Umbrellas are not a good idea at Disney. Between the hazard to those nearby because of the points on the edges of the umbrella being at eye level, blocking views of others during parades/fireworks/etc, and being ineffectual during windy conditions, its best to just go with ponchos.

The only issue with umbrellas is potential crowd sizes... at a low density time of year, they're a good choice. During Christmas/New Years, they'd be like thousands of ninja spears twirling around at eye level...

I agree with this. Umbrellas are a huge safety concern, especially in moderate crowds. Wear a poncho instead.

We go with an umbrella, and depending on crowd level you need to be respectful of others. Be carful not to poke someone in the head and not to redirect water on them. I just can not do a poncho. I do have them in my backpack but I don't use them. In the summer months they can be more of a PPSD (personal portable sauna device). They get hot and damp under the plastic, they just stick to the skin making it worse to wear. I just rather get wet then have that on.

Being short, I often get other people's rain dumped on me from their umbrellas. It's not intentional, but the water has to go somewhere down and I'm the one down there I especially don't like older kids with umbrellas, because they often don't seem to be considerate of others. Getting poked in the glasses (thank goodness for that) is not fun.

I guess but we have managed just fine, even during busy Christmas time 2 weeks ago. No one harmed

Rain ponchos (I buy them at local dollar store and take several), baseball cap for under the poncho hood (especially if you wear glasses), personal sized umbrella that folds, extra socks, and plastic bag to store wet items as needed on the attractions.
