wearing glasses on the rides

My 11 yr. old DD wears glasses. Are there any rides that she could lose them on? I could make her take them off and keep them in my purse. I heard space mountain is one of the rides that people lose glasses and jewerly on.

I have to wear glasses to walk across the room, so wear them all the time and have NEVER felt like I was going to lose them on any Disney ride.

Blizzard Beach is another story. In order to enjoy the water parks I had to get a cheap pair of contacts that corrected my vision enough to walk around the water park and I and wore goggles.

They would not let me wear the goggles on the big slides so I just closed my eyes really tight so I wouldn't lose the contacts

I wear glasses a lot at WDW now and then and I don't recall takem them off ever. Maybe not on Space Mt. but I am sure I had them on for BTM and I think even RnR. At Bilzzard Beach though, I don't think she'd be able to wear them on any slides. I wasn't in need of wearing glasses when I last went. Hopefully someone can answer that.

the only rides that i ever felt like i ever felt like i was going to lose my glasses on was rock n rollercoaster and space mountain...i am helpless without my glasses and only have one pair so i usually take them off when on those rides....

DS cannot function without his glasses. We used to put one of those glasses strings on his glasses and run it through the tag on the shirt he was wearing. I don't think they ever came lose but when he was younger we never wanted to take a chance. Now he wears contacts.

One word of advise, have a glasses repair kit in your fanny pack. His lens popped out at the beginning of e-nights one year and I didn't have one in my fanny pack. Luckly the jewelry shop on main street was open and they were able to get a screw and screwdriver small enough to fix them.

Never felt like I was losing my glasses on any of the rides and I've been on them all. If I try to ride without mine it isn't as enjoyable. Not having them on and everything really fuzzy makes me nauseated.
Now both my girls do not enjoy the water parks because they can't see well without their glasses and they don't like the water splashed in their eyes now they wear contacts. I just wear my glasses in the lazy river and bear it for the slides. It is a pain though when you really, really need them to see.

The only ride I know of that you can't wear glasses on is RNR.

I have worn glasses on the Rock 'N Roller coaster, space Mountain, Thunder Mountain, and every other ride at Disney World. I have never lost my glasses on a ride. Sometimes, I do wear a string on them just as a little extra piece of mind, but I have never lost them. Just make sure that they are secure on her face. If they are loose before your trip, take them to the place where you bought them, and have them adjusted to be secure.

One thing I suggest, though, if your daughter has an extra pair, make sure you bring them. I always travel with an extra pair of glasses and an extra pair of perscription sunglasses. One time on a vacation, I had a pair of glasses split in two, and I didn't have a spare pair, so we had call my eye doctor to get my perscription, and go to a store to get new ones. I haven't travelled with just one pair of glasses since. Sometimes, stores run sales that you can get two pairs of glasses for $99--it may be worth your while to invest in them.

My dd (9) and I always have that stringie thingie for our glasses. Now, that being said, I still took mine off on RnRC!! Next time I won't. My dd can't see 3 ft in front of her without her glasses. We got her prescription goggles for the beach/pools. We did find the first time we used WDW resort pools, that she is extremely sensitive to overheated chlorinated water!! The goggles keep the hot pool water out and the pain away. She wore her goggles at the BB but she didn't do any of the big slides. So that wasn't a problem for her. I do wear mine at the water parks tho.

the only rides I take off my glasses are on RNRC and Space Mountain!!

I bought one of the strings for glasses and just stuck the glasses inside my shirt!

u can wear glasses @ bb (except SP and SG, she will have to hold them in her hand). but be careful, they do fall off (some of the ends of the rides u might flip, or go under water), and it may take about 30mins+ for someone to come find them for you in the catch pool. so maby if you have cord so if they fall off they will stay on ur neck and wont be lost

I suggest taking her in to an optical make sure her glasses are fitted properly. Adjustments are free whether or not you got them there, usually.

I wore mine on Space Mtn and Big Thunder Mtn Railroad, because I totally forgot to take them off. The only place I had to take them off was Disney Quest when we rode the roller coaster we designed. I'd probably take them off for RnRC but nothing else.

I will bring my DD to walmart optical and have them checked before we go to WDW. I can put her glasses in my purse for the 2 roller coaster rides. We do have a second pair just in case, I will bring those with us. At BB, maybe her grandma can hold on to them while she is on the slides and rides. Her grandma cant swim and hates the water, so i dont see her going on alot of the rides at BB. Although I did tell her she has to go on SOME of them. She's 11 and has been asking for contacts. I told her when she was 13 we would look into it. I thought 11 was too young. what do you think? 11 too young for contacts? thanks.

