I didn't have it cleaned for a couple of years (I know - shame on me) but it cleaned up perfectly when I eventually got around to it. I now have it in a cotton bag to let it breathe, in my spare wardrobe, with one of those lavender scented anti-moth hanger's.
Moonpie- I think your idea of making a quilt or something would be great. You are so talented and creative that I'm sure it would be lovely![]()
Is hanging it okay? I had read somewhere that hanging it for a long time can eventually stretch it out of shape or form.
I have a friend that just had a baby. She took her dress to a dressmaker and they made a baptism dress/bonnett/booties for the baby out of it. I went with her to the initial designing/measuring session and it was a wonderful experience. She was able to pick out different aspects of her gown that she wanted in her little girls dress, where the beading and such would go, type of sleeves, etc. It was approx $100 to have to baptismal outfit made and definitely worth every penny. The dressmaker had a quite a bit of fabric left over that she gave back to my friend. There will be enough left that she can take it back and have a first communion outfit made when the time comes!

I am going to wear my mother's gown - she designed it herself 35 years ago but unfortunately she couldn't afford to have it preserved it the time so it has been folded in a box in a closet. It was one of those things she always talked about she wished she had done. When we were teenagers, my best friend and I dug it out and tried it on and I knew from then I wanted my mother's gown for my wedding.
I guess my mom thought I would change my mind because she was so thrilled when I asked for her dress so I can get it cleaned and repaired and altered. Even if I had been thinking about looking at other dresses, seeing how happy my mom was that I wanted her dress would have sealed it for me.
I am definitely having the dress cleaned and preserved after my wedding - and giving it back to my mom. She can keep it for one of her grandchildren or just let them play with it, I'll leave it up to her.
