Does anyone know much about detoxing your liver? I've been told things lately about detox and have heard of people doing it but know nothing about it. I've been taking a new supplement that is supposed to help but wanted some opinions/advice from those that know something. So can anyone help? Thanks!

My belief is that you shouldn't use any kinds of supplements to detox. If you eat whole real all natural/organic foods you will detox your liver and colon.

You can use lemon in your water - lemon is a wonderful detox for your liver. Also I've heard that some people will mix olive oil with lemon and maybe a few other natural whole food type things to help the process.

Also - these people that go on liquid fasts to detox their colons/and or liver's are crazy. I don't believe starving your body of food is good for your system. I read something the other day where someone said a 21 day juice diet is good for you - that is so full of it. Your body needs protein and fat - 21 days of juice and I'd be in some type of coma from lack of protein and my blood sugar would be screaming. Your body isn't meant to handle only sugar like that and your insulin levels would be out of wack.

I'd look into lemon and maybe something else that is supposed to cleanse your liver. There are foods that are good for your liver and others that create inflamation. But please, just keep it natural and don't take pills.

I've not tried it. I have trouble adding chemicals to help me get through something. Somehow, it just doesn't seem like a long term health idea to me. Pretty much, I've not seen much supporting too many of the chemical "assistants" to weight loss other than Alli.

Thanks for the responses. I'm against using chemicals too. In fact, my entire house is as chemical -free as I can get it. No bleach, Lysol, ammonia, etc. We have been so much healthier. The supplement I am taking is just an herbs and algae type of deal. I wouldn't even take something prescribed so maybe I'm crazy to take this. IT is not supposed to cause weight loss, but is supposed to help clean out my liver.

Glad to hear that it's not a drug or something not good for you. I'm the same way about stuff I use. Even my toothpaste and deodorant are all natural, lol.

Probably herbs and algae are ok. Have you done much reading on them? I'd be curious to know what they are. I did some reading on whole foods that detox your liver a few weeks ago. I'm going to start using lemon in my water in the morning (warm). Its supposed to be good for your liver. Most stuff I saw was for products -yuck!

I did something similar a year ago called lemonde diet aka master clease... you can google either lots on it. Honestly, It began as a weight loss strategy but the more I read about it the more I wanted to do it for the cleasing process. I managed to do it for 7 days! lost 13 pounds of course gained it all back the next week but, it was a good experience and I definitly cleansed! Surprisingly i was not hungry and learned alot about my eating habits! My only suggestion is research before you do any kind of detox! For instance I read post from people that had done this and most said do it at a time when your home alot aka near a bathroom lol. etc. good luck

Something I heard Jillian Michaels say today as I was listening to one of her old podcast's from her radio show is that cleanses also mess with the good bacteria in your body. It upsets the balance. I'm just not convinced they are good for you. I still think switching to eating healthy foods and using water and lemon (warmed) is the most sensible.
Dandelion root tea is also supposed to help your liver.

Frankly, detoxing is complete bunk. Your body is perfectly capable of doing this itself and these things do absolutely nothing for you and can be very unhealthy. Detxo diets have absolutely no scientific evidence to back them up, and are considered dangerous by most medical professionals. The weight loss you experience is water weight, and it will quickly come back. Click here for an article about detox. If it's something you want to try, you at least need to be well informed.

If you want to lose weight or be healthier, eat a balanced diet and get some exercise. Shortcuts won't help.

I hope this doesn't come across as too harsh, I just feel like these things prey upon innocent people who are simply trying to make themselves healthier, and they are based on junk science.

I so totally agree with all this!!

The best way to detox is to go all organic and unprocessed for 1 month, avoid anything microwaved and drink lots of filtered water. If you are not putting anything bad in, your body can handle getting the bad out on its own.

Here are some links my doc sent me on microwaves.

I've been meaning to do some research on microwaving. I've heard bad things about it in passing a few times, but never had time to research. I could easily cut it out at home, but at work - how the heck would you heat your leftovers.

I was reading the raw food detox by Natalia Rose. It is was very interesting but I have not tried it fully. I did do fruit all morning for awhile and some of the combining but never full effort and surprisingly did notice some difference.

My friends and I all tried Colonix and it honestly did nothing. We would have been better off with just a fiber supplement! Not worth the money and hassle, IMHO! :)
