Weight loss for Wishers and becoming Leaner Meaners!

Hi Guys.

The Tim McGraw song, "How Bad Do You Want It", was the voice of the angel on my shoulder this morning. I have to work a couple of 12 hour shifts the next two days so I was laying in bed thinking I'll just rest and go to work the next two days. The voice of the devil on one shoulder was saying "It's flipping COLD outside", my angel voice was "How Bad Do You Want It", while the devil voice was, "You will be tired all day and you need to rest". My angel countered with, "How Bad Do You Need It", and finally won me over. I do want it and I do need it. I can't take a step back just because it's a little inconvenient right now.

I got up and had some cereal and coffee, headed off to the gym and had a really good workout. Now I not only feel super and awake but energized. So yes I'm glad I got up and took care of business. Not only that I feel good about myself for getting up. I would have had a feeling of guilt if I'd just stayed in bed. We all need to define ourselves by how many battles like that we win and not how many times we give in. Remember you get stronger every time you resist the temptations that life throws at us.

We have a long winter ahead of us and at least for me now is the time to take charge and be strong. I will be a better athlete for it but more important a tougher person. I want to be proud of me not guilty about being weak. If I start giving in now it will get easier and easier to give in later as the days get darker and colder.

My mantra this year has been "Earn It". I want a strong athletic body and I want to be a faster walker and a contender in races. I can't accomplish these goals laying under the warm covers. I have to get up and get going, I have to earn them.

Stronger Panda :hippie:

Stronger Panda :hippie:

Panda Dave,

Must be all the bamboo shoots you've been eating that's giving you your strength and energy. No more Pandamic flu?

Happy Aloha Friday Team, as of 11/21/08 there are 50 days to the half, 51 to the full.

Long story short, we spent 3 hours in the emergency room Friday night.

Princess #2 slipped and fell on the kitchen floor (ceramic tile), and split open her chin. 10 stitches.

The floor won that battle.

Ice cream sundae at midnight made everything better.

Like a good daddy, I have photos if anyone wants to see the doctor and nurse in action. LOL.

Jeff, sorry to hear this. Your family has been through a lot lately. I'm glad that an ice cream sundae at midnight helped to make things better (how could it not? Ice cream makes everything better. ) My DD did the same thing on our hardwood floor a few years ago. After the stitches came out, we put vitamin E cream on it every day for a year (per the doctor's recommendation). Now I have to try really hard to find even the slightest trace of the scar.

Julie,

Excellent tip on the vitamin E. I remember hearing that before.

The grief my wife gave me last night. See, twice I had accidents as a kid that resulted in stitches in my chin.

The first was a bike accident, racing my brother home from the candy store. I was in third grade. I hit a metal pole, and wiped out on the sidewalk. About 10 stitches.

The second time I was a ice skating accident, while goofing off with friends. I was in my senior year of high school. 33 stitches, plus I lost a tooth.

So last night in the emergency room, my wife says to the doctor and nurse. "Like father, like daughter."

She's awake now, asking for pancake breakfast. She gets a hall pass from ballet class today, and going to Build a Bear to get a new friend.

The Santa pictures we planned to take today, will be delayed at least a week.

Good mornin' friends!

Connie...Awesome job on the 9lb weight loss:cheer2: Sorry to hear you've had bronchitis, but glad to hear the steroid shot helped. :cheer2: that ortho is happy with your progress. I'm sure you'll be back to fixing your hair in no time. You've been such a trooper through all of this.
Lynn...glad to hear you like your Garmin, I can't wait for Christmas. It's gotten colder here, too. I'm not an overly big fan of the cold, but I looooovvvveee SNOW and can't wait for the first accumulation of the year. And, I've started running in my tights with my running skirt and it's a comfy ensemble to run in.;)
Maria...Hey girl! I see what you mean about Sparkpeople. I'm trying just to get on and input my food amounts to help keep track. Did you get some great deals shopping? You're doing great keeping up with training and eating.
Cindy....:cheer2: 9lbs:cheer2: I'm going to try to stay on track with Thanks giving by running the local Turkey Trot 5k on Thursday morning. And I'm going to keep reminding myself about portion control. It seems like I'm really fighting to lose each pound right now and I definitely don't want to slide backwards (or forwards, since it's on the scale:rotfl2: ). Also, I'll be skipping the pecan pie this year.
Panda...."How Bad Do You Want It" could be my mantra. I love Tim McGraw! Way to go on sticking with your plan even when you didn't feel like it. That's why you're our inspiration!
Jeff...Oh, no! Poor princess. I hope she's feeling better, Build a Bear sounds like a perfect Get Well prize (and the ice cream doesn't hurt either). Did she get those cute new reindeer from BaB? They are sooooooo cute. "Like Father, like Daughter" now how many times have I said that about DH and the kids (but insert "son");) So who's the calm one at your house during emergencies?
Julie...Hey there, how are you?
Stacie, Vic, Wendy, Deb, Mike, Vicky, Beth, Lisa, Amy and everybody else..... How are you?

