I'm realistic about not being able to control weather but we fly down Tuesday morning for an 8 day stay and I'm seeing thundershowers all but 2 days. Rain i can handle. But thunder and lightening??! Anyone else have a plan or experience for how the adapt their trip itineraries and expectations especially with little kids?

Just find shelter for a little while or poncho up and keep on keepin' on. Thunderstorms are normal, usually brief and in the afternoon, and often localized. Floridians know this is the normal forecast most every day in the summer, every summer, every year.

This is FL. I've lived here my whole life. It will rain in the afternoon, with possibly thunder and lightening. The mornings are usually nice, the afternoons around 3ish (give or take) will usually bring on the storms, till about early evening. And it's usually spotty too, meaning it could rain hard for 20 minutes, then drizzle, then rain hard again etc. Then it clears up at night. It's just the way it is. Usually till the end of September, early October.

Good news is, it's not like it will rain all day. It's usually just a few hours in the afternoon. Good time to go back to the hotel and do something else.

Was a bit of a shock to see it for every day. We went the exact sane time 4 years ago and only rained 1 night in the wee hours when everyone was sleeping. The forecast rainfall most days is 1-2 or 5mm but the day we arrive and night of our MNSSHP ticket is 25-30mm rain. That's several hours of rain.

Is it possible to switch your ticket to a different date? I think i recall no refunds. And of course our trip has planned to a T with ADRs at very hard to get restaurants for the other party nights (1990 park fare and akershus)... :(

It's the fact of late afternoon evening that concerns me as i'm sure murphy's law that is what likely to happen Sep 24 our arrival day when we were only planning on going to the park 4:30pm for MNSSHP. Boo.

Rain forecasts are notoriously unreliable more than a day or two out, and you're looking ahead 3+. It may rain, it may not. It may rain at Epcot and not in MK, or it may rain in MK and not Epcot. The weather is just too unpredictable to pay much attention to rain forecasts right now.

If the day of your party comes along and they are predicting a good amount of rain that night, then I would listen. That may be a good time to switch your dates. Disney may accommodate you, but they aren't under any obligation to. Ask nicely and they often come through. Have fun!

Yeah... The closer you are to the end of September, the better you'll be. Fingers Crossed!!

Thanks for your level headed responses :) we have been rained out on the few trips we've taken this summer (camping and beach) and while it's easier for grown ups to have perspective (especially for low cost trips!) it's harder for kids. And disney is no low cost trip. This is a once every 4 years trip for us. Taking the family in an all inclusive trip to the Caribbean is way cheaper lol

I would not worry about it in the least, yes it is disheartening, but storms more times then not come and then go just as quickly as they arrived.

If it does happen to lightning, just find a safe place to hang out til it passes. I would be more worried if they were predicting a full on hurricane the week you arrived. Luckily for that, is has been a quiet season so far.

On a side note, we were in Disney this past June when that TS came through and we still had a a great time. Nothing like a little rain to deter the masses from playing. The park was near empty, it was a nice treat. Unlike most I guess I am the oddball and welcome the rain for this reason alone.

I agree with the last post. We were at wdw in June and the crowds were so heavy. The rain was the only way we were able to experience some of the headliners. As soon as it starts to downpour people head out of the parks.

Of all of our trips I've taken to Orlando this June trip was the worst for rain. We've never had it that bad on our fall trips.

Pick up some disposable rain ponchos from Walmart before your trip and wear flip flops and just enjoy the low crowds!

. . . Rain i can handle. But thunder and lightening??! . . .

1) You never know when/about the afternoon Florida thunderstorms.
2) It is rainy season, so expect rains.
3) For lightning, do like Lee Trevino, the golfer.
. . . try carrying a golf club
. . . as he said, "Even God can't hit a one-iron." :cool1:

Just make sure you have your ponchos handy. Murphy's Law says if you leave the ponchos in the room it will rain, but if you have them with you, it won't. At least that's how it works for me! :rotfl: The only times I have been soaked with rain are when I either didn't bring anything or thought a tiny umbrella would be enough.

We're still in the rainy season for about another month, and of course the tropical risk lasts until the end of November. It's just a fact of life. Typically you can dodge the worst of it by heading into a restaurant or theater type attraction and it will be done when you come out.

My suggestion, bring an extra poncho for stroller, wheelchair, ecv if you have any of these. You often have to park them outside in the rain. We had rain on our last trip, we did okay, got to ride a lot, the parks were empty. :cool1:

We just got back from WDW. Right before we left dh & I were looking at the forecast feeling disheartened b/c every single day showed thunderstorms. Not just rain. We were there last year in September and had some pretty big storms with lightening and rides were shut down, parades delayed, etc. We thought we were in for that again. Turns out it only rained a teeny bit while we were there and it was usually while we were sleeping or inside a store. Seriously, the little bit of rain we experienced was a non-issue completely. So, like others have said, don't trust the forecast too far out and know the rain that does fall is usually brief and scattered. Have a great trip!

We were there last week. Our weather forecast had at least a 30 percent chance of rain everyday but it only rained once in eight days. Even that day it was only for an hour or two. We carried our ponchos everyday just in case but barely needed them. The one time it did rain the park nearly cleared out so we loved it. We did forget the extra one for the stroller and it did get wet so i have to remember that next time. The kids loved the rain, they thought it was fun to put on ponchos
