Wearing white on DCL?

Love it! Coffee isn't a problem for my family but darn that pasta sauce:duck:
My 5yo DS only hugs me when I'm wearing white. And he's been eating chocolate. ;)

Actually, I wore a white skirt today. But I've lived in FL my whole life and the idea of switching to dark colors now seems kind of crazy.

Go for it on the cruise. I'm sure you'll look lovely and stylish!

Actually here in New England, it's a matter of practicality. Between the rain, salt and snow, your shoes and pants would no longer be white. We also don't wear open toed shoes in the winter although I've tried! If you don't have those factors working against you, there's no reason not to! Growing up in San Diego I wore white all year round. So I would say go for it! I've already packed white pants for my cruise this week! Enjoy!:)

Go for it! This rule really doesn't apply in FL! I am packing white shorts for our cruise in 2 weeks.

The cruise staff and officers wear white year round. Why shouldn't the passengers?

^This exactly! I wear white year round, along with shorts and flip flops 24/7!

i look at it as to WHY not to wear white after labor day. after that time, it gets more rainy and yucky and white pants/shoes could be ruined. i just returned from a bahamian cruise and wore white pants but i waited for the day it wasn't raining so my shoes wouldn't flip dirty water up onto my (linen) white pants.

I live in Texas and I definitely wear white year round. My mother thinks it's appalling, however, and likes to cite the rule to me all the time! But then again, she wears socks with sandals, so...

Trying to plan for packing, wondering what your thoughts are about wearing white after Labor Day for our Oct. Caribbean cruise??

Winter white pants....yes.
White shoes NO!!!

We also switched to black patent leather after labor day and fresh white shoes for Easter.

That being said most women don't wear "pumps" anymore with hose. So white leather sandals on a cruise would be ok :)

I was just curious, I was always told that wearing white after Labor Day is a no no...do people wear white/ivory on the cruise ship in the winter? Just curious, I have a beautiful dress for formal night, but, it is off white...thanks!

that's not true in so many places in the world (especially given that outside of the US, no one has ever heard of labor day - in the rest of the world, the workers' day is may day - for the communists among us)...

every hot climate i've ever been in (and i live in one) has year round white (and year round sandals and year round short sleeve shirts and year round sun and sand and fun :))

i was just thinking about this - how i tried to expain to someone here how in the US, you're not supposed to wear white after labor day and before memorial day...and they said, "what's labor day and what's memorial day?" (other places have memorial day, but not the same date as it is in the US)..
and they just couldn't get their heads around the concept of not wearing white before or after some arbitrary date...

Yes, we are from the UK and love cruising on DCL from Florida. We have heard of labor day and memorial day, but wouldn't know the exact dates, nor the traditions associated with these dates. Sorry!

I am a Dermatology Nurse, so I love the white year around!
It is much more important to me that people are wearing their SUNSCREEN! :thumbsup2

Fashion "rules" come and go all the time. When I was young, no "lady" went out without a hat and gloves--you had to wear a girdle (and my mother insisted on this even on my 5'7" 103lb body!) stockings or socks were to be worn at all times. I grew up in Houston before air conditioning. Most people now never heard of these "rules!" Thank goodness!!! People dress for comfort.

I would have made a terrible "lady." ;). I can't stand wearing closed-toe shoes. Pantyhose? I don't even wear them for weddings anymore! And gloves? I can't even keep track of our "winter" (ha ha) gloves each year. I couldn't handle having two separate wardrobes to unpack and pack each year.

Thank goodness we floridians can get away with white any time we want. That said, I truly can't remember seeing white shoes lately on a person born in my generation. Of course, I've never owned a pair of boots in my life, so my shoe fashion sense is pretty skewed toward tropical living. What do I know about the trials of northern wardrobe planning?

oh my gosh, this made me laugh, I made this post almost 4 yrs ago, proves anything can be rehashed on Dis :rotfl:

Still very strong in the south by true southern women.

It is a US tradition, wear white it will be fine.

So funny that this was asked - I just asked a couple of my friends (we live all over the US) and the only person to respond with a "no" answer is a very southern friend of mine who still to this days lives by the "no white after Labor Day". I have a pair of white jean capris that I want to bring as they would be great for an evening on the ship and I was wondering what people do. Based on this post, I will be packing them for my cruise in just over 3 weeks!!!

Maybe up north but down here in the tropics and sub-tropics including Florida rainy season is June through October so it should be don't wear white between Memorial Day and Halloween. ;)

As many have pointed out it is acceptable to wear white year 'round in the tropics - remember Mr. Roarke and Tattoo on Fantasy Island? :)

The only thing I really apply "White after labor day" rules to anymore are shoes (unless they are tennis shoes), handbags (not that I have any) and stark white dresses. I think if you pair a white dress with say a black cardigan and black flats, it works though. I will wear white shirts or skirts after labor day no problem. The shoes thing I think comes from the fact that the only dressy white shoes I've usually ever had were my Easter shoes, and it always felt a bit weird wearing Easter shoes into the fall and winter.

Cruising is a special occasion though; to be honest, I bought a dress for our September cruise next year that is a white halter style dress, but it has a very piratey look to it. Honestly, when I bought it, it didn't even occur to me that I was buying a "white after Labor Day" item. It had slipped my mind. I guess I will just be a rebel.
