Wearing Eye Patch at Disney

I understand your concern and some of the struggles you and your DD endure. We used to hear a lot of comments etc. before my son's surgeries. His alignment was very severe and people stared and commented. It always amazed me how completely insensitive SOME people could be. However, I never minded if they just politely asked out of curiousity or made comments. Recently at a OT session another boy who had not met DS yet was asking him what was wrong with his eyes and he was saying"nothing wrong with my eyes..."" I thought good for you. He has had this issue since birth and so has always learned to cope well with the challenges that can come with it. Best of luck to you and your DD.

When my daughter was 2 we were in a grocery store. She was patched and wearing glasses. A woman came up to her and said, "Oh, you poor poor baby...having to wear glasses so young." My daughter just looked at her in amazement and replied, "I not poor baby. My glasses make me see fings!" The lady turned red and walked away!!!

She has at least a bit of vision in both eyes, and is able to see clearly with her glasses on and the patch off, so she knows exactly what she is missing (and that her younger brother can see plainly which is extra hard for her sometimes), but her "bad eye" is still re-forming connections to her brain so she has to keep the patch on when we go for a week to Disney. We went a few days ago for a day trip and let her take off the patch, but her doctor has specified that it is to stay on for the full 12 hours a day when we go down later this month.

For specific attractions, this is what we learned this weekend: She loves ToT in DHS, would the GAC allow us to sit in the front row for that? We don't mind waiting until the next load of people goes or whatever. She also has never been to Ariel's Grotto, and wants desperately to see that. She was fine on TSM with 3d glasses on over her glasses and no patch, will she be able to see anything with no 3d effects? What other rides / attractions in the other parks are 3D that she won't be able to see?

Thanks so much!
I'm sorry, I misunderstood. I am an RN and do understand lazy eye. I thought you meant her vision was 'legally blind' with correction in that eye, which would mean that she could not have seen 3D in the past. I also guess I missed that she had seen those shows in the past with glasses.

Anyway, she will still see the movies clearly with the 3D glasses over her glasses and her one eye patched. The link I posted before has some information about how the 3D movies work for someone with no vision in one eye. One of the viewpoints in that thread was my son in law who had seen the movies before with good vision in both eyes and then took a trip with almost no vision in one eye (and an eye patch) because of a temporary problem. He is also an artist and explained some of the 3D effect the is due to lighting , shading and other factors. As long as your girl uses the 3D glasses over her regular glasses, she will see a clear picture. Maybe not a 'true' 3D effect, but still totally enjoyable and still different than a 'flat' movie.
As for a GAC to sit close - if her vision with correction in her unpatched eye is good, she won't need to sit close to see. Sitting close can smetimes limit your view in a way because your field of vision is much smaller and you don't see he things that are off to your side. For someone with vision in only one eye, that might mean needing to turn more. You kind of get an idea of what I'm talking about by closing one eye and the holding your hands straight out in front of you, a shoulder width apart. If you hold them very close to your body - like hands about 6 inches away from each shoulder - you will only see one hand at a time and will have to turn your head to make the other hand visible. If you place your hands in front of your shoulders, but as far away as your hands reach, you can see both hands at the same time, even with one eye closed. People who have used a GAC to sit close for shows have had variable success. Many have decided that it is not helpful for most shows anyway since you choose your own seats once the show begins. Since she will be wearing a patch, it may be easier to just talk to the CM for those shows where a CM shows you to a seat. That would include shows like Fantasmic, Indiana jones stunt show. Rather than front of theater, my suggestion would be more middle of the theater in the middle of the row to give her a bigger field if view. Don't be afraid to speak up and tell the CM what she needs. A GAC would not give specifics and you will still need to explain what she needs. The GAC just alerts the CM that there is more going on than meets the eye.

Sorry to say that she won't be able to see Ariel's Grotto that area no longer exists because of the current renovation being done in Fantasyland.

Almost forgot - each park has one 3D movie currently. There are some rumors that Star Tours in the Studio will be 3D in the future.

The Studios has the 3D ride Toy Story Mani and movie, Muppets 3D.
Epcot has Captain EO for a limited time near Imagination.
MK has Mickey's Philharmagic and AK has Bug's Life

We just got back, and just about everyone was wonderful with her! On our last day in Animal Kingdom, she and her brother got to sit in the very front for the Festival of the Lion King thanks to an amazing CM who had a similar problem when she was young, and they even got to participate in the show with the characters!

She was not allowed to use her good eye during any of the twelve hours each day she usually has it patched, so it was great for her to be able to get up close to see all the action that she loves. Even on the Tower of Terror they let us sit in the front row because it's one of her favorite rides and she adores getting to look out over the park at the top of it.

Thanks so much for everyone's helpful tips on here, they really came in handy!

Sailorgirl & others -

I was actually the OP on this, and I'm back now after a break - we are going back to Dis again next month - seems to be an every september/october thing is happening for us :)

My apologies for not revisiting this thread but I'm pleased now that I did to see so much advice and camradrie among all.

Last yrs trip with my DD was overall a good one and also a learning experience about how much she shares in common with her autistic brother and also how much she is the exact opposite from him in terms of needs. We ended up with 2 GACs. Where she needed to be close to things, he needs to be near exit doors. Where the front of a vehicle is too intense for my autistic son, it is where she needs to sit. Where he loves the 3D experiences, she doesn't see 3D at all. But hey, they both like to eat and meet the characters!!! :)

DD's amblyopia is severe and at this point it looks like the brain has turned off her left eye when she is not patching. When patching, she can use it but the vision is poor even with corrective lenses. She also has a hearing issues and some other neurological issues. She HAS to patch every day or she could go permanently blind. Even on vacation. A GAC was necessary for her both to make it easier on her as well as safer and Disney was great with her.

So great, we are going back again next month and this time even more prepared.

Just want to share this pic of my kids with DD patching and my ASD son. They could have just met characters all day every day and been thrilled.

Thanks for the report - a late report is still a good one:thumbsup2

Hellokittiemama- where did you get the princess patch? I am taking a friend and her 2 kids in Sept. The DD is 5 and wears a patch 2 hours a day under glasses. I don't know what the issue is, but having a princess patch might make it less of a battle. I know she doesn't like to wear the patch at all now.

My daughter has a large variety of patches - some are adhesive and go under her glasses, others cover over her glasses. You can see them and view links on where to buy them etc at www.amblyopiakids.com under "Fun Eye Patches for Kids". That one in the picture is from Munchkins and goes over glasses. Fresnel/MYI makes a cute one with crowns that is adhesive and pink. Feel free to PM me if you have questions.

Thank you so much! I am sending her the link now. My friend has never heard of the over the glasses patches so this will at least get her started.