DS and I ran the Jingle Bell Run for Arthritis on Sunday. It's a fun little run where they give you bells to wear on your shoes. I've been sick this past week and was really not expecting anything too great, but I set a new PR!! So I'm very excited. My time was 30:40 which takes a minute off my best 5k and now I'm hoping to break 30! A lady with a large black lab wearing a huge collar of jingle bells was running with me for the first 1/2 and his constant jingle was keeping me on pace. Plus, I love dogs so it was perfect! When I made the turn to head back for the last 1/2, I just felt really good so I upped the pace and then started picking shirts to pass. It was a fun race. DS came in 2nd with a 16:57 time. He got a really nice plaque.
I received a pic in the mail on Friday from Mickey Mouse. It's an 8x10 and it says "Good Luck at the 1/2 Marathon, Tracey" and then it's signed by Mickey himself!;) It's hanging on the board in our kitchen to motivate me! I'll post a pic if DS will help me tonight!
I only lost 1/2lb this week, so I'm down 3 1/2 for November, another 1 1/2 and I meet my goal.
Have a great day all! Stay strong.

Good morning Meaners! Thanks to Tracey for starting the ball rolling this morning!

Good job on the race and weight loss Tracey! Good job for your ds too!

I had a pretty good weekend, and I am down 2 more pounds! Total is 14 since September! I am really happy with that! Only another 14 to go!!!!

I hope everyone has a good (short) week, and a happy Thanksgiving!

Beth

Good Morning folks!

Good job Tracey and Beth on the loss of pounds!

We have started putting up Christmas lights, the icicle lights go all the way around the house, and it is really tough to put them up in the wind, so we put up a string at a time, we got several up over the weekend, but probably only a quarter of all that need to go up - now - just hoping that it will calm enough this weekend to get the rest up! The wind will not be as much an issue putting the rest of the outside decorations up.

Jeff - pixiedust: for your daughter!

Dave - good job getting out, but I would not expect any less of you!

Have a great day!

Thanks Vicky, Lynn, Julie, Tracy, and everyone else who sent Pixie Dust.

My little Peanut, is recovering well. She's dealt with it pretty well considering the 10 stitches.

At our Girl Scouts meeting yesterday, everyone was asking her what happened. And her response was "my sister dropped me." Sorta a half truth answer.

What actually happened Friday night was her sister was squatting down, and Peanut was sitting on her sister's knees. And before her sister could catch her, she fell off all by herself. She landed face first hitting her chin on our ceramic tile floor in the kitchen.

I immediately applied direct pressure to stop the bleeding, and then put an ice pack. When I changed gauze, I could tell she was going to need stitches.

Before we left home, I was explaining calmly to Peanut what was going to happen. I had gone through this twice as a child, so I knew what was going to happen.

I talked to Peanut while driving her to the hospital. My wife couldn't decide to go to the hospital 4 minutes from our home, or the Women & Children's 10 minutes away. I simply drove to the Women's and Children's figuring they deal with kids every day.

They had "Finding Nemo" playing on the tv, which was a nice distraction. Even the emergency room had a small tv, to watch cartoon network.

My wife is squeamish when it comes to blood. Hearing our daughter crying and screaming in the emergency room had my wife in tears.

Then the time came for the doctor to put in the stitches. Even though I explained the procedure to Peanut, she still was in a panic mode while strapped into the papoose holder on the gurney. I had to let go of her hand, and come around to the end of the gurney, so she could see me and hear me talking to her, wipe away the tears, and getting her to relax.

When we were done, the doctor and nurse said we were one of the calmest set of parents they've ever seen. They said they normally get screamed at by parents yelling "do something, or you're hurting my child."

It was a traumatic experience for a soon to be six year old. One that Peanut said she does not want to repeat. She said she did like the ice cream and french fries that she got when we left the hospital.

On Saturday, our older daugther was jealous her sister got a get well Build a Bear. I told her if she got 10 stitches, she could have one as well. She immediately said NO!!!

