Weight loss for Wishers and becoming Leaner Meaners!

What a busy day.

Woke up to finish detailing the truck, now it's nice and clean again.

Went to the zoo to see the three sumatran tiger cubs. Not so small anymore, since they were born in December.

Off to a bike swap, but it was all the real expensive parts being sold used. Not what I was anticipating.

Took the girls for a two mile bike ride around Kapiolani Park. That brought us to lunch.

Planned to go to the neighborhood pool, but it wasn't open. So the keiki splashed around in our home wading pool. Kept them busy while I crashed hard. Seems I caught a head cold. Must be all the running around I did last week, that just caught up to me.

Later in the afternoon, changed the tires on my bicycle from mountain bike tires to road tires. I degreased the chain and derailleur, and wiped down the frame. Now I need to take it into the shop for a tune up.

That brought us to dinner time. Had the girls help make spaghetti with Portuguese sausage and garlic. Mmmmm.

Ready to call it a early night. Running is iffy tomorrow with this little cold .

Hey Lean Mean Brigade!

We are taking today off from church, and I slept until 9. That felt good, so I must have needed it!

I did my 6 mi Friday and 40 bike min yesterday, and I'm going to do another 6 today as soon as dh wakes up :rolleyes1. Today I'm focusing more on walking than jogging. I have a high mileage (for me) week planned, so I don't want to burn out too early.

Yesterday afternoon into evening ds and I did a Stitch marathon. We watched all four movies. He was lovin' it, and they were cuter than I remembered -- but by the last one I was totally falling asleep.

Tomorrow is Patriots' Day here, so no school. I'm going in to work since I won't be anywhere near the Marathon -- dh has the day off and that allows me to use another vacation day this week for ds, who has the entire week off. That's the Boston Marathon, and everything around here kind of stops for the coverage, especially since most people have the day off. The big news this year is there's an American who has a chance to win.

Jeff -- It sounds like you had a great day with your girls! princess: I hope that cold hits the road quickly.

Debra -- I ended up working out every day I had intended last week :yay: and I answered you on the wrong thread -- The Harpoon 5 Miler is so popular because when you finish they hand you two tickets for free beer (Harpoon Brewery is the sponsor), and they also have sausage, hot dogs, etc., bands -- it's a big party. I am not a beer drinker, but Harpoon IPA happens to be dh's favorite. Ice cream is year-round for us. New Englanders eat more ice cream per capita than any region in the U.S., which is a bit surprising. Did you like the Skinny Cow? We buy the ice cream sandwiches by the case at BJs. :thumbsup2

Beth -- I was seriously frustrated by the Cordy situation. After all that, you have got to be kidding me. Poor Angel just could not catch a break. Did you hear a few weeks ago that Andy Hallett (Lorne) passed away? He had a heart condition. I believe he was just in his mid 30s, so very sad. :sad1:

Jeanne -- Count me as a mac and cheese lover, too. I'm going to have to track down that recipe! I hope the pain patch starts to work better. I know you want to be active, and you should be able to do it pain-free. :goodvibes

Big Howdies to Vicky, Tracey, Mike, Cindy, Wendy, AmyK, Connie and Julie :cheer2:

Maria :upsidedow

Beth: I hope your weekend flew by and was wonderful! :goodvibes

Jeff: I stand corrected on ice-cream season. Somewhere in there there's a rabbit season/duck season joke, too, but I can't quite place it. Ah, here's your weekend update with the princesses. It sounds like you had quite the busy (and hopefully fun) weekend. But I am sorry to hear about the cold and hope it doesn't knock you down for days on end. Are you ready for the Queen to return?

Maria: Sometimes sleeping in is the most luxurious thing, isn't it? A Stitch marathon sounds like just the thing I need to lift my spirits--so I'm stealing your ideas. And I hope it is the thing I need to motivate me to do 1/2 the mileage you've been doing daily. I'm so proud of you for keeping to your WO schedule, too! Thanks for the info on the Harpoon 5 Miler. It sounds like just the kind of race to plan as part of a trip to your fair city. Although planning ahead is not DOOD or my strength. :rolleyes1

Are you happy to missing the marathon? Is DH taking DS to spectate? Have you ever been? I think I'd like to go once, just to see it.

