amy is a much faster runner than Erin and I figured it would be likely that Amy would run ahead. They had about 150 yds to run for their race, so I got them in the starting coral then walked ahead about 1/2 way so I could cheer. When the race started I kept looking for them as all the kids streamed by and couldn't see them. Then just as the last kids were coming by I see the 2 of them running together holding hands. Both were laughing and smiling. It was quite cute.

This photo was taken by the race photographer which is probably why it's smaller than the others.

After the race Erin told me that she held Amy's hand so she couldn't finish ahead of her. I really think it was because she didn't want to be beat by her sister, not because she was worried about losing sight of her. Maybe she has a little too much competitive spirit? Where'd she get that?

Apr2809077-1.jpg

For my race I knew I by about the 1/2 mile mark that it was too hot for me to run fast. I decided I would work on race strategies like running the tangents and extending my stride on the downhills. It worked out really welll for me. I ended up chatting to strangers as I ran past them which is really unlike me so I had a great time. My time which wasn't super fast was still 5 minutes faster than when I ran this race 2 years ago when I was 35 lbs heavier and just starting to get back into shape. The added bonus was since I didn't really race hard my legs were not very sore the next day. I still took 2 days off from running and will get out there for an easy run today.

My eating has been relatively good for the past week. There was some more birthday cake, and the race on Sunday had home-baked goodies at the finish. I feel like I'm a bit more in control now which helps tremendously with my mood.

I've got to put together a training plan for the rest of the Spring. I've signed up for a few shorter races and even a triathlon in July. I'm kind of excited about branching out a bit.

Have a great day everyone.
Cindy

HEY Lean Meaners!!

Just LTO over here, in the form of an almost 2 year old girl!! Little D is so busy. She loves the pool so we've been in there alot.

I have been ON as far as being on track. Since April 6th I am down 9 pounds, about 1/2 of which was vacation gain, but the other 1/2 is new territory. I am 1 .5 pounds from getting into the 170's!! So excited about this. I made a few small changes with my eating and am trying to get at least 30 minutes a day of some kind of exercise. Walking, wogging, wii fit, pilates, core stuff, shred. Haven't found my running mojo yet. But the weight loss seems to be more consistent with less miles and intensity. It was last year for me too when I was still walking more than running. I am going to sign up for a 5k that is in mid june, so I need to make a short term plan to hopefully maybe take a minute off my PR. I would like to go under 33 minutes. It is a flat course, so I think this is doable.

Cindy LOVED the pics of your girls! So cute. it sounds like the race went well despite the heat.

Tracey So sorry to hear about your neighbor. And good for you for remaining calm. I know how to do CPR, but fear that I would totally freak if I actually had to do it.

Vicky Hope your race went well!

Debra No race until the June 5k. But this one is on a friday night, on a flat course, and there is BEER at the end. Sweet. :thumbsup2

And since I whined about it so much on here, my gasparilla half medal. It is smaller sized, but weighs almost as much as the Donald.

Everyone:

Just a quick pop-in.....

Cindy: love the race story about your daughters. They are so cute and the photo of them running together is just precious! Best of all, it looks like they really had fun.

Amy: Awesome medal....congrats!

Tracey: so sorry about your neighbor......very sad.

Beth: Congrats on getting your favorite co-worker back! Please make sure she doesn't overdo it.

I'm so sorry to :car:, but it's the only way I'll get to post here today :sad1:

Basically, I'm changing my eating and working out philosophy and seeing what that gets me. I've dumped the 6 mi runs until I'm training, in favor of more 4 milers that actually happen. I'm planning and tracking all my food, and in just a few days I've already seen a big difference. I'm also resting every 4th day, instead of once a week. It's early days yet, but hopefully this will be the magic formula :wizard:

Cindy -- Your girls are absolutely precious! What a great day for your family, even though you didn't have the race of your dreams :yay:

Tracey -- I'm so sorry for what you went through. I know that sometimes it's pretty hard to be the person who tries to help when it isn't successful.

Jeff -- Even from the back your princesses are cute, too! princess:

Beth -- I know you are thrilled to have Nancy back! Take good care of my Cousin! :stitch:

Vicky -- How was the 10K? Did you have a great time (in more ways than 1!)? :cool1:

Debra -- Ok, so here's my new thing with the eating. I'm writing down a food plan for the next day each evening. Then I tell myself I absolutely, positively cannot eat anything not on the plan. I have No Choice if I want to achieve my goals, and losing weight is more important to me than momentary gratification (this is from The Beck Diet Solution), I can't claim to have come up with it on my own. So far, so good. I also check off each food I do eat, and congratulate myself (silently! ;)) for sticking with my food plan to lose weight.

