Weight issues and bathing suits/bikinis?

Even when I was 112 lbs (I had an eating disorder in high school) I still felt uncomfortable showing my stomach and thighs. I ended up wearing board shorts over my bikinis then. The poster who mentioned that women have insecurities no matter who they are is absolutely right.

I definitely wouldn't feel comfortable in a bikini now, either. I was just wondering if I'd draw more attention to myself wearing a bathing suit that didn't cover my bottom half or if I were swimming in shorts. I always feel like whichever I do, I look silly. I need to just do whatever is more comfortable to swim in and not worry - odds are my BF is the only one who will be looking at me anyway! ;)

Actually, I think that it is more like, no one will be looking at you, because they are all worried about themselves!

That's the key I think. If a woman is comfortable in a bikini go for it. However if she's comfortable in a tankini, one piece or leotard, that's OK too. We all just need to go with whatever works for us.

I know, easier said than done.

That is so true! ::yes::

Hmmm. . . I want to word this correctly. .
At the pool, I see women who look fantastic in their bikinis. However, I often see women wearing bikinis that are quite a bit overweight--sometimes truly obese. Personally, I don't understand how they are comfortable wearing these kinds of suits when they are really as heavy as they are. But, they do.

My daughter and I discussed this the last time we were there. She was wondering if the really overweight women wearing little bikinis believed they looked great/sexy, or if they didn't care how they looked and just wanted to feel comfortable.

I realize this might be a bit politically incorrect, but we were wondering this.

I would definitely NOT wear a bikini. First, I'm definitely not what I consider thin enough. Secondly, I'm over 40 and I personally think that even if I was thin enough, I just wouldn't be comfortable with it at my age.

That said, I guess it really is up to each individual as to what they do. Just because I have hang-ups, doesn't mean I have to put them on someone else, right? I tend to think that heavier women who wear bikinis must just be really comfortable with themselves.......more power to em!

Most people are too concerned about themselves to really worry (or notice) about what someone else is wearing/doing.

Im 32 5'7 and size 10, and large framed. I have a wobbly tum off 3 babies and I will be wearing my bikini so I can get a tan on my tummy. :confused3 I say wear whatever you are comfortable in and stuff what everyone else thinks. Go to the pool bar and have a frozen pina colada first then you wont care whatever anyone thinks anyway :rotfl: :thumbsup2

I think a lot depends on how you carry the weight.

A woman who is 5'10" is probably going to wear an eight or ten, unless she's basically anorexic, simply because at 5'10" the entire bone structure is proprotionately larger. A 4'11" woman who needs a size eight or ten is probably carrying some extra weight.

IMHO there are VERY few women over 25 who should be in a bikini, let alone a string bikini.

I would rather see an overweight woman in a well fitting, attractive full coverage tankini or one piece suit than a skinny 60 year old in a bikini.

Well said, Ducklite!

I don't wear any bathing suit to look sexy for someone else! Yikes! I didn't teach my daughters to either. I think that a person ought to wear what they are comfortable and feel good about themselves wearing. I feel perfectly happy in my one piece, or tankini, as I trip thru my forties.

I know there is one gal at our pool that many would say should not be in a bikini (but she wears one), but she is kind, joyful, and friendly, and has a great tan! Her personality shines thru, and she is beautiful for it.

I don’t like my body, nor am I confident enough to wear a bikini. However, who cares if someone who is 95 pounds or 395 pounds wears a bikini? It constantly amazes me that as a society we have bought into the whole, “you must be this thin, this age, or this tone” to wear something. I would think that as adult women we would have grown past the same judgmental behavior commonly found in teenage girls.

You'll be pleasantly suprised when you get to WDW pools / waterparks, etc and see - everyone is just average, everyday people. No supermodels, and movie-star-looks. Just "moms" - everyday average women.

Imagine walking through the grocery store, mall, anywhere - and everyone was in a bathing suit. Fat, Skinny, Black, White - any size and shape imaginable..... that's how it is there, too. Honestly.

There was 1 time when I recall a "supermodel" at the waterparks. It was a girl - maybe 17/18-ish. Grown Men, lifeguards, Fathers were oogling her. I wanted to throw up - BUT, she was wearing a white suit - and her body was *banging*! However, if I were her Mom (which she was with) I would'a never let her put that thing on. WHITE... use your imagination.

I don't know if there is an age or weight that is *appropriate*. I am 5'7" and 142 lbs. In clothes, I think I look pretty good and I can wear a lot of form-fitting stuff BUT I have not exercised in a few years and I do have some "rolls" around my stomach (too much ice cream). I would NOT put on a bikini because *I* am not comfy with my rolls flopping about. I would wear a tankini or a one-piece.

Yesterday, I was at the beach and more people had on bikinis than ever. I could tell lots of them were young moms because they had toddlers with them. Most of them looked pretty good. I wouldn't say they were "rail thin" but they were toned and their stomachs were flat and they looked fine. I have no idea what size they were.

So I guess my point is that size and age don't really matter, but if you are in shape and take good care of yourself and don't have flab rolling all over the place, it's probably going to be fine.

Last time I went to the beach around here, I was one of the only women not in a bikini! I'm glad there will be other regular people like me.

As for the girl in the white suit, that's terrible. IMO when you can see "nippular areas" or worse, it's inappropriate. Mom should have known that.

I think it really depends on how you're built. I'm 5' 9" and size 6/8. I look much better in a bikini than I do in a one-piece, believe it or not. It's just the way my body is shaped. It took me a long time to get up the nerve to actually wear one though :rotfl: . Anyway, wear what makes you feel comfortable...if someone says "Omg, I can't believe SHE is wearing THAT," then they're the ones with the issues...not you.

I have a friend that had her stomach stapled as she was around 350 lbs and out of control on her eating. She is now probably a size 8 and does wear a bikini now. Trust me when I say she probably should not wear a bikini now either. She looks great with clothes on. But the loose skin left over and the fact that she is pushing 50. Funny thing is she knows she doesn't look good in a bikini but does not care. So again another person that is comfortable wearing something that others would not. ;)