So everything is back to normal. A follow up today with our pediatrician. Another 8 or 9 days and the stitches will have dissolved on their own.

Hi everyone! We're doing kitchen renos at home so right now all I have is a microwave, kettle and toaster to cook with. I usually pack my lunch and take it with me to work so this should make for an interesting week :)

Jeff - My sister and I did something like that we were younger. She got stitches in her chin and my parents were not impressed. :rolleyes1 I think she got ice cream and some other treats too. I have to say that ice cream is the #1 cure-all!

Tracey - Congrats on the PR and to your DS as well! The race sounded like a lot of fun! I love Christmas themed events!

Beth - WTG on the weight loss!! 14 pounds is awesome :cheer2:

Dave - Totally agree! It's very easy to start slacking off once you miss a workout.

Maria - How did the shopping go? (My favourite workout  )

Cindy - Canadian Thanksgiving was last month ... lots of tempting treats. What I tried to do was to have a little bit to eat before I went to a family dinner. A small cup of soup so I wouldn't be so ravenous when we started to eat. I also loaded up on veggies (and I asked that my aunt make some steamed veggies and a non dressed salad). I stayed away from the bread too - that was tough!

Connie - Glad to hear you're making progress :) Keep it up!

That's all for now!

Hi friends!:drive:
Beth...Wow! 2 more lbs. Awesome job!
Lynn...I love Christmas lights, but my DH is afraid of heights. So we compromise and he hangs lights from the porch and all over the bushes and I hang wreaths with lights out of the top floor windows. It makes for a really pretty look. Alot of our neighbors pay a company to come and hang lights, but I say there's nothing like a cold day where your fingers feel like like they're freezing off and you can stand outside and listen to your DH complain that another #*@% strand of lights is out and yelling commands at your kiddos while they grumble under their breath:lmao: :rotfl2: :lmao: ! Oh, the sounds of the season. Ya gotta love it!
Jeff....I would imagine that you are a calm parent. I know what you mean about your wife though, it is really hard to hear your little one cry and be in pain and there's nothing you can do. It sounds like all is well now and that's a good thing.
Vicky...:cheer2: for kitchen remodeling, but it does make it difficult to pack a lunch. Are you changing the whole kitchen?
I had step class last night and 6 miles today. Now, it's time to take the kiddos to the dentist. Have a great day all and stay strong.

Good morning Lean Meaners! This week is already flying by...... I can't believe how fast this year went. :confused3

I got myself to the gym last night.......unwillingly, but I went! I am feeling tired the last few days.....need a vacation!

Jeff: Sorry to hear of the ongoing troubles at home......sending your dd PD :wizard: Sounds like she did well though......my #2 ds handles things like that better than my ds #1! I always say the second kid is alot 'hardier' than the first!

Lynn: Put some lights up for me! I love the lights, but I know if I put them up, they will never come back down! I am bad for putting the seasonal items away after the holiday. I have learned that about myself in my old age, and now I don't even try!

Well, the Christmas season is rapidly approaching.......guess I should start putting it on my radar!

Beth

Hey Everyone!

I am back from the frozen cold north and back to regular posting! I don't know how all of you who live in cold climates train for the long races.:worship: :worship: My limit of miles on the TM is 4-5 and to get outside and run in anything less than 30 degrees I think would be horrible.

Weight is bouncing all over the place, so I am probably going to wait a week before weighing myself again.

I did ok with food in VT, and am back on track completely this week so far. I better be since I am running my first 1/2 on Sunday!! :scared1: :scared1: So I am in a little taper this week. I've got a 5K thursday and the 1/2 on Sunday.

Sounds like everyone is doing good!

Amy

Hi Everyone!

Tracey - Congrats on your PR and your DS coming in 2nd! What a great day for you! Congrats on the weight loss too. :thumbsup2

Beth - 14 lbs since Sept - all I can say is, wow! :worship:

Lynn - We'll be putting up our Xmas lights this weekend. I hope the wind has calmed down for you to finish getting your lights up. :)

Jeff - Glad to hear your DD is doing well after her ordeal. :goodvibes

Vicky - Happy belated Canadian Thanksgiving! I love your idea of eating something before the family dinner. :thumbsup2 I might have to try that this week.

Amy - You're running 2 races this week? Wow! :woohoo: Running in the cold really isn't too bad once you get used to it. I've lived in Boston my whole life and I hate the cold. I complain when the temp dips below 70 (so I do a lot of complaining  ). I started running this past Jan, and I found that as long as I was dressed properly, it really wasn't too bad. I remember running by the bank and the temp outside read 19. I was amazed that I could run in 19 degrees and not be miserable. However, I'd still love to live somewhere warmer someday...