That's all I have for now. :wave2: to the other Lean Meaners (that means you -- Connie, Wendy, Mike, AmyK, Julie, Jeanne, Nancy)!

Maria :upsidedow

Hey guys (and girls!) Yes I am glad to have Nancy back!!!! More than I can say! Don't worry Jeanne, I am watching her like a hawk, and not letting her do to much. She is starting to notice! I am working with her the rest of the week and next if she needs me. I don't want her pulling patients yet.....and we do alot of that sometimes. Actually the hospital is pretty slow right now (why now???? and not before????) so we are both having it pretty easy.

I am taking the kids to baseball practice, so I will try to catch up with everyone later!

Beth

Good morning everyone,

Amy: Very nice medal. Sorry you had to wait so long for it, but it looks like it's worth the wait. I'm glad you are enjoying your time with Delena. Have you begun to look for a job? Congrats on the 9 lb losss. Even if some of it was re-loss, it's great. Stick with what is working. Taking 1 minute off your PR sounds like a reasonable goal. Good luck with finding the running mojo. Maybe just having a race planned will help with that.

Jeanne: Hope all is well and your pain is minimal.

Maria: Your plan sounds great to do less more often. If it's more likely to get done that will help a lot. I like your eating plan too. I may borrow that idea as well. I have The Beck Diet plan. I should go back to reading that since I've never finished it. I really thought some of her ideas were helpful.

Beth: I'm glad that things at work are a bit slow, Nancy can get back into the swing at an easy pace. Have a good day.

My eating has continued to be pretty good. I've begun a downward trend on the scale. I'm still 4 lbs up from where I was a couple months ago, but I'm hoping I continue in the right direction. I've done a Jillian DVD 3 days in a row. I switched to 8 lb weights rather than the 5 lbs I was using. The 8's are just a little heavy for me, so I'm switching back and forth with the 5's until I can use the 8's for all the exercises. Something to shoot for.

Hello to all the other Lean Meaners and lurkers as well. Have a great day.

Cindy

Good morning everybody.....
Cindy...Your girls are so cute! Oh my goodness! I love that they ran together and held hands. One of my boys is definitely faster than his brother, but when they run in a race they always seem to stay together. I love that. It sounds like you had a good race, too. I always seem to talk to people along the run...it makes it go faster for me.
Amy....Cool medal and well worth the wait. Congrats on the weight loss.
Jeanne....hope all is well.
Maria....Your food plan sounds like a good one. I'm with Cindy, in that I started the Beck Diet Solution, but didn't finish it.
Beth...I know that you're so happy to have Nancy back. She is blessed to have such a good friend.

Thanks for everyone's sweet words. I keep reminding myself that life is full of peaks and valley's and sometimes the valley's are deeper than others. My weight is remaining constant which is better than gaining, but I still need to lose more. Have a great day, all!

Cindy and Tracey -- Just out of curiousity, where did you stop in the Beck Diet Solution? When I first picked it up I went to day 20, and then nothing. This time I've been going over several days at a time until I get back to day 21, which I plan to start tomorrow...I just wondered if for some reason we all stopped in the same place! :goodvibes

Beth -- I'm not exactly sure what it means to "pull" a patient, but that sounds strenuous! I'm so glad you are there for Nancy to keep her workload lighter and ease her transition.

I ran 4 mi on the TM this morning. I'm having lunch at P.F. Chang's today, so I'm planning on zero snacks. I'm having a lunch bowl -- hot & sour soup, brown rice and some kind of chicken or beef, and I'll also get a petite (shot glass size) dessert. I'm hoping that with omitting the snacks I'll still lose for tomorrow's official weigh in. If I don't, I'm taking today's weight for this week! ;) We have leftover homemade pizza for dinner, but I find it makes me really hungry (too many carbs at once for me), so I may opt for something else I can find around the kitchen.

Maria :upsidedow

Tracey: Don't we all have to lose more weight! :rolleyes1:sad2: But, being constant right now is great. Sometimes maintaining a weight is much harder than gaining and losing. It's my main problem! The only time I maintained a weight is when I weighed 231 pounds for several years! Take it easy on yourself, it's all good.

Cindy: WTG with the race and the eating plan! Sounds good!

Maria: Whenever I need a boost, I like to read up on different diet plans! (Like a stupid kind of hobby! :scared1:) When I start to think of weight loss as a 'hobby' I need to seriously get this weight off and keep it off!

AFM: Well, I have only done 1 workout a day for the last two days. I have a 1/2 marathon on Sunday, so I am 'saving' myself! I am logging some decent mileage, but I have figured out that the longest run I have done since my last half has been 8 miles! Running twice a day, I don't log longer runs at once. I hope it will be ok when it comes race time! I have maintained the >30 miles a week for about 6 weeks now....... who knew? Twice a day workouts have helped!
