Wearing compression stockings in the parks? My DH is self-conscious.

Great thought about the lightweight pants - honestly he has always been self-conscious about wearing shorts. He doesn't wear them much and then feels like his white legs would blind everyone if he wore them :lmao: So now it just adds to his discomfort that he has to wear the compression stockings.

I don't know why I didn't think of the zip off pants too. I think that is a great solution.

And while I love the Mickey head idea, my husband is too much of an introvert to ever do anything to draw attention to himself. I am that way myself - we always said we should wear labels on our shirts that said "Caution - introvert" but we are too introverted to wear them :rotfl:.

So rather than have him feel self-conscious, we'll get him some nice pants assuming he still has to wear socks, and then he'll have that as an option.

Thanks :grouphug: I love the DIS.

What does that TV psychologist say?... "you wouldn't worry so much about what people thought of you, if you knew how little they did"

Even though I don't watch his show, I love that saying. i try to remind myself of it whenever I worry about what people will think. And I am soooo happy to hear that lots of people where crocs and don't care. Cause that's me. Life is too short to not have comfy footwear.

Here is something that might help his mind ease. I go to maine and other areas to fish a lot and the bugs are horrid. SO long pants are a must, but it is hot and you want the option of shorts if they go away. So, get a pair of zip off shorts from bass pro. They are patns and shorts, plus they are very breathable and cool. An added benefit is they wick water away, so he would actually have dry legs quicker than the person wearing normal shorts.

He could wear a kilt, then no one would even look at his hosiery

Seriously, I'd buy him at least one pair of those lightweight convertible pants, REI has their own brand that look very nice and are relatively inexpensive. If you don't have REI closeby, try any sporting goods store. This way he will have a choice, and if he gets too hot in the middle of the day he can zip off the bottoms.

I'll bet after his first day in the parks in shorts, he'll wonder why he ever worried.

I haven't read every page, but he could try these:

1. Long Jersey cotton pants. They are light and don't cling so they might be fine.
2. Man-pris! You know, those long capri length shorts that go below the knee. Then he'll just look like he's wearing long socks.
3. Speak with an accent and wear sandals. Folks will think he's European and assume it must be the cool style over there

PLEASE, we wouldn't give it a second thought. Just like people worry about a scooter, what makeup to wear, etc. The rest of us are just having our own good time and could really give a care about you and your socks! :goodvibes

How about a pair of compression socks with a tattoo design on them... like the sleeves? I wonder if there is such a thing. Then their might me reason to talk.

(off to google tattoo compression socks) (still won't look as good as my crocks with socks)

My Dad (61) wears a compression stocking on his right leg and has done since he was in his 30s. He wears shorts in the parks and it doesn't bother him displaying his "sock". I think sometimes he notices people looking but it's a human reaction, people do.
The most important thing is that he is caring for his leg and supporting it whilst he's doing so much walking.
Glad to hear your husband's doing well and tell him to just wear them and not worry :)

I had to wear compression stockings awhile ago and also wound up having surgeries twice on both legs for the veins. I was self conscious at first too when I was wearing them. Then I decided it didn't matter what other people thought. I was going to be comfortable. If others thought they looked funny it wouldn't matter since you're probably never going to see them again. But honestly, I don't ever remember getting a comment on them from anyone.
So go and have fun and don't worry about the compression stockings. Where them with shorts and or light-weight pants and have fun.

Not at all! I think if I stood next to your DH that *I'd* get looked at, not him. I am covered head to toe due to religious reasons ;) I can't tell you how many times random people would ask me if I was hot in my outfit and how could I stand it? lol

I don't think I'd notice your DH's socks.

This thread has made me want to get my own athletic compression socks for our upcoming trip. Anything to help ease my tired legs and feet after a long day of touring!

Check out these fun athletic socks...

Tell him to take a walk and look around the water parks. I promise he will no longer be self concious about compression stockings. :thumbsup2

No clue what everyone else has said, nor will I go through it all, BUT...

tell him not to worry about it. If others are worried about him, they're not worried about their vacation. No one will be worried about his fashion unless he pairs the compression socks with a ratty tee, suspenders, a beanie, and sandals (but ONLY if the socks are black...).

WDW accepts EVERYONE regardless of color, gender, or ability.

Tell him to wear those socks with pride and to have a great time!

Dear Hoosier-:goodvibes

Tell your DH that some of us have noticible medical conditions, some of us do not. Sometimes you can see an obvious sign that we need either a brace, a crutch, stockings or have significant injuries that deem us different. We made need oxygen, have terrible scars, or have a life threatening condition.

My point is, tell your DH that the rest of us decent folk wont notice or say anything. The rude , crass and idiotness you may or may not at all encounter will only be for a brief moment, and some of us have been thru it too.

Go to the happiest place, and enjoy, and hide the trousers if neccessary!
Have a great trip!

Love,
your Dis Friends

Well I would like to give you and your husband some first hand experience information.
I am a male and have been diagnosed with Chronic Venous Insufficiency and wear 20-30 mmg compression pantyhose everyday. They are (Ames Walker Style #33 Beige)very thin compare to most compression hosiery, so they are much cooler. I wear with shorts everyday. I normally wear with shorts just above the knee, long sleve tee shirts, running shoes with socks. My legs are almost hairless becuase of the poor circulation, the rest of the hair I just shave, it keeps the hose in place.
Once I started wearing with shorts in public I was very nervous but I thought, why be nervous? I was given a prescription for these.
I would recomend the waist high/pantyhose from Amse Walker the are very economical at $19.00, and when wearin the pantyhose you get a continuous color up the leg so they are hardly noticeable. So please wear with confidence and nobody will care or say anything. Just be comfortable!