Amy: What's your Gasparilla 1/2 medal look like?

Hello to all the Lean Meaners out there: Hoping to hear from you and find out how you're doing. :flower3:

As for me: I actually haven't opened the Skinny Cow ice cream yet. :confused3 (Maria, what is BJs?) My eating, working out, and sleeping schedule have been a bit off these last few days. Nothing seems to taste good and the idea of ice cream isn't appealing. I mean, I thought I'd be tempted immediately after I bought them, but when it comes to opening the box...nothing. We didn't even make the mac & cheese. I've just been eating salads and fruits, etc. I just default into the easy to make/eat options. Now, while I realize this is good for me, and I should be happy about it, I'm frankly a little concerned that the good stuff doesn't sound that good to me. :rotfl2: Seriously, I think it's a 24-hour bug or something, as I'm unreasonably wiped out after a run. Lots of naps today and I felt better than Friday or Saturday.

:stitch: 'Ohana Monday Mixer :stitch:

And now for a bit of silliness, just because... :teeth: The mixer starts here.

This week's mixer theme is "Superpowers That Would Be More Trouble Than They're Worth," and your question:

What would be the superpower you would end up being granted?

Some examples:
  • The ability to tell the future, but only one minute ahead of time.
  • Super-strength, but only in your thumbs.
  • The ability to read the minds of people whose language you don't understand.
  • The ability to see through one layer of clothes.
  • Super breath, strong enough to knock down your opponents. Unfortunately, it's because you're smells like garlic and you always have that power.

Of course, your superpower is unique to you. So feel free to tell us what you would do with your power or why you got so lucky as to be given it. :rolleyes1 Bonus points--again, they're worth nothing--for telling us what superpowers you think other WISHers might get. (Keep it DIS-friendly, though, folks!)

Hey Lean Meaners! Hope everyone had a fantastic weekend! We had warm and sunny weather - great for running, biking or just being outside for whatever. Strangely, I didn't see too many other people out. Figured maybe people are starting to head up to their cottages. Works for me since the city stays quiet :)

Jeff - Is that sunburn 101 a dig at my age? Or where I live? - we get sunshine here but not enough. Speaking of... time to get out the sunscreen, especially for longer runs. I think it's very cool that your DD participates in tris! Most parents I know are happy to have their kids sitting in front of a TV. Hope your cold goes away soon!

Beth - Sorry to hear about the disorganized coach. Funny how the small things can really throw your schedule off. How was your sister's birthday?

Maria - I didn't realize that people took the day off for the Boston Marathon but it makes sense since it's such a big event. I wonder if it will air on TV here.

Jeanne - Count me in as someone who doesn't like the TM either. I love the fresh air and seeing other runners and bikers while I'm out. Plus, the TM always has me feeling off balance for some reason. Sorry to hear about the pain patches... I hope they kick in soon. I don't have much experience with them.

Debra - I don't remember that particular Bill Cosby quote. I do remember the Jello Pudding Pops commercials. So I can't be that young... I just like to invert my age! Why did they stop making them? Sooo yummy! And the cake ... it's only healthy if it's good cake! That's part of my "clean" eating plan  Sorry to hear you're feeling under the weather!

AFM - I did my 9 miler on Saturday. My hamstrings were really tight and I could really feel them toward the end of my run so I slowed down a lot. Not too happy with the pace but I finished in about the same time as my 8 miler the previous week so that's not too bad. I ran 4 miles today which was much better! Managed to go at a 10:30 m/m and I think I'm seeing improvements on the hills :)

DF had a stomach bug this weekend so we were eating light. Or so he claimed anyway. His BFF is visiting today and we ordered pizzas. I'm sure that will make his day tomorrow interesting.

Have a great night everyone! :goodvibes

Vicky,

It was not a post about your age. What I meant was you'd be waddling from the sunburn, since you never get to see the sun. That's all, honest. ;)

As for me, I rested in the morning, which allowed me to take the girls to our Girl Scout meeting in the afternoon. We're planning our summer camp for all our troops in June. 4th & 5th graders have a strange sense of what is a nutritious meal plan. We leaders vetoed a lot of their suggestions. :rotfl:

My keiki do sometimes get hypnotized by the television. So our rule of thumb is watch something educational. So they are allowed to watch Discovery, History, Animal Planet, and the Food Network. We do set time limits on the weekends. Weekdays they don't get to watch much, since they go to bed early.