Maria - How's your training going? I was thinking of you at 5:00 this morning! :wave2:

As for me, I have not been doing too well with the eating, but I've been very good at getting all of my runs in. I've been able to add a little yoga in as well, so I'm happy about that. This morning, I ran 8 miles in the pouring rain, with a nice cold wind to top it off. I really didn't want to do it, and I was trying to come up with an excuse to stay in bed, but I made myself get up. I'm so happy now that I did it.

Have a great week and a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Thanks everyone, yep, the little Peanut is back to normal. She showed off her stitches to her classmates yesterday, and she said they were all looking at her chin like this  .

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Keep up with the miles, laps, minutes, hours. Don't let the feast overwhelm you.

Fewer Japanese, locals signing up for Honolulu Marathon

Travel costs, shortage of flights could put $20M dent in event

Advertiser Staff Writer
As much as they love running, thousands of Japanese residents just can't find a way to run to the Honolulu Marathon.
High cost of travel, a fuel surcharge to cover high oil prices and lack of flights have already contributed to a decline in Japanese entrants for December's Honolulu Marathon.
In preliminary figures released yesterday, total entries have dropped by more than 4,000 — more than half from Japanese entrants — which likely will put a dent of $15 million to $20 million in the $100 million in economic impact the race usually generates.
Previous economic studies of the Honolulu Marathon found that Japanese entrants bring at least one person with them to Hawai'i, spend $270 to $280 a day and stay for five days.
"All of a sudden, you don't have 2,800 to 2,900 Japanese — and they are the highest spenders," said Hawai'i Pacific University professor Jerry Agrusa, who did the previous studies. "This is a big injection of yen, cash, into the economy, especially now with the significant decrease in tourism.
"Will they spend as much as last year? We'll have to see."
There are 13,670 Japanese entries for this year's race, compared with more than 16,000 who had signed up by last November for the 2007 race.
Japanese entrants accounted for more than 17,000 of last year's 27,827 total entrants. The Honolulu Marathon, the third-largest race in the U.S., generated nearly $109 million last year, including $3.7 million in state taxes.
That figure is expected to be $85 million to $90 million this year.
"It's a larger tourism issue in terms of flight capacity from Japan, which has been going down in the last few years," said Jim Barahal, president of the Honolulu Marathon Association. "We do have, essentially, waiting lists — for lack of ability for finding a way to get here.
"We expect to see most of the economic impact is coming from Japanese visitors and Mainland and foreigners."
Flights earlier this year were more than $700, plus an additional $300 to $400 fuel surcharge. That fuel charge, which Agrusa said was somewhat of a deterrent, has since dropped.
LOVE of RUNNING

Japanese entries have long accounted for more than 60 percent of the marathon's entries. It's an event that has appealed to the Japanese, particularly the race's lack of a time limit.
Some marathons ask participants to leave the course if they haven't finished within a certain time.
Here, Barahal said, first-time entrants, who make up two-thirds of Japanese participants, have the confidence of knowing they can finish. And Japan is enjoying a boom in marathon running.
"It's very well known, our relationship with Japanese runners," Barahal said. "The Honolulu Marathon is very famous in Japan, more famous than New York or Boston. It seems to be a place to be able to finish a marathon."
Barahal still expects a late rush of entries, hoping for 1,500, with 1,000 of those coming from Japan.
Fewer local entrants
Last year's timing fiasco, which resulted in missed finishers, incorrect results and nearly two months of video review, apparently has not affected the entry numbers or loss of sponsors. In fact, Barahal said, the feedback is that the marathon handled the situation well.
"There was no fall from that except it was problems last year that I don't want to happen again," Barahal said. "It's not responsible for the drop in numbers."
The marathon raised its early entry fee for Hawai'i residents from $20 to $30, and as expected, entries dropped by 1,500 compared with November 2007.
U.S. Mainland entries have dropped slightly, while international (non-Japan) entries are up. Still, the focus is on Japan.
"The yen is doing OK. They are going to spend money," Agrusa said.

Hey Team,

I cranked out 8 miles with Guru Les, average 8:16 pace. We were flying, all on account of we hit every green traffic light. No red lights to catch my breath. Oh well, it felt good to be gliding along.

Princess #2 slipped and fell on the kitchen floor (ceramic tile), and split open her chin. 10 stitches.

The floor won that battle.