I'm not an eye doctor but I am married to one. He has fitted children younger than your daughter with contacts with very few problems. Almost all of those problems are due to non-compliance with instructions on the care of the lenses. If she is mature enough to manage her own personal hygeine in other areas, she should be old enough to try contact lenses. The key to success is motivation. If she really wants to wear them, she'll do fine.

Many lenses today can be worn for days without removal. I wear lenses that stay in (even when I'm sleeping) for a whole month and then get thrown away. I rarely have to bother with solutions and cleanings (only when I get something in my eye and have to remove the lens to get the foreign object out). These lenses are more expensive than the traditional ones but those are the perks of sleeping with your eye doctor.

With only a few days until your visit to WDW, I would put contact lens purchases on the back burner. It will take an initial visit with the eye care professional for evaluation, a trial period with the lenses that they choose for her and then a follow up visit to ensure that she is doing well with them before they order a 6-month or 1-year supply of lenses.

On a personal note, I wore thick lenses in my glasses until I was 17. I hated those glasses but couldn't see without them. The glasses were soooo ugly and I took a lot of teasing from some very unkind classmates. I finally got contacts as a gift for high school graduation. They made all the difference in the world for my confidence about my appearance. If my own DD13 needed glasses, I wouldn't hesitate to put her into contactsright away. If for no other reason than to avoid the trauma that I experienced as a teen. Self-image for girls at that age is so important to their overall success.

I have never been to the water parks but I think common sense would dictate that glasses and water will lead to problems.

I have, however, been on every ride in WDW and, to be honest, never even thought about taking my glasses off. I never even thought about them. They never came loose or moved or anything that I remember. I think the lost glasses problem at Space mountain or other mountains are sunglasses that are moved up to the top of their heads because it is dark in some of the rides. They, I would think, would have a tendancy to fall off.

I will have to talk to her father about getting her contacts. We have no vision coverage on our insurances. Im divorced, and my ex has insurance on the kids which does not cover vision. I have medicaid on the girls as a secondary insurance. I dont know about other states but in michigan medicaid does not reimburse very well and alot of doctors offices dont accept medicaid. I work in a docs office and we are the only office in town that accepts medicaid other then the ER. The optical place that I usually took my daughter doesnt accept medicaid so I will have to take her to a different place and see if medicaid will cover contacts. Otherwise her father and I could split the cost. her b-day is in august, maybe that will be a b-day present. She is getting to the age where she is concerned about her image. she will be getting braces here pretty soon as well. she told me that the kids at school dont tease other kids about glasses and braces anymore, not like they did when I was a kid. I never wore glasses but I did have braces.

Hi,

My husband has to wear glasses and he does not put a strap on them. He has never taken his glasses off to ride any of the rides in the parks. He did take them off when he went down one of the big slides at Blizzard Beach.

I've worn glasses pretty much all my life, and I always take them off when I go on rides and to the waterparks.

For the rides, really the only ride in WDW that I take them off for are Space Mountain. But sometimes I have to hold on extra strong to them on the Safari in AK. That can get rather bumpy and has the potential for losing you glasses especially if you sit on an end seat.

I've only been to BB and TL for waterparks, but I find glasses annoying when I'm in the water. Sometimes I even leave them back at the hotel. Usually with goggles, and a combination of the water, I can see just fine. But definitely don't wear them on water slides.

My 11 y/o DS wears glasses. He took them off on RNRC and Space Mountain, just to be cautious, but didn't take them off for any other rides and never had a problem.

As far as contacts go, I'm sure it depends on the child, but they didn't work out for us. He just had an eye exam last month, and asked his doctor about contacts. The doctor gave us a pair of samples to take home and try out. DS tried for a week, and was never able to get them in. The doctor put them in before we left the office, and showed DS how to do it. He had no trouble wearing them that day or getting them out that evening, but he never could get them in by himself. His doctor said that is very common for kids this age. He said we can try again next year and the results may be much different.

My older DS (13) has braces, and my younger DS (11) has glasses, and they both say that kids don't tease about glasses and braces anymore. It's probably because a lot more kids have glasses and braces than they did when we were kids.