Other times they're either reading, on the piano, drawing, or walking the dogs up to our park. We keep them active as possible, including Aikido, Girl Scouts, and a once a year kid's triathlon (for the Princess#1).

Deb, the Queen just left on Friday. We can survive without her for more than the weekend. Don't you trust in me? LOL.

I just have to clarify for Vicky, Patriots' Day is a state holiday -- so many folks have the day off. The Boston Marathon happens to be run on Patriots' Day, so people will often either go to it or watch it on tv, since it's on abc, nbc, and cbs, it's hard to miss! You will find that lots of people who don't have the day off take it off because there isn't any school, so they have to provide child care. Also, if you work anywhere near the route, it's impossible to get in and out, it's just easier to stay home.

We used to live a few blocks from the route, so we'd walk over and see the lead runners before they headed into the final stretch. Now I live quite far away, so we watch on tv if we're home.

I'm off to the land of Nod. Here's hoping I dream up a good superpower for the Ohana Mixer tomorrow!

Vicky,

It was not a post about your age. What I meant was you'd be waddling from the sunburn, since you never get to see the sun. That's all, honest. ;)

Oh gotcha! I wish we had more sun - I need to win the lottery so I can spend my winters somewhere warm and sunny!

Maria - Oh I thought it was like St. Patrick's day or something like that. Here everyone just takes the day (or afternoons off) regardless :)

:lmao: Oh Vicky!

We celebrate Evacuation Day on March 17th (It's the day the British left Boston for good). That's a County holiday, so it's just my immediate area rather than the whole state, but of course we had to find a reason to for Govt. folk and kids to have that day off! ;) I can just seem some Irish govt. minion searching through history to find a reason to make March 17th a holiday...probably by order of one of our illustrious Mayors, probably the one who served from jail! :rotfl2:

I think some of the "holidays" we have are hysterical. Bunker Hill Day is coming up in June. We celebrate a battle the Patriots lost on that day -- but we can't have too many months without official holidays! :rotfl:

Everybody have a great day! I just did 4mi on the TM and I'm off to breakfast so I can get to work.

Maria :upsidedow

Good morning everyone! I am back!

The weekend was nice.....our one friend who came along ended up getting a stomach bug, which curtailed her weekend, but the rest of us could continue on! We spent Friday night at the King of Prussia mall, where I found a dress for a wedding this weekend (with shoes, which I always hate since my feet always hurt! :sad2:). Saturday, we went to Longwood Gardens to see the Spring flowers (which were beautiful!) and Sat night was spent at Delaware Park playing the slots! My sister and her friend were winners, but alas, I again was a big loser! We had fun anyway!

Debra: Yeah, Wilmington is only 20 minutes outside of Philly, and alot cheaper. Actually, Longwood Gardens was only about 12 miles away from our hotel! It worked out nicely!

BJ's is like Sam's club, just a different one. Big bulky buying!

Maria: Yes, I don't get the whole Cordy thing right now! Poor Angel was so hurt that his son and Cordy were 'getting it on'. I felt bad too. Right now they are hunting that big yucky demon......he is really ugly. I didn't know that Lorne died! That makes me feel bad......I actually love him! Horns and all! I am sorry to hear it, and yes I think he was pretty young!

Jeff: I hope you are feeling better! I hate colds, especially when it is Spring (here, of course).

AFM: I got all my workouts in even though I was on vacation! I got up early Friday to get in 3 miles. And I got up early Sat and Sun to get a workout in before doing anything else. It's easier for me to get it done early!

Eating didn't go perfect, but it wasn't as bad as it could have been! I count myself good to go!

Beth

Hey Lean Meaners! Not much of import to report here ... let's see, I had my training session yesterday. My PT was on vacation so I worked out with DF's trainer. We did a boxing workout which was fun. It's a nice break from the weights. Works out better too since I have a 10K on Sunday so I didn't really want a fatiguing workout.

I watched bit and pieces of the Boston Marathon yesterday. I felt really badly when I saw how crestfallen Kara Goucher was at the finish. Coverage in Canada wasn't great. I thought it would have been better since our Minister of International Trade was running in the race. Go figure!