I know that she is better, but when my daughter was three she had EXACTLY the same thing happen...still has a little scar there.

Mike

I know it's a day early, but Happy Thanksgiving!

Wow, like Beth, it seems this thread really moves when I'm not around. Are you trying to tell me something?! :lmao:

Up until today, I've met all my workouts. I feel a cold coming on, and I just don't have 4 miles in me. My next scheduled workout is 6 on Saturday, so I am determined to get that in. We have car issues, so I've been doing the subway/walk thing. That's about 4 miles round trip, so even though I wasn't moving as fast or as unencumbered, I've been getting extra mileage in and I think it's finally caught up with me.

I guess we'll see how the scale is doing Saturday. I don't think November is going to be a rousing success, but it won't be a total debacle, either.

Mike -- How's the healing coming? I know you are going to be ready for that Tri, just be patient with yourself! :)

Jeff -- I'm so sorry to hear about the little princess! It sounds like you guys handled it perfectly, and she is ready to show her battle scars. Actually, hopefully there won't be any scars! :wizard:

Julie -- I'll be back training with you Saturday morning! I am pleased with my stamina, I can do much more than I could this time last year, and I'm also not completely exhausted like I was. I had yoga yesterday, and I could even stretch more, so I'm doing something right! :thumbsup2

AmyK -- Wow, you are also a running machine! I can't imagine that many races so close together! You are doing great, and what a wonderful fitness example you are setting for DD! :cutie:

Beth -- I'm with you -- I need a vacation! I'm actually taking a sick day from work today. I didn't mean to, but I woke up at 2:30 this morning sneezing and with serious drainage, so I decided to take it easy. I was going to have to do the round trip subway thing before 11 am to make it home in time for ds's half day of school, so it just wasn't worth it. I am not a fan of the half day, and they have at least one every month. :headache: On the bright side, we have another book report due Monday -- this time we are creating a cereal box which reflect the book they read. The bright side is dh agreed to do this one. I think he sees how beat I am!

Tracey -- Step class sounds like fun! Taking the kids to the dentist, not so much! :sad2:

Vicky -- Shopping was awesome! I couldn't believe the deals that were already out there. I had a 15% off coupon at the Disney Store, and they have 25% off storewide. For some reason that added up to a 37.5% discount, but I was happy to take it! I saved $46.99, and I took care of several kids on my list. Miss Vicki's (hey, are you secretly a lingerie mogul?!) had their secret garden toiletries buy 7 for $35 get one free, plus I had a $10 off coupon. I got 8 products for $25, so I also took care of my smil and smom. I also had 15% off at Lindt, plus buy $25 get 25 truffles free. And the orange/milk truffles were half price. I hit the stocking jackpot! I am looking forward to Black Friday. I'm not going anywhere, but B&Bodyworks has this great tote filled with full size products for $15 with $40 purchase, and I have a $10 off and free shipping coupon. I'm going to take care of my nieces and then be almost ready for Christmas! :santa:

Lynn -- I envy you! DH doesn't want to see a single decoration until after Thanksgiving. That means ds and I have all day to get everything out, but I wish I already had the lights done! :goodvibes

Dave, Connie, Wendy, Lisa, Jeanne, Debra, Vic, Howard, Cindy, Stacie -- Wow, those of you we've heard from are doing well, I hope everyone else is, too! Some super stellar weight loss, some great family times coming up, and some determination shining through -- all the Lean Meaners are on track! :cheer2: :woohoo: :yay: :dance3:

Maria :flower3:

Hi Lean Meaners! My kitchen renos are almost done! Yay! They just have to put on the wall tiles and adjust the water connections to the fridge and dishwasher and we're set! The house smells like Home Depot though - wood, glue and paint. Yech!

Tracey - We're changing pretty much everything in our kitchen, except for the floor. I have no idea why that got left out.

Maria - You and I would get along so well! I loved your shopping report! I wish we had a VS in Canada - we can only order through the catalogue which is okay except for the hideous shipping charges :scared1: Very cool that the Disney store discount worked out to 37.5%!!

Amy - Good luck on your 1/2 this Sunday :cheer2:

Beth - I hear ya on the vacation! I could use another one myself but I'm out of days until January. D'oh!!

Julie - That's awesome you did the 8 miles in the rain! I'm not sure I would have made it out in the cold rain. WTG!

AFM - I've gained 1.5 pounds since last week :headache: I'm hoping it was just from the big dinner I had on Sunday night. Well, it's definitely going to be a treat free week for me. Gotta get back on track!!

Have a great day everyone!!
