I need some suggestions of what to do with my dress. What did... or what do you all plan to do? :cutie:

You know, I have no idea what I will do with mine. Part of me wants to keep it for my daughter.. but I don't think it will be her style. So, I'd be curious to see what other's opinions are also!

Mine is sitting in the closet in it's bag, still dirty after almost 4 years (bad I know). I'm keeping it for sentimental reasons.

I paid the $125 to have it preserved...we all dream that our own daughter will wear it someday!
If you do not want to keep it I would list it on ebay or find a wedding consignment shop.

Well, I'm torn between just keeping it in a closet for sentimental reasons, or making something from the fabric...like a quilt, or another display piece that I can frame...but part of me is a little nervous about doing that to such an expensive dress.

I still have mine after 10+ years and intend to wear it for our VR in December (I'm so sentimental!). I designed it and had a local tailoress make it for me, but I'm thinking of adding some hidden Mickey's to the full skirt, in pearls so it's subtle but so Disney at the same time. I'm currently on a diet to get back into it, as I have put on lots of weight in the past decade.
I didn't have it cleaned for a couple of years (I know - shame on me:guilty: ) but it cleaned up perfectly when I eventually got around to it. I now have it in a cotton bag to let it breathe, in my spare wardrobe, with one of those lavender scented anti-moth hanger's.

I'm planning on preserving mine and possibly wearing it for a future VR, or saving it for a future daughter. I've heard of some people making their child's christening gown out of their wedding dress, and I think that's a good idea as well.

Moonpie- I think your idea of making a quilt or something would be great. You are so talented and creative that I'm sure it would be lovely :)

I am planning to keep mine and have it preserved. My mom kept hers and although I am not wearing it I love that I actually got a chance to see my moms actual dress and who knows.....maybe my sister will wear it!!

Is hanging it okay? I had read somewhere that hanging it for a long time can eventually stretch it out of shape or form.

Thank you! I think that's what I may do! I think that a large shadow box frame, with some creative quilting, and some wedding photographs, with our invitation in it might what I'll do! I guess I'll just make sure I've got a lot of photographs of it while it's still in one piece. :3dglasses

I'd not heard that. I guess it is kind of touching the base so that will support it a little. I can't fit into it yet, so can't tell if it's no longer in shape! Actually, I think it has like corsett type 'boning' in the top so that would probably keep it in shape?
Oh well, if it isn't OK then that would be the perfect excuse to buy a new dress:laughing:

Everyone mentions saving it for a VR... but.. do you really think you will be able to fit into your dress that far down the road? I sure hope I can... but i dont know if i'd bet on it! Im keeping mine for sentamental reasons-- but I love Moonpie's idea of making it into something special!

We have an apartment that is far from big!! lol, my dress is currently squished in the bag and forced under our bed! Its such a shame because I LOVE my dress. I dont want to sell it or get rid of it, because I love it, but I dont know what to do with it! I guess preserving it would be a good idea--does anyone know how much that usually runs? (of course, i know it depends on the shop!!) Thanks!

When we did our MK photo shoot, the photographer suggested turning it into lingerie. Sounds like a good idea but I dont know if I could fathom tearing it apart! lol!

I had mine preserved. I'm not sure what I plan to do with it in the future, but I love the idea of a christening gown (well, baby dedication gown since I'm Baptist). I'm not sure if I'll be able to have someone cut it up that soon, though.

If it makes any of you feel better, a friend of mine did wear her mother's dress. It was simple and strapless. It was very nice.

I had mine cleaned and perserved. It's in the box under the bed at my parents house. I have no idea what I'll do with it. I may wear it for a vow renewal.

I have a friend that just had a baby. She took her dress to a dressmaker and they made a baptism dress/bonnett/booties for the baby out of it. I went with her to the initial designing/measuring session and it was a wonderful experience. She was able to pick out different aspects of her gown that she wanted in her little girls dress, where the beading and such would go, type of sleeves, etc. It was approx $100 to have to baptismal outfit made and definitely worth every penny. The dressmaker had a quite a bit of fabric left over that she gave back to my friend. There will be enough left that she can take it back and have a first communion outfit made when the time comes!

love that idea! how special! I am just going to keep mine in my closet, and hopefully one day my little girl that I dont have yet (haha) can play dress up and just have fun with it. I dont want to be all uptight about it, maybe i will cut mine up one day and make it into something, like a flowergirl dress?

I am going to wear my mother's gown - she designed it herself 35 years ago but unfortunately she couldn't afford to have it preserved it the time so it has been folded in a box in a closet. It was one of those things she always talked about she wished she had done. When we were teenagers, my best friend and I dug it out and tried it on and I knew from then I wanted my mother's gown for my wedding.

I guess my mom thought I would change my mind because she was so thrilled when I asked for her dress so I can get it cleaned and repaired and altered. Even if I had been thinking about looking at other dresses, seeing how happy my mom was that I wanted her dress would have sealed it for me.

I am definitely having the dress cleaned and preserved after my wedding - and giving it back to my mom. She can keep it for one of her grandchildren or just let them play with it, I'll leave it up to her.

Danni ~ That's such a sweet idea! I can't imagine how happy your mom will be watching you walk down the aisle in her dress!!
