Webcam at Disney World

I think it would be cool if Disney would place live webcams around the resorts and parks.

They used to have a number of live webcams at WDW, but they took them down in 2001. Many people think it was an overreaction to 9/11, but there was never an official explaination. They were fun to look at and helpful at gauging crowds.

They used to have webcams mounted at the parks - my favorite was the one mounted on top of the train station at the entrance of the Magic Kingdom. It looked straight down Main Street to the castle.

They probably got sued by someone who didn't want their child to be seen on the internet.

Webcams usually are not strong enough to show faces and are placed up high to show a wider area. A cam down main street would be nice.

I was not aware that there ever were any webcams at DisneyWorld. They weren't too common back in 2001, so that does suprise me.

I deal with the DL PR people all the time, and I have mentioned what a good idea a webcam would be, and they say they agree, but that corporate brass would never agree to it. Disney likes to control everything, and if something happened in front of the webcams, and you know people would be recording them, they could not control it.
Even when TV crews go to Disney now, Disney provides the camera and photographer so they can control what is shot. We filmed some shows at DL back in 1980, and back then they had an escort with every camera to make sure you didn't shoot something they did not want shot. They used to also have a restriction on not using more than 30 seconds of running sound either, and they would require any video that you needed shot beyond 30 seconds to be silent. But I think that had to do with a performance clause in the union muscians contract. If you used more than 30 seconds, the musicans expected you to pay them.

Now days with all the personal cams and cell phone cameras if something happens it's gonna find it's way on the net anyway. Something they will never be able to control all you have to do is go yo youtube. Maybe we can get the emails rolling in to them and see if can put the bug in their ear to reconsider.

Quiet please. Or Disney will do what almost all museums, etc. do.
No cameras or cellphones allowed to be on.

I don't see that happening from a place that so heavily advertises Letting the memories begin and pictures are so important to family memories.

It may be more due to copyright issues (union or not). No more than thirty seconds is the generally agreed to standard (though it is not codified in law) at which you may generally exhibit another work without concern for copyright royalties. This is the reason that preview clips on on-line music stores are limited to 30 seconds. That also would apply to background music. Additionally, Disney licenses a lot of works it uses in their own parks/resorts and has to be careful about violating those agreements.

On top of the good argument that there's no expectation of privacy at WDW and a webcam isn't commercial use, the only webcam that came close to being able to get a good look at kids' faces was the one that they had in the "Bone Yard" playground at AK.

The likely cause of the webcams' demise was the post-9/11 security paranoia that swept the land right after the attacks. Not long after the event, the webcams went off-line and a placeholder message said that they were down for "maintenance" and would be back.... after a while the pages were deleted.

...me too! But then, I'd never get any work done......*sigh*
I loved the time lapse replays of the previous day. It was fun to watch the whole day go by in 60 seconds!

I remember the one in Hollywood Studios as well. Those webcams were always good for a quick WDW 'fix'! :goodvibes

I just thought it would be nice to be able to see the parks through out the day
and at different times. See the crowd level during any given week or month.
Or when you need a Disney fix.