Maria - You know, I was just thinking how there are no holidays here in June. Maybe next March, I'll tell my manager that I'm celebrating Evacuation Day.

Beth - I think it's great you were able to keep up with your workouts on vacation. That's one thing I've never been able to do. Good for you :)

Chat ya later everybody!

Beth: Oh, you didn't kill the thread. I spread myself too thin yesterday for my online social time. Great weekend! I love it when you can combine activities, especially if it makes shopping less painful by having it be a social time. (I hate shopping.) The gardens sound beautiful, though, and that's a special treat.

And you still got your workouts in over this weekend. :worship: You've got to feel great about that. Helps you keep on your weight-loss schedule, which hopefully makes your loss at the slots LESS painful. (Can you believe I've never played the slots? Or gambled?)

Vicky: Time for me to be a nag. Wear sunscreen on EVERY run. ;) My dad was/is a big fan of Bill Cosby, so I know all his routines, even the ones I'm too young to know. That's why the chocolate cake as nutritious sticks with me. (But yeah, I'll take digs at my age any day!)

Congratulations on toughing it out on the 9 miler. When my hammy bothers me I can get so distracted that I just bag the run. You didn't, so :thumbsup2. And I have to add, there's nothing better than seeing improvement on hill work. For some reason, I anthropomorphize those hills and seem them as my personal enemy. So to beat them... :lmao: What's your 10K this weekend?

Jeff: Of course I trust in you and your awesome caretaking skills! For example, I'm in awe that the princesses have such limited tv-viewing, and what's allowable. I was raised in front of a tv. (My dad works for a television station, so I was also taken there when I was a kid....) I just thought you might miss the Queen. (But heck, DOOD leaves for a month in June and I'm practically sweeping him out the door now....so what do I know?)

Summer camp, huh? Sounds like a lot of fun and very little sleep, especially for the leaders. What do the scouts think is nutritious? I'll bet their choices are at least delicious. Ants on a log. mmmmmm.

Maria: I want to live where you live. Lots of holidays! Although, in Pgh, every Steelers home game is a holiday... Congratulations on getting your 4 miles in nice and early. That's got to feel good! (Speaking as someone who has yet to do so today...)

As for me: I've discovered Monday's are my hard workout days. :confused3 Another near-bonk. I think it's because Sundays are our "go out for coffee and a nosh, read the paper days." I don't eat as well, trying to balance out the junk calories by eating smaller portions elsewhere. It makes the WO hard. On the upside, I've scheduled that day for XT. And it helped me maintain my 1-pound loss from last Friday's weigh in! So I guess I can't complain about it.

Haven't yet run today. Got up to do it, but it's been threatening rain. And since yesterday it hailed, I've been hesitant. And of course the sky hasn't opened up yet but just keeps getting darker and darker. So it looks like a lunchtime run. Should have just manned up.

Hey Lean Meaners! I've been pretty busy lately at work and outside of work on a few personal projects. Unfortunately that means I haven't had as much time to cook at home and I've eaten out about 3x since last Thursday. I know that's not a lot for most people but I noticed that I was feeling pretty bloated and blah over the past few days and I'm pretty sure that's the reason. I've pretty much not eaten out since the middle of February, except for the occasional meal here and there.

Debra - You know, I use to be really good with sunscreen but then when I started running, I pretty much stopped wearing it. No idea why but I'm definitely going to have to start again. I notice I have a slight tan line on my wrist where my Road ID was. Was your near-bonk because of a lack of water or food? Or just working out too hard?

AFM - Oh and a non weight or food related dumb moment. It was a busy morning at work. So busy that in the middle of all the craziness - I took my engagement ring off in the washroom and left it there. How dumb is that? Worse was the fact that I didn't even notice it was gone until mid morning. I haven't been wearing it lately because it's a little loose and I usually go running after work. Guess I should listen more when someone tells me not to take it off when I'm washing my hands. Luckily, the person who found left a note so I got it back in the end. So I'm heading downstairs after lunch to give her a gift card to say thank-you.

Have a great day everyone!

Good afternoon Lean Meaners......I really thought I had killed this thread! Where is everyone?????:confused3 I always feel stupid (and desperate) when posting back to back! Thankfully Debra and Vicky stopped by!

