Wedding Dresses

my advice is to take some friends or family and try on the dresses for them. Could help.

Unfortunately, it can backfire, too. I took my mom, sister, and future MIL with me wedding dress shopping. I knew what kind of dress I had in mind, but everyone I tried on my mom and MIL shot me down. My mom asked me to try on a dress that SHE thought I'd look good in...she and my MIL both cried. I thought "this isn't what I had in mind, but if this is what looks good on me, I better go with this". My sister asked if I was SURE because this wasn't anything like what I had wanted...but I said "yes".

Well, a few months later at my first fitting, I put it on and sat in the dressing room crying. I just hated it. It wasn't at all what I wanted. You should see the photos of me from that day...I look so sad. To this day (9 years later)when I look at our photos all I think of is how much I hate that dress.

Sooo, my advice, definitely take some people with you, to help you...but don't let them talk you into anything. It's too important a decision to let others make it for ya! ;)

Here is what I would do - bring a digital camera when you are trying them on, develop the pictures, take a look at how you look in each one, and then decide.

I had a dress with a butt bow - enough said!

I didn't have that moment with my dress, but with my shoes! :lmao: I was so excited to find them. I hate white shoes, I think they look awful unless they're strappy (I had no intention of baring my toes). Since my dress had some silver embroidery on the bodice, I decided that silver would be great. I looked and looked for nice silver shoes everywhere and finally found THE perfect pair of sparkly embroidered silver slingbacks at DSW.

Yup.... I had the moment.... when I saw the dress in a magazine.

I had been dress shopping for a short time off and on. But I really wanted to get married in pale PINK. Pink is my color. I look washed out in white and ivory (I am a natural blonde).

DSIL showed me an article she had torn from a bridal magazine about "colored" gowns. In this article were a handful of pink gowns (some VERY pink, most pale pink). I like several of them, but I KNEW which one was really me. I called the manufacturer who gave me the name of a bridal shop about an hour or so from my parents house that carried their stuff. I called them that day. Believe it or not they had ONE gown in the style I liked, but it was ivory and it was already sold.... but they told me if I could get there before the bride came in to start alterations, I could try it on.

I went the next day with my Mom and my cousin (my MOH). While the ivory looked rather dreadful on me, I knew the dress style was ME. We took Polaroids, since I knew I wouldn't be able to come back and try it on again. I asked the bridal shop to order a fabric swatch of the pink to be sure it wasn't TOO pink. Meanwhile I continued to look at other dresses.

When the fabric swatch arrived I loved the color so I went ahead and ordered the dress (it was $100 more than what I had planned to spend on my entire outfit, including veil and shoes so I ended up making my own veil and it was beautiful!).

When the dress arrived I decided it looked pinker than I had anticipated.... because it had a darker pink lining. So I had the bridal shop tear out the dark pink lining and replace it with white. And then it was perfect.

I will say, that you will probably know it when you see it. Good luck.........P

I tried on 3. The third one was the look that I wanted at the price that I wanted. I don't know if I can say it was a big "aha" moment, but when I put it on, I said to the lady "this is it".

I had the moment....but it was when I met my husband! Literally, left a college meeting with a friend and said, "If I get him, he's the one forever".

The dress part was MUCH harder. I went out with my mom, aunt, and cousin soon after we got engaged (in August). Didn't find anything (I'm super petite, and I think I was in a "2" at the time....all the dresses were huge! All of the samples were like sizes 8-12, and it was hard to get a feel for how it would actually be! Don't worry, not a "2" now!!!!:lmao: ). We started talking about eloping....didn't want the drama of wedding, college graduation, interviewing, moving, etc. Around January, MIL to be caught wind of the eloping, and poo hit the fan! So, I went dress shopping again on MLK day. Wasn't sure.....didn't get the style I wanted (strapless, sheath) since I thought I'd have a problem keeping it on (woohoo, sure DH wouldn't mind ),and got a different dress. I had to keep it simple, the foofie stuff didn't work on me. And too much stuff on the bottom wouldn't have worked, it would have been chopped off to make it short enough for me.

Fast forward a few years, went shopping with my cousin (same as above), I was pg with the twins (about 31 weeks, delivered them 3 weeks later). Several of the shops we walked into thought I was the bride!!!! Started leading me to the maternity dresses!! You guys, by that point, I was bigger around than I was tall!!! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:
