They probably got sued by someone who didn't want their child to be seen on the internet.
I was not aware that there ever were any webcams at DisneyWorld. They weren't too common back in 2001, so that does suprise me.
I deal with the DL PR people all the time, and I have mentioned what a good idea a webcam would be, and they say they agree, but that corporate brass would never agree to it. Disney likes to control everything, and if something happened in front of the webcams, and you know people would be recording them, they could not control it.
Even when TV crews go to Disney now, Disney provides the camera and photographer so they can control what is shot. We filmed some shows at DL back in 1980, and back then they had an escort with every camera to make sure you didn't shoot something they did not want shot. They used to also have a restriction on not using more than 30 seconds of running sound either, and they would require any video that you needed shot beyond 30 seconds to be silent. But I think that had to do with a performance clause in the union muscians contract. If you used more than 30 seconds, the musicans expected you to pay them.
Now days with all the personal cams and cell phone cameras if something happens it's gonna find it's way on the net anyway. Something they will never be able to control all you have to do is go yo youtube. Maybe we can get the emails rolling in to them and see if can put the bug in their ear to reconsider.
Quiet please. Or Disney will do what almost all museums, etc. do.
No cameras or cellphones allowed to be on.
It may be more due to copyright issues (union or not). No more than thirty seconds is the generally agreed to standard (though it is not codified in law) at which you may generally exhibit another work without concern for copyright royalties. This is the reason that preview clips on on-line music stores are limited to 30 seconds. That also would apply to background music. Additionally, Disney licenses a lot of works it uses in their own parks/resorts and has to be careful about violating those agreements. They used to also have a restriction on not using more than 30 seconds of running sound either, and they would require any video that you needed shot beyond 30 seconds to be silent. On top of the good argument that there's no expectation of privacy at WDW and a webcam isn't commercial use, the only webcam that came close to being able to get a good look at kids' faces was the one that they had in the "Bone Yard" playground at AK.They probably got sued by someone who didn't want their child to be seen on the internet.

I would love to see a webcam on Main Street.
I loved the time lapse replays of the previous day. It was fun to watch the whole day go by in 60 seconds!...me too! But then, I'd never get any work done......*sigh*
There used to be a link on Mousesavers under Freebies to WDW mainstreet cam. But it was a recording and not live, and it was a loop.
...they faked us out???!?!?!![]()