Debra: The nutrition and hydration thing is difficult. Sometimes things are just not working for me! I know with the double dipping, I don't fuel correctly. I so want the rest of this weight gone, that I go overboard sometimes. I think I saw that lesson last night on the Biggest Loser! I think Kristen's downfall and dismissal from the Ranch was all about not eating enough for the workouts she was doing! I am always trying to keep my calorie counts down too! And, hey, the getting up in the morning does get easier (it took all of 2 months) but it is easier now than before. I am glad for that. Maybe I will be able to keep it up even after Nancy returns!

Vicky: I am glad you found your ring......I am always very scared of doing the same thing!

AFM: Well, it won't be a double dip day today......I have a dinner tonight (for my Credit Union annual banquet). I am glad......the whole family's going so I don't have to cook! (Now if I can only stay away from the mashed potates!).....

Beth

***edited to add......I have had over 30 miles a week (running) for 4 straight weeks!!!!!

Vicky: I think it doesn't take very long for our bodies to react to changes in habits and eating routines, particularly the less-than-healthy ones. Not that what you were eating wasn't healthy, per se, but the change in portions, maybe the times you eat, etc.... And I'll bet you you're feeling less energetic, too. That always happens to me.

I'm a freak about sunscreen, mostly because I burn easily. DOOD never wears it and it drives me crazy!

I'm SOOOO glad nothing horrible happened to your engagement ring. That would have been heartbreaking. You work with some good, honest folk.

Beth: I missed the BL, although I've been thinking about the show since CMM is coming up and Dane is running the marathon--the whole one this time. What happened with Kristen and the food? I do think your double dipping has a positive effect on your energy level, in addition to the weight loss and the sleeping. I'm trying to move toward double dipping without necessarily increasing my WO time because of your experiences and for those benefits. I'm not sure I'm ready to get to 30 miles/week running, at least until I start Goofy training. :worship:

And I meant to tell you DOOD and I had your macaroni and cheese with broccoli last night. Unprompted, DOOD said the dish had a "nice tang" to it. :woohoo:

As for me: Today was Earth Day, so as part of my observations I did some cleaning around the neighborhood. More this weekend, with the official neighborhood organization. And I made a special pedestrian trip for DOOD's birthday gift (b-day is tomorrow). 6 miles round-trip. On foot and up and down hills. In addition to working out. I'm pretty happy with that. :goodvibes

To answer your question, Vicky, I think I'm bonking on Mondays because I'm not fueling & hydrating well on Sunday. That's "treat day" in my house, which means I'm drinking coffee (1x a week) and noshes (wish I could say it was 1x a week) but trying to compensate by eating less good food. I'm just going to have to accept Sundays are going to be splurge days if I want to avoid the near-bonk wonkiness of Mondays. :upsidedow That, or give up treats, and that ain't gonna happen.

Good morning everyone.

Beth: Great job on 30 miles per week. That's amazing that you've been able to keep it up for 4 weeks. I'm always wondering about the balance between working out and fueling and losing weight. My understanding is that as long as you're eating enough calories for your BMR then that should be enough, but I don't know if your body will only put up with that for a while and then start protesting. I never sustain the good eating for a long enough period to see what my body will do. How'd you do vs. the Mashed Potatoes?

Vicky: Glad you found your ring. That must have been very scary. Good luck in your 10K this weekend.

Debra: Good job for taking care of our Mother Earth. Good job on maintaining your 1 lb loss despite the noshes.

Maria: Hope you are enjoying school vacation week. I'm loving the less trafficky commute. I work on the wrong side of the river to get Bunker Hill day off.

Jeff: Hope your week without the Queen is going well.

Tracey: Hope all is well.

I have managed to eat well 2 days in a row. I think it's a recent record. It's amazing how much better I feel. I need to remind myself of that when I'm tempted to start in with the sweets again. My birthday was Monday and I treated myself to a Dunkin Donuts muffin, some chocolate chip cookies, Reese's pieces, a fabulous filet mignon dinner followed by dessert. I ended up feeling so gross. I deserve a treat, but I went way overboard. Maybe that was the impetus I needed to get back on track again. We'll see.

