If you are under 90 years old or so, this rule doesn't apply. They repealed it somewhere in the 1950's or 1960's.
...Although I still tend to not wear white shoes/handbags after Labor Day, I wear what the climate dictates. The Caribbean is hot and not wearing white is almost wrong.

I pretty much never wear white, so I don't have to worry about it! (My chances of spilling coffee on myself is directly proportionate to the whiteness of my clothing!)
