wearing headphones on rides?

My 5 year old son has Down Syndrome and has some noise sensory issues. He sometimes wears noise cancelling headphones to help out. Does WDW allow headphones to be worn on rides? I'm thinking like POC and other dark rides would be fine. Not sure if he would need them for roller coasters..or that it would be a smart idea to use them since they may fall off. Anyone have any experience with this?

My 20 year old son wore noise cancelling headphones on our trip this May and no one asked him to remove them. We did not do many of the bigger roller coasters, but he had no problems on Test Track, Mine Ride, or Splash Mountain. They did bounce around a bit on Primeval Whirl and he had to keep pulling them down, so this might be a problem on bigger rides like Space Mountain and Rock and Roll Rollercoaster which we did not do.

Have your son try them on before the trip - have him shake his head, move around a lot with them on. If they stay secure, don't slip over the face, etc, they should be fine on most rides. They would not be safe on Rock'n'Rollercoaster, as that goes upside down, twists, etc, and they would be a projectile that could do serious damage to another rider.

My son doesn't ride any roller coasters, and I agree, I wouldn't recommend them on roller coasters anyways. But on all the other slower moving rides my son wore his noise cancelling headphones on everything.

Would ear plugs work like the ones workers in construction use around loud machinery?

That's not true. These headphones are TIGHT, and very secure. They are far more secure than eyeglasses, and people wear glasses on coasters all the time.

No, not very well. First of all, those are not made for kid sized ears and they won't be very effective. I use those kind every night to sleep, and they do not block out the noise as well as the earmuff type.

My son tried to use earplugs and he was bothered by how they felt in his ears. They hurt him.

They are tight if they fit properly. But how many kids want tight headphones on? Especially kids with sensory issues? And people should not wear glasses on coasters either. Check out the Universal board or google about the people who were injured with stuff flying off of other people on coasters. It's common sense not to wear unfastened objects on coasters.

I do wear mine on most roller coaster, but not RR. I do have a zip tie on mine, so that I can clip it on my bag when I do not need them. I also use this to hold on to when on a ride like BTMRR or space

Well, my kid with sensory issues actually craves pressure, so he doesn't mind how tight they are at all. He wears them on coasters and they have never budged. And he has never been asked to remove them either.

My sister had custom sound blocking ear plugs made and absolutely loves them. She is at the point that she has to wear them almost 24/7. At disney she stacks them with head phones. She cant ride the big rides because they hurt her, but she hasnt had any problem wearing both her headphones and ear plugs on other rides. That being said even wearing both she still finds the noise intolerable for several rides. The only way we can ride is fp because she just cant stand the noise while waiting in line.