I've skipped a few runs over the last few weeks just because I've been so busy. I think I'll pay for that on Sunday when I'm running a 10K race. Add to the undertraining that the weather is supposed to be 80. Yikes! I'm just going to take it easy and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Yeah, I say that now, but when the gun goes off, my competitive spirit will take over and I'll be sucking wind before the end.

Have a great day everyone.
Cindy

Debra: Kristen (and the whole blue team) had to video record a day of meals they eat for Bob. They thought they were doing well, but they really weren't. They were not eating enough food to compensate for all the workouts. Breakfast was an egg white burrito which only had 250 calories. They were proud of that, but Bob said they should have eaten 2 a piece. Dinner, the three of them SHARED a 7.5 oz piece of fish.....Bob said that the 7.5 oz of fish should have been one serving, not shared. They are concentrating on reducing calories, but that isn't always good. Ron said that olive oil was just empty calories, and Bob just about flipped! All and all the nutrition discussion just lead to a 'commerical' for Biggest Loser Whey protein for your drinks! I was a little p.o.'ed that they whole thing was a ruse for an ad for something, but the premise was spot on with not eating enough. Kristen got burned with it, since not only didn't she lose weight.....she actually gained a pound!

My big problem with nutrition is that I tend to either eat decent but not enough, or I loosen up a little and eat all the wrong stuff! I get frustrated with not losing weight, and the next thing is that I am eating some stupid Oreo cookies (last night, and they were awesome!) and bagging all the good for me things I could be eating! :guilty:

AFM: I didn't work out this morning....with some guilt with it! But, I want to do pump class tonight, and try to do some speed work on the TM. I didn't get my mile repeats in last week related to the rain, so I will attempt to do it on the TM tonight. My dh is home (schedule changed at the last minute, YIPPEE!) tonight, and can cover the baseball scrimmage between the two teams. I can get my class in and some extra workout time, since baseball doesn't start until 6PM. That's the plan at least......sometimes Pump class takes it out of me, and it's hard to workout after class, but I will give it a try!

Guess what????? My dh is taking me over night to Atlantic City!!! My boys are heading to Penn State for the Blue and White game with my sister, so she and my dad will have them all weekend!!! DH and I have a wedding on Saturday (:headache:) but, we will spend Friday night in AC!!! I am really looking forward to it!

Beth

***edited to add***** Cindy: We were posting at the same time! I didn't do too bad eating last night....had some mashed potatoes, but not alot.......the trial came at 10:00 pm with a run in with a bag of Oreo cookies! I never buy them, but ds#1 needs them for school on Friday. DS#2 begged for some to eat at home, and I gave in.......I should never give in.......My dh had some, and then so did I! Oh well, back on track today!

Hey Lean Meaners! I'm curious - what does everyone eat after a LR? I make myself a fruit smoothie. It's got protein powder, frozen fruit (usually mangos), greek yogurt, water and a little bit of milk and Splenda. That usually keeps me going while I stretch, get shower and then I'll go for lunch.

Beth - Congrats on the consistent 30 miles/week! I watched that episode of BL. I was surprised by the amount of fat in ground chicken - I didn't realize it was 11%! Guess I'll stick with the ground turkey from now on - although, I don't think I've seen ground turkey breast at my supermarkets. Btw, I love Oreo cookies too! And Pirate cookies ... I'm going to stop now :)

Debra - Friday is my treat day so I too have trouble on Saturday. I always have to force myself to chug water at lunch and dinner., especially if we go to the movies and get popcorn! I'll post a reminder for you on Sunday to drink more water ;) Wish DOOD a happy birthday! Hope you guys have fun on your 6 mile walk!

Cindy - Happy belated birthday! :bday: And I have to say I can relate your the competitive streak. I do the same thing too :) Glad to hear that you'll have good weather for your race on Sunday. I think we're expecting the same this weekend. Hooray for the sunshine!

AFM - Not much of import to report today... it's a sunny day but cool. Even still, I find myself watching that clock, wishing it would move faster so I can go home and run!

Back to work for me! Have a great day everyone!

Vicky: My favorite post workout drink is chocolate milk. I use Nesquick powder because it has less sugar than others and sometimes I'll add Genisoy chocolate protein powder for a little extra protein. Nutritious and delicious.

Beth: Sorry about the oreos, but they are sooo good. Good to see you back on track today. Save up some extra calories so you can have fun this weekend.

Cindy
